Don't know if this is the right place but I'm fairly new to the sport and really enjoy it. Just don't quite understand the icing rule can someone please explain it?

A is not icing.

B is icing, because he is behind the centre red line.

Thanks guys. So bit confused as sometimes I have seen the puck hit the length of the icr and its not called.

Two reasons it might not be icing would be the team was shorthanded and they can just smash it out of their defensive zone as much as they want or a player from the attacking team was the first to get to the puck after it goes over the goal line. They have a passive icing rule now that if a player from the defensive team reaches the faceoff circles in the corners first, then it is automatically icing. This was to help stop players being smashed into the boards on an icing by an overzealous forechecker from the other team.

Thanks much appreciated. What do you mean by shorthanded?

Thanks guys for explaining.

Find NHL to be the most watchable of the US sports as its less stop start. I don't have a team yet but would love to see a Canadaian team lift the stanley cup although doesn't look likely this year unless Montreal can get on a role.

When you have fewer players on the ice than the opposition
I think we should explain that you have fewer players on the ice because one of your players is in the penalty box for a penalty of some kind. The team that has the penalty is said to be ShortHanded and the other team is on the Power Play.

Yeah, when not short handed the defender has to get past the faceoff dots in the zone first for it to be called icing. The goalie also has to stay in his crease. Puck needs to come off the offensive team last from behind the centre line and the defensive team can't have just left a puck they could have played to try to get an icing.

What's the penalty for an icing how does it work when a team/player does that ?
The penalty for Icing is having the ensuing faceoff in your defensive zone. Also, the offending team are not allowed to change players as normal. This is to stop a line of players that have been on the ice for a long time and are tired, from dumping the puck down the other end of the ice so they can get a change.

Thanks been watching a bit of hockey on foxtel lately and wondered about that . Also pity they don't show more of the nhl love watching the shootouts .

Hybrid icing is confusing still

It just means if the defending team is the first to get the top of the circle in the offensive zone they immediately blow it as icing rather than waiting for them to touch the puck.

Stops them getting crunched from behind by over aggressive fore checkers.

too many gruesome injuries

The main thing about icing that is subjective and may be confusing to a viewer is when icing is waved off because:

"The linesman believes a player on the opposing team (other than the goaltender) could have played the puck before it crossed the goal line."

Now for the goalie if he makes any move at all to play the puck, even if he doesn't get it, icing should be waved off. This is why sometimes you see an icing puck go only a couple of inches from the goal but the goalie remains stationary to make sure icing still gets called.
