This question is for anyone from south Australia or Western Australia who follow there state competions,
If a Victorian team joined either of the leagues would you be impressed, tell me what you think of that concept,

Would it piss you off or would you accept it,
and also what would you think if the league moved finals games or grand finals to another state????

Maybe now you can see why people in Victoria are so pissed off with the AFL,
I don't know what the leagues are like in south Australia or Western Australia but Im sure if the same thing happend to there leagues like it has done to the old VFL then they would be pissed off,

There should be a national league, But why should it be at the expense of Victoria's football
I believe that The VFL should go back to its oringal state, then the top 4 sides from each state league around Australia should play in the National League,

Well, being how it is now I would be pissed but when it happened maybe not so much. If you asked the teams in the AFL if they wanted it back like the old AFL I reckon they would say WE WANT TO BE IN THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE, every single victorian team would. You still have your VFL, just different teams, plus now a HUGE representation in the National League. The actual Grand Final won't leave Victoria in the forseable(sp) future so there's nothing to complain about. At the moment the WAFL is in need of something to inspire it, Since the VFL became the AFL it has gone down hill, but the SANFL is still going strong.

id have to agree with that!

People from other states dont understand why we whinge all the time thats because they dont take a good look at why we are whinging!!

and as for the vfl still being there with different sides
the only reason it is still there is because the vfa changed their name to the vfl

For some *** reason, it was fine with just a few sides from outside vic, but it gets beyond a joke when the afl plans to get rid of more victorian teams so that more teams from other states can join the competition

The reason why the VFL accepted West Coast and Brisbane and don't forget Sydney (south Melbourne folded they didn't relocate, the same as Fitzroy did in 1996)

It basically came down to money and a bunch of arseholes in control of the VFL at the time who wanted a National league like Ross Oakley and Jack Hamilton and other people who only had there own best interests at heart,

The victorian supporters have been shi t on for years by the league, and by there clubs,
and now by the players,
The game should not be a full time sport, it should go back to how it used to be, players work during the week, and play on the weekends, this fulltime crap has ruined the game
anyway thats what I think

Why can't you Victorians just get over it. Your money hungry teams dug their own graves so just live with it.

Would this have anything to do with the first final between two non-victorian teams?

Yep I'm quite happy for the leagues to go back to their original states and for the top clubs in each state to battle it out against other states, but uh, I'll take all the West Aussies back for our competition thanks

gotta say I agree with the general "interstate" thrust on this thread.

There was an option of starting a new competition with clubs representing the various states or something similar. The VFL chose not to take this option, instead chose to base the national comp on an expanded VFL. Well....so be it....the VFL won....now they can live with the consequences. The way things were going in the VFL it was arguable if all of the clubs would have survived this long anyway.

No use complaining if you did nothing about it at the time. If you want to you can sack Jackson....become a member, and vote in a president who will agree to not extend his contract. Whilst you don't do this you cannot complain.

you lot sicken me. Its not the VFL anymore idiots...GET OVER IT. If you dont like the AFL, go support coburg. Its the AFL, NATIONAL league, not a STATE league anymore...get over it, and move on with life.

How bought the powers that be start a new league with only collingwood, calrton, richmond, essendon, port, adelaide, west coast, brisbane, sydney, NT, and Canberra. Would you complain then??
Just be lucky that everything in football still seems to happen in victoria...i doubt the grand final will move from the MCG in my life time, so get over it and wake up

Don't ignore the historical facts. Victoria has always been the stronghold of footy. Why didn't the national league eminate from Adelaide, or Perth? Because footballing culture, passion and support had always been the strongest in Victoria. If everything still supposedly happens in Victoria, then it is for a reason.

The AFL has been grafted out of a VICTORIAN competition which was 90 years old. That is FACT. There is no disputing this. Of course there are going to be a lot of people who yearn for what they had - and get pissed off as the Johnny-Come-Latelies thump their chests and tell us to get over it!

Only time will rectify this - because anyone who held the VFL as close to their hearts will do so to the grave. It is niaive to thing otherwise. You don't have to like Victoria, or you can say that we dug our own hole - but please recognize sociological phenomena. Sport is tribal, and cultural change is hard to accept - especially when most people dont want it!

Crumbs!

Victorian teams joining the WAFL would hate it, because they would have to travel interstate all the time because there are 9 teams here and 1 team there (If we're just talking about 1 team joining the competition).

Woof Bicky

you miss the point....

no-one is saynig that the AFL did not evolve out of the VFL, nor that that was the most logical place.

There was an alternative of course which was to form a separate comp with clubs from each state leauge (maybe promotion / relegation) etc. This was not good enough for the VFL so they did it their way...fair enough they had the clout to do so...but you can't then complain at the "loss" of the VFL. You could have kept the VFL as it was but the VFL chose not to.

That is what we (at least I) mean by "get over it"

I put the blame on VFL club presidents, league officals and major corperate sponsers,
and don't forget Channel 7
The large majority of Victorian football supporters never wanted the VFL to become the AFL, but did the clubs and league officals really give a shit what the general public wants no, Have they ever listened and given the public what they want no, they have treated the general public like shit, and they contintue to do so, and why because too many people accept what the AFL do,
Maybe just Maybe if people actually refused to go and watch the footy they might listen and give the people something back,
when Sydney was millions in debt in the early 90's the AFL helped them out, but did they do the same for Fitzroy No,
Its about time the people of Victoria told the AFL where to go,
Too many people have been scared by clubs saying they will fold if you don't by a membership, or your not a real supporter if your not a member, and yet did any of the Victorian clubs apart from Hawthorn help keep Waverley Park open for AFL matches No they didn't because all they want is your money they don't give a shit about your support just as long as they have there cash there happy,
The only way to save Football in Victoria is to Boycott the AFL, Send the AFL then start a new Victorian League,
And use Waverley Park as the Home of Football they place where it was suppose to be,
**** THE MCG,
What would the AFL do then hey
they would be stuffed,

when was the last time a president got the boot by members because they did not like the way the club or the AFL was being run ?

Apathy.

Bunch of wingers

You are right Barry...

The reason the VFL ceased to exist in its own right and became the AFL is due to the massive corporate clout of Melbourne based business that had national interests.include ch 7 in that...
It had little if nothing to do with all the VFL fans and supporters trudging to games at various Melbourne suburban grounds, these people didntOWN these teams or league....

It was and is controlled by senior AFL self serving officials, Channel 7, and Melbourne based corporations that sponsored these Melbourne clubs...The need was to find a national outlet and television rights for these vehicles...

It wasnt the fans as they ..have no clout..it was Dons smallgoods, Fosters, Four n twenty pies, etc etc etc wanting avenues into Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane Perth. etc

We never or little heard of these products, no real market share at all...they owned the VFL along with the before mentioned...They did not want their investments..[multi million dollar] in melbourne based football clubs to be squandered or diluted by having to sponsor clubs in those other cities...thereby being less cost effective...and not allowing VFL clubs open slather on raiding SANFL WAFL clubs.

The AFL was forced upon us by the corporate sector....and in doing so perpetuating a form of cultural and football genocide on WA and SA...with all of a sudden Victorians telling us.." Hey er um we are the National teams now, which means we must be best because we are national" and all the prevailing BULLSHIT about VFL history and AFL history.

Pigs arse as Elliot puts it...MONEY bought Nationalisation of the VFL...Not the VFL, Corporations and self serving football types at the head of the VFL bought nationalisation...at the expense of History , tradition and respect of football outside of Victoria...
