I had to listen to the commentators having a wank fest over Cyril (despite doing nothing) and Hawthorn yesterday

12 tackles for the game. You fail like so many others to see what rioli is about. Having said that they do go over the top with him.

Yes Cyril is a great player but so annoying, he does a little thing well, and its like best play of the year, Hamish was the worst yesterday, its like he is his love child.

Good point.

So many of the ex players are poor at the job. Richo and Darcy are just thick.

Darcy's an arseclown.

His latest one is talking about Lachie Neale, born in SA in the south-east, went to school at St Peter's in Adelaide, played footy at the Glenelg Football Club in the SANFL - and now at Fremantle.

Darcy reckons there is a real push for him to go home to Melbourne.

It's not hard Luke. At least hit Wikipedia - you'd be amazed what you could learn.

He had 8 of those in the last quarter, the wankfest had started way before then

He also calls Port Adelaide, Porta-layed.

He's a gimp.

Theres no point dissing hamish, everyone should know by now he has the job as long as his brother is involved in the upper echelons of the afl and he commentates knowing he can say whatever he likes. I hate the guy

It's going to get worse over time, they hire almost exclusively former players now. We can't just blame the commentators themselves, however. Their employers clearly tell them to banter it up, avoid talking about strategy and not to leave a second of dead air.

The future lies with Basil & "Hame".

The problem is that over the years the mass media have relentlessly gone downmarket, because they think that if they do not pitch a product to the lowest common denominator they will lose market share. And to an extent it is a self-fulfilling prophesy as it conditions the "masses" to expect no better.

But the masses (i.e. the average Joe) ain't stupid, and in fact in popular sports are very knowledgeable, because they so closely identify with their sports teams in a vicarious way.

The AFL/Oz sports media doesn't get this, however, and continues to scrape the bottom of the barrel by employing as commentators ex-jocks who, hardly believing their good luck, call a game in the same manner as if they are having a chat over a few beers with their mates in the front bar of some outer-suburban pub.

They get paid good money to do this, apparently.

Go figure...

PS You can criticize the NFL but the NFL TV commentators are excellent.

Generally, Australian networks have little faith in the sport product itself to connect with the audience. So instead of enhancing the audience's understanding of the game and explaning why stuff is important they choose to dial up the 'emotional connection' side of things. Banter, jokes, commentators acting like characters etc. Something that really stands out is replays of goals that aren't replays of goals at all; they replay the player reacting to scoring the goal.

Yep.

Then they apply closed, circular logic.

We put a product on TV -> people watch it -> therefore the product is good so we put it on TV.

Nevermind the fact that it's the only place you can consume this product.

The NFL has some awful commentators as well though. I hate can't stand Chris Collingsworth or the Nantz/simms team.

He definitely isn't the only that's for sure. Why they don't just rotate it so there is no guys with affiliations to either club playing I'll never know. Can't be that hard.
The worst for mine is Riccuito.

He shouldn't be allowed near any Adelaide game.

It's funny how play by play commentators aren't allowed (or advised not to) call games with their team in it such as Brayshaw and McGuire, but special comments guys are free to. I mean Riccuito is a board member!, like how is that a conflict of interest.

It's an utter joke.

He seems to call every single game as well.

Just call the game and call is subtly. Commentators don't need to explode their lungs every time a goal has been kicked, don't have on air banter. Have special comments that are special and not just rubbishing the play or an umpiring decision, commentators go into so much detail these days on every free, watching old games commentators are simply like "well i don't think it was there" then it's not mentioned again. Neutral calling i call it. Just call nothing more, nothing less don't add to something that was fine as it is

I agree with everyone here.

Also sick of the nick names, can we call the players their actual names. Least of the commentating issues though.

If not then I wish that every game had a press red for Ed type option where you could just listen to openly biased commentating of your team.
