If there was another great war

Somewhat pertinent, had an old customer at work today and he started talking to me about Vietnam.

My generation is so fortunate, I'd rather a large mortgage and competitive job market and not being called up for war as an 18th Birthday present. Yet here we are, having a breakdown because words can hurt.

We're pretty wimpy. These guys just got on with job in the face of horrible atrocities and left scarred for life. Here we are making hypotheticals about which tropical island to flee to.

Not really. You ever heard of the great depression? We are about to enter mark 2. Without the manuel jobs as a get out clause.

This generation is far from soft. I hope it doesn't get to a point where we all find out.

You mean that thing that happened 10 years either side of world war? It was the same generations who lived those.

Lol yep that's very true.

I think war is now far too documented for people on a grand scale to actually want to take part and get their heads blown off.
Take a look at all the patriotic loon Americans on social media. Plenty of them would be willing to die for some cause, same would go for plenty in this country.

You can tell a lot about a person by the bullshit they believe. As you can see here, many here are spreading american propaganda about the crimes against humanity committed when two bombs were tested on Japan. We've told these very people before how to research for themselves and how bleeding obvious the bullshit is and still they choose to carry on in a most offensive manner.

The Americans refused the Japanese surrender before the bombs and accepted pretty much the same deal the japs put up, after the two bombs. Japan we completely surrounded by the three biggest armies and navies, had no war industry or trained experienced men, were starving. no rational intelligent person could ever justify what went on.

Yeah and **** Korea and China.

Only thing the Americans did wrong with Japan is stop the executions at Tojo

It's called having a closed mind when you ignore fact and continue to sprout propaganda. What you're achieving in no way helps preventing further atrocities against women and children.

You're arguing against no one. No one is saying those who died in Nagasaki and Hiroshima didn't die horrific deaths, not just those who died at the time but those who died for years afterwards from the after effects.

Do you really think, however, that Japan would have surrendered meekly had the war taken the conventional route? I'm betting the fighting would have continued until at least early to mid 1947, maybe even until 1948. In that time, it's not unreasonable to suppose that a million Japanese might have been killed. That, like it or not, is far more than the number who died from the atom bombs.

No one is claiming it was a nice thing, and that's war ultimately; a bloody, horrible business.

Name one thing the Japs did that was worse than what is being done in our country. now when you try and come back with somehting, don't go deny shit to try and make your point, dont go all "the British colonized this place and the blacks should be grateful" on us will you?

What did the blacks here do to deserve being nuked at Maralinga?

You're also talking to the son of a soldier who smashed the shit out of women and children in Kenya in the fifties. so tell me how my father deserved this shit

Karma for Nanking.

See above.

Japan was trying to surrender; before the bombings the Allies rejected an almost identical treaty to one they accepted afterwards.

During his [Stimson's] recitation of the relevant facts, I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives. It was my belief that Japan was, at that very moment, seeking some way to surrender with a minimum loss of "face."

"The Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing ... I hated to see our country be the first to use such a weapon," Eisenhower said in 1963.

You're an utter loon.

The crap you just typed proves to me you know nothing of what happened at Nanking.

Now go away child.

Pre or post Federation?

If you're talking pre-federation in Tassie the colony under Arthur had purges of the local Aboriginal population whose violence was staggering (e.g. one teenager had his cheek cut off and was forced to chew and swallow it).

Post federation than I doubt anything truly approaches Nanking (or post-War Russian occupied Berlin, perhaps even the fire-bombing of Dresden).

This RSN film is a staggeringly good watch and well worth the time

And is just a short clip on that issue in particular:

Not enough people have seen that movie.

A friend of mine read the title of this thread out to me while I was in another room, and I instantly came running. Upon reading the thread title for myself I was disappointed to see that it was not titled "If there was another great whore", because now I have no outlet to talk about all the great whores I have known. Well, I call them escort girls, but don't we all, out of politeness?
