... as a direct result of the AFL giving the Lions poorer FA compensation than they anticipated for Leuenberger, increasing their need for points for Academy prospects...

... would this be the first time in the AFL's history in which rule changes/external influences have conspired to assist Collingwood?

I'm thinking of the father-son bidding system coming in a year too late for us to get Selwood in 2006, the AFL giving Melbourne pick #3 last year for bloody Frawley as FA compo so they wouldn't have to give them a priority pick, the option of going into the National Draft not being an option for Nick Stevens... you get the idea.

Shoot the breeze and release some trade week frustration!

I think he is referring to the fact that to. Hawkins went father-son to Geelong that year and had the bidding system been in place they likely would have had to pay pick 7 for him leaving Selwood for us at 8

Ben reid hasnt been a bad choice at #8 though, he helped deliver a flag and hopefully he is there for our next one, selwood is a flog anyway

Speaking of Reid, his father (Bruce) played 86 games for Footscray and Ben (and brother Sam) would presumably have ended up at the Bulldogs until father-son qualification was changed from 50 to 100 games a few years back. So you could say that change benefited us.

I think we had 8 & 10 that year and picked up Reid with 8 and brown with 10. Would have been even nicer to have gotten Selwood and Reid but thems the breaks

Nothing the AFL has ever done has ever assisted Collingwood, so the "appearance" that they may assist Collingwood in this particular circumstance can only be a cover for some other despicable, low down, underhanded, dastardly act they are about to pull.
Like players traded in have to play at least 3 years in the VFL before they are eligible to play AFL, but only if that club is financially solid, has a top five membership total and wears vertical stripes comprised of less than three colors.

Ah, that new rule where a team can ignore a player's wishes and send them anywhere... I'd heard clubs were pushing for that. When did it come in?

sliding doors with j selwood. collingwood always wanted key position players in that draft, st kilda however was next in line for a midfielder. swap armitage with selwood, 09 & 10 might look very different.

Would have taken Selwood and Reid. Hine has said as much. Who knows how things might have gone without Brown playing on Riewoldt in 2010 though.

- changed the ruck rules that disadvantaged Steve McKee more than any other ruck

- introduced the sub rule the year we won a grand final with a game plan built on heavy rotations

- introduced rules on forwards out-muscling defenders when we had the strongest and number one contested mark in the game

- introduced future picks trading the year after we would have benefited from it with the Beams trade (ok this was a coincidence and happy with how it turned out)

You forgot the "Micky Gayfer" rule and the "Jimmy Clement" hands in the back rule too.;)
Both men were umpired out of the game!
