What would our back 6 look like if we had all three still playing.. which three would drop out of our current defense?.. or if not three, which two..?

haha.. i was looking back on what i wrote before i posted this.. and knew someone would say that! wasn't expecting it straight up though..

ok, ill rephrase it slightly.. if all those three mentioned were 28 years of age.. so playing good football..

i would have said

Johncock Rutten Hart
Smart Bock McLeod/Otten?

i didnt put bassett in cause i couldnt find room for h im on the last line of defense..

Johncock, Rutten, Hart
Smart, Bock, McLeod

Otten & Bassett would both still be first 22 by a stretch.

otten is still young and remember hes not a defender, hes not meant to be playing there, i'd prefer to see him in the midfield, if you remember his first couple of games, he played in the midfield and had easy chances(which he missed) for goals, so im sure he would be a damaging midfielder, seems to lack a bit of speed but makes up for it in class.

i know this is a hypothetical question but i still find it quite silly.

I never really rated bassett that high. sure he wore his heart on his sleeve and gave it his all every single time. but the man wasnt blessed with any great foot skills, or dashing pace, or big body. He hung in there and carved a career for himself well done but I rate Otten a much better player.

Nigel Smarts best footy was played on the half forward line. And Ben Hart, Absolute legend. He'd get a gig in my best crows back 6.

HB: Hart, Bock, Otten
B: Johncock, Rutten, Edwards

I assume you havn't watched much football. At his best, Bassett was superb. He not onyl beat his own man but helped his teamates beat their men as well.

Otten has been great but has a way to go to get equal with Bassett.

If you had those 3 to boot, Freo would've been scoreless. You guys are already a defense powerhouse, It's scary that you're thinking about adding previous big name defenders to it.

The hound was a great player and ultimate team man there is no doubt about that. Not to mention a champion dummy spitter in earlier years :D

As good as our back 6 is, all 3 of the mentioned players at their best (or close to it) would be walk up starts to the back 6.

B: Bassett - Rutten - Hart
HF: Johncock - Bock - Smart

McLeod and Otten woudl still keep their spot in the 22 but would be played further up the ground. Maybe McLeod in the forward line as a crumbing forward (something we still lack) and Otten on the wing.

Johncock Rutten Hart
Bassett Bock McLeod

Smart playing at CHF, Otten in the midfield rotation.
Smart started as a wingman for south adelaide, got thrust into the back pocket, half back, CHB and FB in the early years - anywhere in defense. he made some cameos in the forward line, for a quarter here and there as a shock tactic - but he never played CHF.

Smart played pretty much all over the ground, our original utility - and I'm fairly sure he spent a reasonable amount of time at CHF. Feel free to shift him to the HFF if you feel that's a better fit though..

My point was that we'd have a more than adequate defence without him there - and his flexibility would allow us to play him elsewhere on the ground.

Seem to remember Nigel Smart at CHF in the second half of the 98 grand final. "He gets a kick, he gets a kick"

He certainly played a bit at CHF when Robran was injured which was a lot.

I don't know how many of you remember the early years but after Klug went Smarty was moved to CHF.

It was during the time when we were craving for one. Remember the game against Footscray in 1993 when he and Modra became the best Full Forward CHF combination in the AFL.

Also remember the game in 1993 against Geelong when Modra only kicked one. Smarty that day kicked Five playing on Steven Hocking.

But after Cornes got Sacked and Matty Robran came back from from his second broken leg He went back to the back line.

He was very good in 93 and 94 up forward though.

Steve Hocking was a dwarf, he played no more CHB than you or me :D
And that was exactly why Smart had a field day that match.

I have the 1993 video highlights package and the commentators made that exact point in the first quarter saying that hocking was too short to be playing on Smart. Smarty went on to Kick Five with Mods only kicking one in that match

i can buy that. he sometimes went forward, sometimes. much like ricciuto sometimes spelled at FF, neither were CHF.

Nige was as big a factor in our last qtr comeback against the doggies in the 1997 prelim, as darren jarman. moved forward in the last qtr. i'm not saying he never had the odd dalliance.

that has nothing to do with whether he played chf - only that he played on steve hocking (which obviously I don't recall on a game by game basis, but I know how big hocking was - and he did not line up at chb).

steve hocking played as much chb as eddie hocking - which may actually be less than you and me :p
