Images of local footy history

I have come across a massive batch of around 400+ photos which are all negatives from around 1981. They seem to feature Emerald very heavily so were probably taken by a club photographer. I have only converted about 50 at this stage as it takes a little while converting negative film to positive digital images via a scanner.

Here is an example:

Emerald v Kinglake (I think) U17's 1981 final at Warburton. Apart from those bloody concrete goalposts the top goals haven't changed much at all.

Definitely is Yea in the picture.

Kinglake were in the Panton Hill league until the end of the 1980 season (green jumper with yellow vee) and were in recess from 1981 until 1990, when it joined the YVMDFL wearing gold jumpers with a green vee.

There's no record of any football played in 1981 in Kinglake.

There were only Records for the finals in the late-80s. I am pretty sure that they were being produced in 1994 and am pretty certain that Tara Press (current printers of the Grapevine) were doing them even back then. In 1994, I picked up a couple of Records from the house of the then YVMDFL secretary for my collection and he even ran through the process of how they were produced with me - maybe he was hoping that I would get involved. (This was back in the days when the secretary used to do them - and people would have scoffed at the idea of having a full-time media staff member for a local footy league).
I think you are right with this as I have some Footy Records for the 1970s and 80s and they are all finals Records so it may be that was done in finals for a very long time.

I played a little bit between 1986 and 1991 and don't ever remember seeing Records there. Had a year off in 1992 so don't know if they had them that year but the only Record I have for that year is also a finals Record.

From 1993 they were doing the full season from at least that year as I have a full set or close to for every year since then. I'm missing mainly the finals Records from 1993 onwards as I only went to my club games in the H&A games and we didn't make many finals so I didn't go to those. I think Barry Stuart may have been responsible for doing them then and they have always been produced by Tara Press.

Here are some YVMDFL Finals Records between 1971 and 1991 and one from April 1993 which is the first H&A Record I have since the 1965 MDFA season. The 1993 cover has Monbulk v Powelltown at Warburton on the cover which was the 2nd Div GF played in 1991.

With no Football Record during the season, The Lilydale Post printed its own Footy Record in the centre pages of the newspaper in 1983 and 1984, edited by Pat Molloy.

The YVMDFL only maintains records of League B&F winners for all grades back to 1978. Prior to that it only records the senior B&F results

Maybe this was as a result of the complex Divisions run between 1974 and 1977 where senior and reserves teams were placed in the same divisions based on their overall strength... which did work well as it allowed some of the smaller clubs such as Powelltown, Marysville, Yarra Junction, South Belgrave and Silvan to be in a competition of relative strength. It may have also been due to lax record keeping in the mid 70s as administrations change each year.

The only result for 1974 that you will find on the League website is that John Haag of Emerald (who had previously also played with Monbulk and Woori I think) won the Division 1 B&F.

In the 1974 2nd Semi Final Footy Record they listed all the vote-getters in all the divisions, which looked as follows:
Wayne Morris (Warby) who finished 6th, went on to win the 1975, 1976 and 1978 awards and had also managed 5 games for South Melbourne in 1967
Leo Groenewegen (Gem ruckman) who polled 6 votes and played 5 games for North Melbourne in 1971 is still involved calling games on the radio

In the Under 17s there are a couple of names that stand out:
Bruce Painter (Belgrave 2 votes) only retired a few years ago after about 450 games
Mark Seamer (Monbulk 9 votes) is the current club President

The stand out name in 2nd Division is 16 year old Wayne Johnston of Wandin (equal 4th on 12 votes) who went to Prahran (1975-78) and then Carlton (1979-90)

Brent Zeisler of Belgrave kicked 21 goals against Yarra Junction in a Division 1 Senior game in 1973 and featured on the front of the local paper. Brent also played with Waverley (VFA) and Boronia.

In 2005 the YVMDFL incorporated netball into its structure.

Netball had been closely associated with football from the 1930s to 1960s as the netball (then known as basketball) and football fixtures often closely matched. When the MDFA merged with the YVFL in 1966 the two sports drifted apart as they would compete in different catchment areas.

Netball courts were very rough in those earlier times, often being gravel, sand or broken bitumen. It is unlikely those surfaces would be classed as fit to play on these days.

Here is a photo of the Bayswater Netball A Grade team (known then as Bayswater Girls Basketball Club) after they had just lost the Grand Final to Monbulk at FTG about 1962. Check out the number of cut knees.

Below is some action from the 1961 Mountain District Girls Basketball Association from the 1961 GF at King's Park FTG between Monbulk (captain Jan Moore catching the ball) against Belcoma. Jan Moore (later Simpson) played in at least 10 A Grade premierships for Monbulk between 1959 and 1982.

Upwey have won many premierships in the YVMDFL in the last 50 years.

In 1972 they won the B Grade (Reserves) Grand Final, defeating Belgrave 14.18.102 to 11.14.80. This was one premiership that they weren't allowed to keep however.

Wandin spent quite a few years in the Eastern FL in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1962 they lost the Grand Final against The Basin by the narrowest of margins.

In 1966 they reached the Grand Final again, only to lose by the same margin...this time to Olinda.

In 1965, the last year of the MDFA, the Free Press ran a series of team photos, some of which had colour added at the printing stage.
Here are the 7 MDFA sides of 1965: Olinda, Gembrook, Upwey-Tecoma, Belgrave, Emerald, Monbulk and Upper Ferntree Gully

Olinda Ferny Creek won the 1st of 3 flags in a row in 1965 in the old EDFL 3rd Division !

Absolutely correct, my mistake. I was just so used to seeing Olinda in the MDFA that I included them as well. Olinda had finished last in the MDFA in 1964 and joined the EDFL in 1965. It was the exodus of clubs such as Olinda that led to the eventual creation of the YVMDFL, originally called the MDYVFL in 1966. The Free Press also had about half a dozen clubs from the EDFL reproduced in that series that year, that's why I didn't pick up on that......that's my excuse anyhow.

Up until Millgrove merged with Warburton in 1967, they had been the second most successful team in the YVFA.
Millgrove won 11 premierships ....1914, 1925, 1928, 1930, 1932, 1939, 1940, 1956, 1957, 1961 and 1963.
This placed them behind only Lilydale, who won 19 between 1890 and 1946.
Warburton won on seven occasions...1933, 1937, 1948, 1949, 1952, 1953 and 1958.

Millgrove's first premiership was in 1914 when they defeated Healesville 8.3.51 to 6.10.46. Below are the teams as per the Lilydale Express Sept 11 1914

A premiership medal from that game recently turned up in a Sorrento Op Shop. It was the one awarded to E. Price. It is a beautiful example of the medallions produced at the time, which were 9 carat gold.

The Upper Yarra Football Association was comprised of clubs in the Woori Yallock to Warburton area between 1907 and 1927, including Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Millgrove. It was the smaller district competition to the Yarra Valley Football Association which consisted of clubs such as Lilydale, Yarra Glen and Healesville predominantly.

West Warburton FC changed its name to Wesburn in 1925.

Here are a couple of rules and constitution books for the UYFA for 1924 and 1925.

Hi Mate, where did you get this newspaper clipping of Olinda?
This is my uncle Barry being carried off after kicking the winning goal !

I think it was The Lilydale Express from a bound volume at the Lilydale Historical Society. I'm fairly sure that the Olinda-FCFNC have that picture in their archives.
