...but I'm starting to get that way.

I've been to three Collingwood matches this season and watches the WC game on Foxtel. In each game the home side has had a dream run from the umps in the first quarter. After that there has been a fair go, and even some squaring up.

In the Richmond game (Tigers at home) I was ropeable. We would have lost anyway, but the poor umpiring added insult to injury.

I think the Umps cost West Coast the game-and we were the home side.

Carlton got an armchair ride in the first quarter: as with Richmond, it didn't alter the outcome, but it was a joke. Actually the umps squared up in that game. We got some doozies in the third quarter, it was embarrasing.

The Hawthorn game was the worst so far. In that first quarter, every 50/50 went our way, and the Hawks couldn't buy a free. I think the free kick stas were 9-3 at quarter time. It was surreal-a Hawk would get tackled a bit low and the ump called play on. A second later the same thing happened to a Pie: Peeep! Free kick for tripping! Fair dinkum it cost Hawthorn two, maybe three goals. Once again, the umps squared up after quarter time. It didn't cost them the game, but it made me feel sick.

I don't know whats going on-is it just a conicidence, am I mistaken, or are the umps really favouring the home side in the first quarter? I haven't seen much of the other matches, although I'm told Sydney and Essendon fared well from the umps this weekend. Has anyone else noticed this pattern?

Carlton had the better of the umpiring in the 1st quarter.

Port had the better from halfway through the 2nd quarter on.

So your theory isn't set in stone ;)

Are you sure your not a closet Hawk supporter! ;)

On subject though I tend to agree. Think it is more prevalent among interstate games (that is the Vic's get preference over visiting interstater's as the Vic's sides get biased away). I have always thought that crowd noise early can contribute to this. I.e more support, greater pressure etc. Just a theory though, other than gut feeling it is hard to prove.

personally I think umpires have to date been very consistant..........very consistant in being inconsistant in each game!

btw anyone know if umpire 'training' has been going on for how far 15m's is??

Sydney didn't fare that well in the free kicks, although they got the one that counted. I actually can't believe the AFL stats that say it was 17 -15 in Kangaroos favour, as leading up to Creswells now famous free kick the tally was 8 -2 Kangaroos favour for the quater.
