Theres no doubt our skills have improved a lot.

Talias kicking action looks 100 times better than when he came to us with his Forest Gump ball drop.

Picken seems to be trying for, and hitting passes as well, when I think previously he was more of a bomb it long kind of player. Im kind of amazed at how much he has improved actually.

JJ has some mojo back.

Thoughts?

I don't think skills improve that quickly. Its our game plan that has helped most. More running and spread means more uncontested possessions and easier to kick or handball to advantage if not directly to them. M.boyd is prime example he now has time and space to bring out his skills.

But no doubt some young players have improved as suggested

Would also come down to confidence as well. Bev obviously has a lot of trust in them with how they play so the less you think about and just play footy your disposal is generally better.

General field kicking appears a lot better, but our set shot goal kicking is horrible. We seem to miss so many easy ones.

I'd put this down to the game style, harder running creates more open targets making our field kicking seem much better. On the flip side, the boys are buggered physically and mentally when taking set shots.

Think our handballing has improved the most. Our style means players are drawing players and releasing at the right time and it makes us look very quick. Seems a lot less handballing to the first person in a players vision, and now handballing to the player most likely to get the ball forward quickly.

Our entries inside 50 are still pretty horrible along with the set shots. But general field kicking is massively improved, although a lot of that could be down to the game plan and having more guys in space/open targets to hit compared to the last few years

Agree on Talia. That was my big knock on him. If you can't kick you can't play the game today in any position but he's improved out of sight. There was time in the past I was worried Talia would drop the ball to kick it and miss his boot completely but now he's actually a lot better and he's getting results. Great work from all involved.

Jackie Macrae hasn't improved his kicking. It is woeful. I have never seen a bloke kick more out of bounds on the full than him.
Actually i tell a lie, Travis Cloke when he has set shots.
The point is Macrae is very poor by foot.

Boydy looks like Leon Cameron now off halfback.

Levi Casboult is a worse kick than the lot.

I think our skills are still poor , our game plan has made it look better than it is and we need to continue to improve in those areas , jong is still average with the ball but has improved , talias action is horrific and don't want to knock clay smith but his kicking and action was disgusting macrae doesn't hurt the opposition enough with his cheap kicks and even Bonts can improve once he can cope with a tag he rushes his kicks a lot now

Spot on. It's the game plan that has changed. It also means that players are leading harder/longer to get free.

There is more of a problem with set shots than you think and its not uncommon for team medical staff to persuade the coaching staff not to let the team practice set shots before the game through the fear of injury.

One of Freo's cheer squad members was telling me the same thing in regards to Freo's problem with kicking for set shots as well.

Good to see we have gone out of our way to recruit good kicking skills. Webb and Dale are both excellent, so is Darley and Tom Boyd seems to do everything well. Haven't seen Z.Cordy, Biggs or Daniel in action but hear they are ok. There is no need now to tolerate any players who have poor disposal.
