Gender: Male
Age: 28
Occupation: Web Manager

1. When was the first time you used email?
1991

2. How often do you use email?
Daily
How many email messages would you send in a standard week?
150+

3. Do you use email for work or leisure or both? Do you email too the other side of the world often?
Both; quite often.

4. What email server do you currently use (eg hotmail, yahoo)? Do you have to pay for the service? Are you happy with this service? Why or why not?
Bigpond Cable; pay; it works and is reasonably fast so I am happy - support for problems is patchy and it is pot luck if you get a knowledgeable support person.

5. What are the advantages of using email?
Cheap, reliable, fast.

6. What are the disadvantages of using email? Loss of 'face to face' aspect engendered by phone, letter or personal meeting.

7. Do you enjoy using email? Why?
Yes. Enjoy keeping in touch and getting notes from people I rarely see.

8. Is email one of your main communication devices? How often would you use email in comparison to writing a letter and using the phone or fax?
Phone and e-mail roughly equal. Fax is purely once a week or so at work.

9. What things can’t be done with email?
Making a cup of tea; ice skating; carpentry.

10. Do you think your emails are secure? Does that worry you? Why/Why not?
Home - No, e-mail at work is secure; this worries me so I do not post much personal sensitive information via e-mail.

11. How do you keep your account manageable? i.e. file management procedures, archiving/disposal?
Extensive set of folders - about 30. I file sent e-mails each month. Delete spam and garbage. Use MailWasher (www.mailwasher.net) to manage spam.

12. Do you print out emails? No.

13. Are you concerned about viruses? Do you have a particular program to combat them?
Yes I am concerned. Main way to combat viruses is DO NOT USE OUTLOOOK. Secondary is to have a virus checker installed.

14. Are you concerned about SPAM (junk mail)? Do you register for many email updates from websites? Are you aware that this causes more SPAM too be sent too your email? Does this worry you?
I am very concerned about spam, so I am selective in the e-mail lists I sign up to. I sign up to each list or service with a unique e-mail address so I know which list the spammers got my e-mail address from, then I chase them down with the proof. The main way your average spammer gets addresses is from CDs of e-mails harvested from the web, or harvesting e-mails themselves.

1. When was the first time you used email?

I think early 2000.

2. How often do you use email? How many email messages would you send in a standard week?

Depends what's happening, around 4.

3. Do you use email for work or leisure or both? Do you email too the other side of the world often?

Never emailed the other side of the world, never use it for school. Just leisure.

4. What email server do you currently use (eg hotmail, yahoo)? Do you have to pay for the service? Are you happy with this service? Why or why not?

I use Hotmail as my parents use the Telstra one. Hotmail is free and I guess overall I'm happy with the service because all I want to do is send and recieve emails - and it lets me do so. The amount of junkmail you get though is ridiculous.

5. What are the advantages of using email?

Extra source of communication, able to keep in touch with people overeast/seas.

6. What are the disadvantages of using email?

Junkmail.

7. Do you enjoy using email? Why?

Yes, it is easy and efficient.

8. Is email one of your main communication devices? How often would you use email in comparison to writing a letter and using the phone or fax?

I use the phone more than email but email more than write a letter. I'd choose the phone over email anyday though.

9. What things can’t be done with email?

Talk to people.

10. Do you think your emails are secure? Does that worry you? Why/Why not?

Yeah I think so, I guess I'm a bit paranoid of a hacker getting into my account but I think it is fairly secure.

11. How do you keep your account manageable? i.e. file management procedures, archiving/disposal?

I delete emails but don't file anything.

12. Do you print out emails?

Only if it has important information I need to keep or know. My hockey coach emails me some information that I sometimes print.

13. Are you concerned about viruses? Do you have a particular program to combat them?

Yes I am. I have a virus checker than checks attatchments to emails.

14. Are you concerned about SPAM (junk mail)? Do you register for many email updates from websites? Are you aware that this causes more SPAM too be sent too your email? Does this worry you?

I am not concerned about spam, it just annoys me. I do not register for email updates from websites and no I didn't know it causes more spam!

I know about SAC's, so always happy to help out...

1. When was the first time you used email?
1999

2. How often do you use email? How many email messages would you send in a standard week?
I use my email every day. I'd send about 50 emails a week.

3. Do you use email for work or leisure or both? Do you email too the other side of the world often?
Both, and no.

4. What email server do you currently use (eg hotmail, yahoo)? Do you have to pay for the service? Are you happy with this service? Why or why not?
I use Hotmail. Don't pay. Satisfied, as the service is efficient.

5. What are the advantages of using email?
It reaches it's destination immediately, allowing for quick communication. Especially good in desperate situations where you need to make contact. Also, it's free.

6. What are the disadvantages of using email?
Spam and viruses.

7. Do you enjoy using email? Why?
Not really. Just a communication device. I enjoy recieving emails off people I like or haven't seen for awhile.

8. Is email one of your main communication devices? How often would you use email in comparison to writing a letter and using the phone or fax?
It's my main communication device, and I'd use it just more than phone, and a lot more then normal mail or fax.

9. What things can’t be done with email?
It can't transfer you to the place where you're emailing.

10. Do you think your emails are secure? Does that worry you? Why/Why not?
Been hacked a few times, and it is very frustrating as I have had to get new email addresses every time. Needs to improve.

11. How do you keep your account manageable? i.e. file management procedures, archiving/disposal?
Delete emails as I go, and keep a tidy inbox.

12. Do you print out emails?
Very, very rarely.

13. Are you concerned about viruses? Do you have a particular program to combat them?

Yes. I use Norton Anti-Virus.

14. Are you concerned about SPAM (junk mail)? Do you register for many email updates from websites? Are you aware that this causes more SPAM too be sent too your email? Does this worry you?
Yeah, it's annoying. I don't register for email updates,I just occasionally get an email or two which I delete without opening, so no real dramas.

1. When was the first time you used email? 1997

2. How often do you use email? How many email messages would you send in a standard week? Every day. Ahh...gees...a few a day?

3. Do you use email for work or leisure or both? Do you email to the other side of the world often? Both. Not really, tends to be people I know or fellow footy fans from within Australia. I do have a few friends overseas though.

4. What email server do you currently use (eg hotmail, yahoo)? Do you have to pay for the service? Are you happy with this service? Why or why not? I use hotmail. I am very happy with this - no complaints!! As everyone knows this is free.

5. What are the advantages of using email? Faster, easier, more convienent.

6. What are the disadvantages of using email? If you can't connect to the net and have an important email coming through, or spam.

7. Do you enjoy using email? Why? Yep, love getting mail! :D

8. Is email one of your main communication devices? How often would you use email in comparison to writing a letter and using the phone or fax?

9. What things can’t be done with email? Really big attachments :D

10. Do you think your emails are secure? Does that worry you? Why/Why not? Yes I think they are. I wouldn't be happy if someone hacked into my account though, but it wouldn't matter, it's not like there is really important stuff in there.

11. How do you keep your account manageable? i.e. file management procedures, archiving/disposal? I put stuff I want to keep into folders. Any good emails I get from friends I might keep for awhile, but put them in the bin after a few months. I go through it perhaps once a month and clear stuff out.

12. Do you print out emails? Some jokes, so I can read them out to people. But not really, no.

13. Are you concerned about viruses? Do you have a particular program to combat them? Yes, because at the end of last year our computer completely crashed coz of a virus. Now we use VET.

14. Are you concerned about SPAM (junk mail)? Do you register for many email updates from websites? Are you aware that this causes more SPAM too be sent too your email? Does this worry you? I get tons of spam, but I have my filter set to exclusive, so it all goes straight to my junk mail anyway. I dunno what site I've signed up for that has sent out my address, but I really regret it now! :D

Gender: Male
Age: 25
Occupation: Currently unemployed

1. 1996

2. Every day. Counting various mailing lists I belong to, probably 10-15 a week on average.

3. Yes, though currently I'm not employed. And no :)

4. AOL (in the US), hotmail, and email.com. I don't pay for any because the AOL account is my parents; I just have my own email address through it.

I think the amount of spam gotten from all three is ridiculous and a big problem. Otherwise the services are fine, considering the cost. Since I just moved here for a minimum of 2-3 years, I am going to get a local ISP, though am unsure which one and what type.

5. Speed is uncomparible. No cost, so no postage. Generally easier to keep track of than real mail. Can easily refer to one somebody sent you.

6. Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam. And spam. Also, security issues; you never know when someone might hack your account and read something very personal.

And the ability for it to be easily abused. Cowards who use it to sent threats and trolls to people.

7. I used to enjoy it all the time, and I still do occasionally. For the most part, though, the sheer volume of junk mail I get really annoys me. And because of my status as the maintainer of a very popular television show's FAQ, I am open to a lot of emails from fans who ask me really stupid questions that I don't bother replying to, and that makes me look bad.

8. Yes, but I tend to like bulletin board systems, Usenet newsgroups and IRC more. In comparison to phone, fax or handwritten letters, almost exclusively anymore.

9. No physical contact. It doesn't have the personal touch real mail does (handwriting, for example).

10. No. And yes it does. It is just simple common courtesy - my life ain't anyone else's business, unless I want it to be.

11. Check it frequently. Which is a pain in the arse but it is the only way I can keep up with the spam. If I leave it alone for three or four days there can be almost 100 spams in my inboxes, and that's with FILTERS.

12. Whenever I have made an online purchase or transaction, I always print it out.

13. Yes, but not as concerned as I should be, probably. I have a VirusScan program and I am very diligent about attachments I get.

14. Spam is something that should be dealt with, and harshly. I do not authorize these services in anyway. I never ask companies to email me updates, but they do anyway. I stopped posting my email address publicly a long time ago, but it hasn't done anything. On any given day, I will have 20-30 spams in each of my inbox, and that doesn't include the ones that my filters catch.

I have one webmail address which I have never given out publicly to anyone, have never used to register anywhere and have never emailed to anybody except for personal use. Within 24 hours of establishing this address and in that time telling absolutely no one single entity about it, I got about a dozen spam.

It is easy to say "just delete it", but when you get the sheer volume I get, you find yourself deleting literally dozens at a time, and the real mail gets lost in the shuffle sometimes.

1. When was the first time you used email? mid-1996, first year uni

2. How often do you use email? How many email messages would you send in a standard week?

Every day. Count on about 50+ per day. so say about 300+ a week.

3. Do you use email for work or leisure or both? Do you email too the other side of the world often?

Both, and yes.

4. What email server do you currently use (eg hotmail, yahoo)? Do you have to pay for the service? Are you happy with this service? Why or why not?

For work, I use work's own servers of course. At home I'm on Telstra Bigpond Cable. It's adequate. when it's not broken.

5. What are the advantages of using email?

speed, convenience.

6. What are the disadvantages of using email?

Sometimes hard to convey something using just text.

7. Do you enjoy using email? Why?

Yes, for the aforementioned convenience factor.

8. Is email one of your main communication devices? How often would you use email in comparison to writing a letter and using the phone or fax?

95%+ email, phone the rest.

9. What things can’t be done with email?

almost anything can be done with email as long as you convert it into electronic form - even pictures, video, audio... pain in the bum, but you can do it.

10. Do you think your emails are secure? Does that worry you? Why/Why not?

Not really. they're simply plan text messages after all. anything really secure should be sent by more secure means, so it doesn't bother me.

11. How do you keep your account manageable? i.e. file management procedures, archiving/disposal?

I try to file my emails into folders and archive them at the end of the year. this is something easier said than done.

12. Do you print out emails?

if it's a record of an online transaction, directions etc, then yes. and all the time at work.

13. Are you concerned about viruses? Do you have a particular program to combat them?

not concerned at all. as long as you are sensible, you're usually pretty safe.

14. Are you concerned about SPAM (junk mail)? Do you register for many email updates from websites? Are you aware that this causes more SPAM too be sent too your email? Does this worry you?

the more reputable organisations have opt-in mailing lists. I don't really care about spam, I just delete it.

Hope that helps.

Gender: Female
Age: 20
Occupation: Student

1. When was the first time you used email? 99 when I first got online.

2. How often do you use email? How many email messages would you send in a standard week? I send about 10 emails a week.

3. Do you use email for work or leisure or both? Do you email too the other side of the world often? leisure. I email my cousins in England, and my friends scattered around the world, as well as a few people who I've gotten to know because of chat programs.

4. What email server do you currently use (eg hotmail, yahoo)? Do you have to pay for the service? Are you happy with this service? Why or why not? I have a few email accounts. My current one is from a friends domain on doteasy. I don't pay for it, but she obviously paid for the domain. No problems once I worked out that I had to use my optus smtp or whatever it's called, on outlook. I've had email accounts on yahoo which have started to bug me with all the spam. Also on hotmail, which wasn't too bad, but then there was the spam that found me as well.

5. What are the advantages of using email? It's easy to get a message to family in England that doesn't take 7 days. It's also quick, you're not expected to write as much if you don't want to. I've gotten to know a couple of cousins because of email - it takes more effort when you're busy, to actually write letters.

6. What are the disadvantages of using email? Spam. Chain letters, and the fact that I get so much less snail mail. I miss handwriting, and little stickers, and just little inclusions

7. Do you enjoy using email? Yes, it's good to open a long email from a friend. Not as good as opening snail mail, but good.

8. Is email one of your main communication devices? How often would you use email in comparison to writing a letter and using the phone or fax? Yes. I use it about as much as I use the phone, unfortunately I don't write many letters, but hopefully I'll change that.

9. What things can’t be done with email? I can't send letters to my grandparents who find it difficult and daunting to use the computer. And if I urgently need someone to know something, it's better to use the phone, because obviously they're not going to be on the computer all day... well most of them aren't... :)

10. Do you think your emails are secure? Does that worry you? Why/Why not? No, but it doesn't worry me all that much, because I don't have anything to hide, and people that I correspond know what I'm likely to send, and what I'm not.

11. How do you keep your account manageable? i.e. file management procedures, archiving/disposal? on outlook. delete subscriptions like horoscopes after I've read them, and fowards, have seperate folders one for email from friends/family, one for email from people who might be emailing me cold, from a website or something, a seperate folder for a newsgroup that I get a large ammount of mail from, which it automatically gets placed into when outlook downloads it from the server - I read that gradually and delete it as I go, but if I didn't have that automatic forwarding thing, I'd never be able to sort my mail from it. One last folder for things that I need to keep - passwords and the like, but don't fit in any other folder.

12. Do you print out emails? Only if they're good and usually long :)

13. Are you concerned about viruses? Do you have a particular program to combat them? Yes, yes.

14. Are you concerned about SPAM (junk mail)? Do you register for many email updates from websites? Are you aware that this causes more SPAM too be sent too your email? Does this worry you? Not concerned, but it bugs me. I do sign up to certain webpage updates, and usually use a different account, just so that I can stop checking it if it gets too much. I haven't had many problems though - I found that I got more email by registering an obvious account like ellie126@hotmail.com (random number), when I first got emai - I'd get about 100 spam a day on that one from signing up to nothing.

You guys rock thanks heaps, especially bluey for making it sticky.

I've got enough responses now too be able to do my report, so it can be taken off sticky (and replaced with The music questionare if possible :). Thats also a SAC and i need 10 males and 10 females to respond.

Thanks
