... as a direct result of the AFL giving the Lions poorer FA compensation than they anticipated for Leuenberger, increasing their need for points for Academy prospects...

... would this be the first time in the AFL's history in which rule changes/external influences have conspired to assist Collingwood?

I'm thinking of the father-son bidding system coming in a year too late for us to get Selwood in 2006, the AFL giving Melbourne pick #3 last year for bloody Frawley as FA compo so they wouldn't have to give them a priority pick, the option of going into the National Draft not being an option for Nick Stevens... you get the idea.

Shoot the breeze and release some trade week frustration!
Look I come in peace... just want to have a little discussion.

I think that idea had been floated on the Lions board as well. It kinda makes out for a great conspiracy doesn't it? While the Berger compo wasn't what the club was expecting it still falls within the AFL rules that they updated for this season. Berger was only offered 350K a year which would mean we were given the end of second round compo pick which was pick 39. If he was offered 400k+ a year and we still got end of second round compo then yes it probably would have been set up like that to force us to trade Aish to get required points for academy boys.

Regardless of the formula being fairly straightforward, all the noises from Greg Swann and co. were that they were completely blindsided and considered the outcome to be that derived from a chook raffle.

Yeah, I think we were expecting Berger to go on a larger contract though. Does seem strange that WCE and BL both publicly slammed the new Compo formula even though it is more clear cut than before. The model is now publicly available (so no scheming behind closed doors from the AFL) and clubs shouldn't feel blindsided by what compo they could get.

The first draft was ridiculous. The whole thing was covered by a disclaimer that allowed the AFL to ignore the whole system and conjur up a pick by reading snail trails at dawn on Demetriou's driveway.

Yeah agreed.
Its not like either player was really ever going to be worth a 1st rounder, and neither was even a fixed top 22 player this year. (both may have been if fully healthy all season, but its clear that both were overtaken in their position by others who stepped up).
The contracts offered really reflect the players value, and the compensation picks were clearly appropriate IMO. I guess the clubs public responses may have been expected - but both were being ridiculous.

What i will say is that I hate the whole concept of compo picks, and they are only needed/useful because there are still so many other things that need to be fixed in player movement.
A teams decision to match for a restricted free agent should have nothing to do with some artificial compensation you get for letting him go.
