Think Tank If you're going to make a Grand Final these days...

...you better not lose.

Let's take a look at recent history...

2016: Sydney Swans
Ran into a rampaging Dogs side and did well to only lose by 20 with prominent GF spectator Gary Rohan in the team. Started 2017 0-6 and put on a crazy run to finals (and kept Essendon's drought alive), then went into freefall. List is anonymous and vanilla, but not in a good way like 2005. Still blaming umpires, and still paying Buddy $1m a year for 2 more years. :$:$

2017: Adelaide Crows
Did the power stance and booked an extra seat on the plane, but forgot to play football. Sent all their players to racist torture camp in the off-season and slowly crumbled afterwards. Couldn't drop captain Tex, Pyke and Eddie quit, and even Josh Jenkins thought he was too good for them. Took 14 weeks to win a game in 2020 and lost Crouch. :$:$:$

2018: Collingwood
Coughed up a 5 goal lead in the GF before Sheed put the dagger in late. Decided the missing piece was Dayne Beams and paid him $3m over 4 years (and 2 1st rounders to Brisbane) to finger paint. Went to sleep in the 2019 prelim (helping Treloar's 'worse list' win a 2nd flag), let Stephenson bet on Pies matches, lost Sidebottom's pants, and played illegal 'tennis'.
Decided they'd paid Dayne like he was Van Gogh and needed to free up some cash. Sold Phillips for a pack of chips and one of Kennett's golliwogs, paid the Dogs to take Treloar then blamed his wife, and traded Stephenson to Norf where no one could accuse him of fixing a game for financial benefit. In the process seemingly obliterating all player morale and supporter hope. :$:$:$:$

2019: GWS GIANTS
Limped into the GF by the skin of their teeth and were embarrassed by 89 points. Missed the finals in 2020 and dropped their captain, then Jeremy Cameron, Corr, and Williams told them to GAGF. Trending downwards with Leon Cameron still signed for 2 more years. :$

2020: Geelong
Hawkins avoided his customary finals suspension by instead punching professional spectator Gary Rohan for rooting a trainer. Despite this they still choked in front of goal and blew a 22 point lead in the GF, signalling an unfulfilling end to the 'holy trinity' (and Danger won the Leon). Went all-in on a Dangerflag by prising Jeremy Cameron from the Giants, but paid big for it. Still in the window, but a large, unceremonious fall off the cliff looms if they don't win it all in the next 2 years, and Chris Scott is still the coach. :drunk:

I'd say that's a fairly compelling argument for not making GFs. Perhaps Dodoro and Essendon are onto something? :drunk:

Folks who assume Geelong will bounce back next year are in for a rude shock. Might not've been a good idea to sell the farm for the Elbows Cameron either.

Freo fell off a cliff soon after they made their first and only grand final as well

West Coast lost the GF in 1991 but bounced back to win ‘92-‘94.

Lost 2005 them came back to win ‘06.

Lost again in 2015 but returned in 2018 for the greatest premiership victory ever.

Hope this clears things up on why we thumb our noses at theories like this and rightly accept our standing as the biggest & best club in the land. 😎

Did win a minor premiership after that though. Really you have to go back to 2011 Collingwood (coaching changeover) and 2010 St Kilda (Kim Duthie) for a proper drop off.

Wrong. Those first 2 GF were obviously cancelled out by the rampant PED use at West Coast.

OP is valid

1982: Richmond
Finally came up against a team that wasn't Collingwood, spent the next 37 years in the wilderness, nearly folding and earning themselves the nickname Niinthmond for their repeated & successful efforts to break their supporters hearts (see: chook s**t). Have now won 3 of the last 4, finally elevating them above Melbourne who haven't won a flag since 1964

I'll have you know that we have managed to make and lose 3 grand finals in 4 years smartarse. Your opinion is invalid

Nuh aah, West Coast simply were/are/always will be just too good, especially for this cockamamie theory. 😎
Was at the 92 GF, Cats well clear in the second quarter only to fall in a heap... reminds me of a fairly recent Grand Final. 😎

Nah mate, they did not fall, we pushed them down and stomped over their carcass with relentless pressure, superior fitness & the eye of the tiger. 😎

Sigh! Falling implied you pushing them down... it must be so hard to do isolated from civilisation even without Covid lockdowns.

Nope, falling implies they tripped, now pipe down and let me reminisce about how West Coast again & again buck the trend by winning a GF right after losing one. 😎
