Just like memberships here, but I'd argue memberships are more about loyalty than revenue for the person who purchases the membership. But loyalty is a 2-way street - and MU have been able to separate the concepts to enable better revenue generation, because loyalty costs money.

If this club and league is the model the AFL wants to follow, they can get stuffed. Bigger isn't better.

Man Utd is a World-wide brand, whereas Collingwood is a long-time-past Victorian power-house.....Man Utd has won around a dozen premier league trophies in its 22 year history, Collingwood a mere 2 trophies these past 57 years....Man Utd plays the World-game, Collingwood-Aussie Rules, which has trouble being popular in the Northern States, let alone the entire country.

You made some good points, however I don't think Collingwood is realistically aiming to be like Mancbester Utd, nor do I think the AFL wants to be like the EPL. I've always thought of the EPL as the opposite of the AFL. The EPL is more of an open shop, as any team can be promoted or relegated, but also more of a closed shop as only the few richest clubs have any chance to win anything. I accept that professional sport is a business, but I like the fact that most of our teams are not privately owned brands. In the United States, the trophy is often presented to the the owner of the team. *Shudder*

Not much between the clubs, Hawthorn has just been much better (x1000) at capitalising on opportunity
