I have been a Tigers supporter since I was a kid in the 70's, chose to barrack for them due to my dad playing for the Lake Cargelligo Tigers who wore the glorious yellow sash in the middle of NSW. It was a rugby League area and actually really tough to find out what was happening in the VFL. I remember sitting up late on a saturday night to watch The Winners to get my fill of the Tigers. I remember watching Kevvie Bartlett go sick in the 1980 Grand Final ( could you imagine a player playing today with a comb over), I remember Maurice Rioli (RIP) nearly stealing us the 1982 Grand Final( I think every Tiger Fan has a right to kick Helen D'Amico in the ass at least once).
The rest of the 80's is a blur, what happened at the club is anyones guess. I ended up supporting the Tigers during the Home and Away, but had to follow another team during the finals, in 93 i cheered the baby bombers on to a grand final victory(i even bought a t-shirt to wear grand final day,a thought which sickens me today).
And then a long came Richo, and we had a reason to cheer….(injuries)
95…. a great year, but the bloody SCG and Richo's knee. I was actually in the USA driving headers when the cats smashed us in the prelim. And I still swear today that if we had the Blues in the prelim , well we just matched up better against them . then what happens we get rid of Northey… WTF???
More pain follows for Tigers…but then i came home from 18 months in the UK to the 01 season, and Richo gets his chance to play a preliminary finals.I travelled the 6 hours to melbourne to watch us smash essendon in round 22, I travelled the 6 hours again the following week to see the opposite ,And how i regret not travelling the 6 hours the next week to watch our last finals victory against the Blues. We really did overachieve that year(which is easy to see in hindsight) and the damage that was done to the club by top up and depth drafting we are still paying for. Our great club was reactive rather than Proactive.
2005 , we get off to a flyer, I was at the G when Browny took Clement apart in the last quarter, and I was at Colonial Stadium in when Browny's leg Broke, Bye bye season
How have we ended up in a situation where do not have one single ruckman at the club? ( i believe the single most important player in any club, you have to have a quality big man to give you a contest all over the ground)
Finally we have addressed that ( thank god for Ivan) but we all knew we were in trouble if he went down.
We were missing big bodied players all over the ground to give us contests all along our spine, it seems to be being addressed now Rance Grittiths etc but these players do take time to develop.
Today I am really hurting, we are the only team to not have beaten the Suns, even the giants have beaten the Suns.
Why was our decision making so slow, Matt Dea , Bacher Houli? Angus Graham how are you still on the list?
I have based a holiday in 2 weeks on watching Richmond's charge to the finals , The Blues in Melbourne and the Lions at the Gabba, I am an Interstate Member travelling from Darwin, please those lucky enough to wear the Tigers colours , please step up Its more than time for our fortunes to change.
I am sick of gloating from Essendon supporters , I hate those front-running Blues. I hate those smirks and patronising comments from opposition supporters.
I love The Richmond Football Club and Today it hurts so bad!
