No point explaining it, been done already.

Firefox by miles. Can't even remember the last time i used the POS that is IE on my machine

can't remember the last time i used IE actually. in fact, i remember at one stage that i researched how to block it from opening all together, which i eventually did. it was great.

Don`t make the mistake of thinking Firefox is safe simply because the people on this site say it is. It has had some whopper security issues in its history. You only need to look at the Mozilla security site to see some very critical security flaws in very recent versions - including code execution and browser history stealing.

The plugins features are cool but IE has them as well. They are written by 3rd party authors and may not be well thought out or particulary secure.

The activeX argument is bollocks as it`s blocked by the browser unless you authorise it. Things like OWA don`t render at all well in Firefox (which probably won`t be an issue for you)

If you want absolute safety lads then get rid of Windows, install a LInux distro and you're set. Also, hint: Ubuntu comes with Firefox by default.

The only downside to Linux is the fact you can't really run all of your favorite WIndows games. Unless you choose a distro like Wine or Cedega, but even then there's going to be a lot of issues.

Or any real business orientated software. And again - it`s only as secure as the software authors make it.

Exploits are found in linux based apps routinely.

Linux is used in business all the time, man. LInux is A LOT safer than Windows because you have to explicitly allow the damage to be done. Unlike in Windows malicious software and such can't run without your consent. It's the way the OS is built.

I`ve been selling Linux based file and mail servers for the past six years - it`s a core part of my business. I have a very good understanding of the operating system.

Linux will not run any meaningful business orientated apps. Sure - it will handle things like openoffice, firefox, a few good mail apps on the desktop and makes a fine Web/Mail/file serving platform for the backend but it cannot compete with Windows once you go off the beaten path.

Take MYOB for example - hugely popular Accounting system that has no chance in a linux environment. And the list goes on.

It`s a myth to think that malicious software doesn`t affect Linux - It does exist. Rootkits are the choice for OS`s like Unix, Sun and linux (as well as BSD I guess). Once they gain root access - your screwed. I have had my Server compromised by a sustained SSH attack that filled my logs with password attempts.

Windows is not a true Multi user os yet - but it will get there.

I know malicious software exists, obviously. But for the average user the chances of being the victim of an attack are virtually zero. I'm not necessarily talking about using Linux in a buisness enviroment. But Linux "is" commonly used in certain business environments. It's gaining popularity and most distros being totally free, it's a damn good OS.

Windows is just to clunky and unstable for my liking. Like most people I've been using Windows as well for a very long time. In the end, if you're anal about security then stay away from Windows. That was my original point.

Firefox. Everyone else has already articulated the reasons why. Faster, better at blocking pop-ups, better at blocking viruses, cool add-ons (adblock plus!! best add-on ever) etc. I just felt like coming in here to say IE sucks. I had to use it the other day, I nearly broke my computer in frustration.

Also seconding the Opera recommendation. It's a bit like Firefox light to me. Cleaner and maybe a little faster, but gotta play around with it a bit more to get the settings just right. So I've stuck with Firefox.

True enough, but there are also plenty of alternatives out there to combat such attacks, for example running BFD along with APF will stop the effectiveness of sustained SSH attacks. These sort of defences aren't readily available on Windows due to its propietary nature.

It was my own silly fault in this case. Tunneling Remote Desktop over SSH and was too lazy to set up some method of key exchange. I thought my password was pretty good as well. :)

With regards to alternate OS`s - I would definetly encourage people to give linux a bash - Ubuntu probably - however the enthusiam should be tempered with the reality that it`s not for everyone. I find the desktop to be totally unproductive.

I use IE for viewing CTV stuff off the Collingwood website.

FF is better all-round and I don't seem to be getting as much spyware or BS from sites than when I used IE but I think there is a big myth that Firefox is super safe when it is still very breachable. Also I don't get the ultimate devotion some people have to a browser.

Cue the Mac OSX fanboys.... wait, that's me! :thumbsu:

I know from a programming point of view, Firefox doesn't support some languages like VB Script. Windows will always be exploitable though. I have to admit though, Internet Explorer 7 is bloody nice. It fixes up sooo many programming bugs from version 6. It really is quality. Firefox can be a bit of an eyesore at times. Opera is the best of both worlds, and maybe Safari more so (my default browser). Although Safari doesn't support every functionality in CSS. It also tends to lack complete support on the Internet.

Whatever browser you go with, can you please just get rid of Internet Explorer 6. It would make my life a lot easier.
