Ideas for new stats thread

I’m not a big fan of voting or points systems; firstly because I’d generally rather assess the spread myself and secondly because in terms of discussion, it kind of defeats the purpose of using them to debate aspects of a players performance.

Metres Gained stats from the Hun publication would be good. If someone could figure out effective meters gained would be better – as in total metres gained for each disposal that directly results in retained possession (probably asking a bit too much I know).

Goal differentials. Ie goals from - marks/CM/leads/handball receives, running goals (1 or more bounces maybe), sharking the pack; tight angles (maybe a figure to denote degrees), pressure goals (2 or more opponents within 3m in play? Score related?); from outside 50; goals from the midfield.

Some greater indication of role played in the match – eg midfield + run-with role; midfield + head-to-head; midfield + hard tagged/rotating tagged; HB + hard tagged; HB defensive role; HF defensive role. I appreciate this could be difficult in the modern game, but some indication would be better than none.

Contests Competed in for defenders (along with the already mentioned goals conceded). The EF Henderson vs Hurley 1Q is a great example; with some saying Hurley pantsed Hendo, when the latter outpointed him in something like 5 out of 8 contests. It could be a good stat for keeping track of Yarran’s defensive performances too, which aren’t all that bad.

Outstanding Acts – something that would have to be defined by consensus. Everyone loves a bit of x-factor, how about we try and find a way to record it.

Take-ons - I think of Dustin Martin and his don’t argues, Judd breaking through tackles, or Yarran as he simply runs around players, and figure this worthy of noting down somehow.

Tit-Pass - I know we have DE% and retained possession, but I'd love to have stats showing to kicks down the throats of teammates, which neither of the former have to be to register positive.

The last few starting to get a little subjective, so I'll stop here.

Would it be worth asking folks to put their hand up each week to watch a particular player?

I know after a game, I find it hard to remember each individual's performance, but certain things done by particular players will stand out. I reckon if I was watching specifically just one player I could remember a whole lot more about them came the end of the game. And if we are taking specific stats (disregarding stats that are collected elsewhere) again, this would be easier with 1 player rather than trying to manage it for the whole team.

If multiple folks put their hand up for one player, so much the better, they can compare notes afterward.

The sort of stats that I think would be worth tracking this way would be things like:

time vs each opponent through a game (this would be cool if there was a big footy wide ranking system because a player's merit could be judged in terms of time vs better opponents).

running bounces that break open play and become constructive rather than confusing teammates and petering into nothing (running bounces on their own tell you nothing)

1 on 2's where a player wins or breaks even in the contest, conversely 2 on 1's where 2 players are beaten by their single opponent

etc etc.

Blues and Bullants Player Watch in our sub forums is/was supposed to be just that with posters asked to select a player to 'buddy' at the start of the season

If someone who has been around for a couple of years has not noticed this - you can see why I posted that any meaningful new rating thread/s have to be on the main board
