Autopsy "I remember when"

[Google]... Fairly sure it was round 22 1981 I almost attended. Due to work committments and traffic hell on Wellington Rd., I arrived late to Arctic Park (around 40 mins pre-game). Finally got waved through to a carpark down near the Monash. With 15 minutes to the bounce we bolted toward the outer wing gate, reaching the road prior to the hill before grim-faced Cats and Bombers fans walking back towards us screamed out, "Don't bother fellas,.. they've locked the gates!"

Only game I have ever been locked out of (it had to be THAT one!), and being a member, nothing sucks more.

Driving out of the carpark, the sky looked ready to drop housebricks again. So we pulled into the first Maca's just as hail and lightning struck. Took the radio in with us and listened up to 3/4 time over a couple of coffees. The place was packed with disgruntled, rain soaked footy supporters.

Geelong: 7:13:55
Pre-Injectors: 6:11:47

Attendance: 75,221

Same game?

Not sure but I dont think so. That 81 game..was that Sheedy's first season? Think Ess had won 15 on the trot till we beat them? Pretty sure went with a friend to that games with his family. Mother was Ess supporter and a quiet trip home.:D

Anyway Im not sure , but I remember sitting in the forward pocket near the GS opposite end to the grainy sepia Scoreboard. ( we never usually sat there) so I assume it was ticketed and a final.. Perhaps it wasn't even Ess , and i cant be bothered going thru all the games we played the ice dome.

I remember as a Kid (not so long ago the 80's o_O ) TV stations use to close for the night at midnight, stations like 7 and 9 use to have city back drops on screen and play weird classical music.

Lot more entertaining then some of the crap on TV these days :)

Channel 9 was pretty much 24 hours a day from the late 70s onwards - you had the late movie at Midnight, the late, late movie, then the late, late, late movie or Ironside/Gideon's Way/some ITV trip, etc. Hard to believe but the ABC would finish around 11pm, right through to the mid 80s, until Rage kicked in on weekends.

Who remembers
The Alfred Hitchcock Show?
"Good Eeeevening".
Apparently Hitch appeared somewhere in every single episode. That was my excuse to stay up and watch, just to find him. Parents were not in favour of me watching, yet years later it was fine for my younger sibs.

Hitch did appear in every episode, with intro and outro, and oversaw each script (directing a few dozen himself). Genius.

Anyway , the North game started like that. Tight as a fish's proverbial. Then the rain came, and did it come. By half time id say there was only half the crowd left and by the last in the low thousands. If I'm correct North failed to score the second half.
That was one of my all-time fav matches, there would have been only a thousand people on the outer wing after half time (the other side was still packed). As a kid it was one of those rare opportunities where you could sit anywhere along the two rows of planks that passed for seating along the boundary fence.

Not up with my Sheedy facts - not at all a fan ;)

I actually had to Google the Bomber's game as I couldn't recall the year. But the score seems about right, and now you mention it, I remember Essendon were on a roll to that point. Do you remember abyssmal weather on that day?

I was seated in the left pocket for the '81 prelim, 'Gary Sidebottom Day'. That scoreboard was virtually useless when the sun shone upon it.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents in the 80s was my greatest vice. Would love to watch some of those again.
Compelling family viewing! :D. Just recently watched Hitchcock 'The Movie'. Great insight into the trials Hitch faced when the studios wouldn't back his belief in Psycho.

The Twilight Zone is brilliant, the writing and acting was so much better then due to the fact there were no cgi or special effects!

The Twilight Zone "Radio Dramas" is a nationally syndicated radio series featuring adaptations of the classic television series The Twilight Zone, launched in October 2002. Many of the stories are based on Rod Serling's scripts from the original Twilight Zone series, and are slightly expanded and updated to reflect contemporary technology and trends (e.g., the mention of "cell phones" and "CD-ROMs" which, of course, weren't around when the television show aired in the 1960s). Taking Serling's role as narrator is Stacy Keach.

I remember going to the G the day before a one dayer for training back when the nets were outside the ground complex.
As a 7-8 year old kid getting autographs from Lillee, Marsh, Border, Walker, Pascoe, Walters.

To this day i'll never forget seeing Dougie Walters walk out the cages, pulling a pack of smokes out of his thigh pad and lighting on up.

It was the best thing ever. Most horrible habit in the world and I do not condone anything to do with it but for split second there, Dug Walters made it cool .

Then Lillee off the LONG run, Thomo from the other end, Baccus out there talking shit….

AWESOME..

Not to mention the Windies giving it all back with interest….
Marshall, Dujon, Garner, Viv, Lloyd, Dessie, GG… Wow that was a team….

Go Catters
I remember Dennis Lillee bowling to Viv Richards at the G, the best bowler in the world against the best batsman, half an hour before stumps, Australia was in trouble and Lillee was on fire. Three consecutive bouncers and then one under the bat and off stump was knocked out of the ground. The umpire said something to Lillee after the third bouncer, probably "anymore and I'll no-ball you Dennis", those were the days when intimidation was just that. It was a privilege to watch that game, we won and Lillee got a bag of wickets. A few years later I saw Viv score a double hundred at the G, Lillee had retired. Viv, the master blaster was a joy to watch.

And who can ever forget the Lillee.... Lillee..... Lillee chant as he started his run up near the bay 13 fence. The chant became an absolute roar by the time he reached the wicket... Sent tingles up my spine

That's a very good one.

Some random memories to think of now (and to show my age)....

1. My first game was during WORLD SERIES CRICKET at Waverley. Can't remember much (I was 5), but I do remember getting Joel Garner's autograph before play started. We went to another game which was a day / nighter, and I can't recall anything except for the amazing "Lill-ee Lill-ee" chant from the crowd, and Rod Marsh taking an amazing catch to dismiss Lawrence Rowe.

2. I was at the underarm game against New Zealand in February 1981. Remember that vividly. The big question is still why Greg Chappell thought that guy was even capable of hitting a six, but never mind.

3. I saw Doug Walters make his final test century (I think) against New Zealand in that same summer, bringing up the ton with a cover drive off Jeremy Coney. He put on 60-odd for the last wicket with the Victorian legspinner and definitely-not-batsman Jim Higgs which was memorable too. This guy made Glenn McGrath look like Bradman.

4. I remember a one-dayer between Australian and England in 1982/83, and Greg Chappell hitting 5 successive fours off Ian Botham.

From the formative years they're the major cricketing memories anyway.

Exactly right. They had won 15 straight before that game. 1981 was the year where it had the most mindboggling permutations of finals places, all hinging on the final round. Basically anyone could finish anywhere out of the top 7-8 sides. Richmond narrowly missed out on the finals - but won 13 games! Of course, after that they sacked Tony Jewell and have been paying for it ever since.

Don't forget the G. Maynard G. Krebs. :D

Also don't forget Dobies' stalker - Zelda Gilmour
Munsters , Addams family , Get Smart and F Troop were also compulsory viewing.
Embarassing how many of those old TV themes can be sung word for word , even now - my kids think I'm some kind of freak.

Thunderbirds used to be on just before Hey Hey It's Saturday when I was around 19. Used to gather at a mates place after a night out , recount the night with 6 or so mates , then settle in to watch them both......those were the days:thumbsu:

At least my memory is correct that I Nankervis kicked a goal!
All my childhood memories would have come into doubt if he didn't :D
Remember the North game really well. Afterwards Barassi said on TV that Geelong was a "really, really good team". That was about as much praise as I'd ever heard Barassi heap on Geelong.

And Ian Nankervis' goal was a gem. He'd worked his way up the sodden field in driving rain, weaved his way through traffic and slotted a "captain's" goal. After that win Cats' supporters dared to dream of a premiership......

Not footy related but weird TV shows form the dim dark past do seem engrained.

Anyone remember Dobie Gillis or Its about Time. Yank shows of course. The Aus ones I remember all seem to be cop shows. Homicide, Division4 etc.
Ahhhh!! More memories. We need a "Nostalgia" sub board on the Geelong board, I think.

I look back and don't know how I fitted in playing outdoors after school and still watching maximum TV. My earliest memory is The Three Stooges (always preferred Curly to Shemp). Then there was Leave it to Beaver; Denis the Menace ("Hello Mr Wilson!"); Green Acres; The Paddy Duke Show; and of the Australian shows not already mentioned - most of which featured the same core group of support 'actors' - Matlock Police; Hunter; Skippy ("What's that, Skip?". Looking back, it was just plain stupid that everyone was able to communicate with a kangaroo). Could go on but wont.

Patty Duke, iirc.
What about Get Smart, the Adams Family- I still know the words to the intro song verbatim.
I too was a Curly fan as mentioned above- we must be of similar vintage.
What about the Abbott & Costello shows, the Marx Bros, Laurel & Hardy, Red Skelton, I'm really dredging up the archives there, but these shows are just not made any more these days.
Is it reassuring we can all remember this stuff, yet I can hardly remember the names of clients I saw this morning??
