Yeah well I got the pink late notice today. I suppose I best get down to the docs office and tend to this bullshit. I still think it's ridiculous that even after showing them the scars on my knee that they pinged me. There needs to be a bit of common sense involved in these fines.

While i'm having a bitch why is it that they are no where to be found when there are 5 drunk teenagers rolling around making a ruckus* yet they always turn up to call into question the validity of old ladies senior cards.

He's unlucky.

I have literally hundreds of em, haven't seen a Sheriff in 15 years.

It's got to the point now where sometimes I let inspectors 'report' me even when I have a valid ticket, just so I can hang shit on them.

Saw them clamping cars at a shopping centre a few weeks ago. They check registered owners of the cars.

Also saw someone getting arrested on a warrant who had about $17,500 in costs and he was going to be remanded in custody unless money was paid/surety. I'd call them and make an arrangement...

Well one, I don't own or drive a car, so that doesn't effect me.

And two, I am more than happy for them to come and take me to court because I know their ****ing stupid fines won't stand up. I received legal advice on them when I copped my first one way back in 1990 and nothing has changed since.

Fairly sure that if you don't lodge an appeal against the fine prior to the due date or in a reasonably quick time after you lose your right to challenge the validity of it.

If you got pulled up by a cop and they asked to see your ID, that fine would be there. If you applied for a driver's licence, that fine would be there.

I have been a notorious fine ignorer for years.

I've had anything from speeding, parking and fare evasion fines going back to 1990's.

I had a Sherif go to my parents house (in country Vic) about 5 years ago chasing up fines.

My dad called me and I told the Sherif that I'd sort something out.

Never got around to it and heard nothing else.

I was in Mildura for work about 5 months ago and went through what I thought was a random breath test.

After the breatho, they told me to get out of the car as a license check had revealed that I had Sherif's warrants.

It was then that I saw the Booz bus was actually a mobile Sheriff bus.

Got out of the car and they wanted to clamp it on the spot (luckily was a rental and couldn't).

Sheriff's acted like real tough guys, brought up my file of shame and said that I want going anywhere until I paid ALL fines in total.

It was hilarious in some ways as I driving to an appointment at Dept of Corrections which is in the same building as the Sherif.

I was pleased to see that anything before 2003 had dropped off the data base!! But was left with $1200 outstanding.

Thank god it was during the fine amnesty and all court costs had been removed or else I would have been up for about $3000.

I then cried poor and they accepted that I pay $40 a fortnight until resolved.

I had $3150 worth of fines accumilated over almost 10years, alot of that was interest... When i finally went to sort it out half my fines were cancelled because i took too long to pay them, so i only had to pay $1750, which i payed in installments. In Perth if you dont pay your train fines (like me) and you have had your 3 warnings to pay you get you drivers licenced suspended and cant drive until you start paying the fines off (luckily i didnt have licence, i just wasnt allowed to go for my L's until i had started paying the fines). Also it gives you bad credit, so they told me. I have paid all my fines now, and always buy a train ticket haha

In Victoria fines are only valid for 5 years from the date of issue. You'll find the sheriff will chase you if you have a lot of revenue (thousands) that is due to be voided due to time lapse.
If you apply to have your fine review the 5 year period starts from the date when the application is formally rejected.

The sheriff's officers generally operate from midday-8pm so if you're not home for the greater majority of those hours you should be sweet.
The problems arise when you park your car at train stations, shopping centres etc and owe more than $500; you get introduced to wheelclamps.

If you are accosted by a sheriff's officer, they will attempt to get you to sign documents agreeing to pay the fine or go on a payment plan. The game is up if you reach this point as your fine won't become voided through time lapse.

You can opt to do community service (planting trees, cleaning graffiti) etc for $20 p/hr off your fine totals if you dont want to spend your hard earned.

The best strategy is to avoid breaking the law.

Being from Tasmania, what I generally do is buy a ticket from the train station for the missus and I once we get off the Skybus, but never validate them. Then, when the inspectors ask for tickets, we present them. They say why arent they validated? I look at them, puzzled, and say just got them at the station, and say we are from out of town. Works everytime, and you can travel on that ticket anyday and only have to validate it when they ask :thumbsu:

I highly recommend it if travelling to Melbourne from interstate
