Do we need a "monster" defender. Out of all of Geelong, St Kilda, Hawthorn, Carlton, Sydney and the Dogs the only defender over 195cm is Lonergan.

Fletcher's the only AA in recent years over that height too.

Plus Trengove is mediocre and can't kick.

I USED to sing the praises of having a 'monster' key defender to compete with the 'monster' forwards, but thegame has gone away from this.
Riewoldt would hardly be a 'monster' forward, nor do any other teams have them.
Your Rance, McGuane and Grimes types are the current prototype!

The discussion was about improving our depth, we will miss Grimes and ability to spoil. Originally I said a "big unit", I still think we need someone to play on the Cloke/Dores stand an deliver forward. We saw when we played these guys we were being out bodied.

Don't get me wrong the game has moved to the more mobile 192-194 defender, but for depth a 194-196 100kg would be usefull and gives us flexibility. If we lost Rance to injury who would have played on Hill?

Probably Post from the team on Saturday, Thursy otherwise, we tried Sylvester out as a big bodied defender a few years back but he dudded it up pretty nicely. As far as improving depth goes, the key is developing the list, the coaches are doing this nicely ATM, who knows what surprises may emeerge over the next year, Astbury fits the bill perfectly once he kegs it up a bit, just needs time to mature and learn the craft.

Right on the money. Wouldnt write Astubury off yet. Could just have second year blues/ whatever. Gourdis, Thursty, Mcguane. 2 of them will go.

Morton will proberly go. TT 99% gone.

target another ruck similar to X, athletic, mobile, can take a mark and put his body on the line.

Another mid or 2 for depth

Defender

and if he have another pick another forward or defender (pending if they settle Post in one position to develop or not)

then Rookies.

Develop our own talent. No players over age 24 to be traded for. We need to improve our defence, and ruck. Small defender and big tall defender are a priority. Still uncertain at this stage, it depends on how Griff comes on etc.

I dont think our depth is strong at all- who do we really have that come come in? webbers? morton should be but will be traded at years end.....big derrix and maybe griff and maybe connors and not much more- we have been fairly lucky with injuries despite our backline - so we really need to continue to build a great list and DH is onto this

I think when we consider depth it has to be potential depth, because currently we are playing players that are still WIP's so to say we don't have depth is misleading, players like Astbury, Post, Dea, Webbs, Hislop, Derrickz, Nason, Helbig and a few others if developed well will either be in the team or just out of it in a year or so, that's the key, it's not about our current depth, we are a WIP period.

if we offered up post and farmer with current compensation pick with some sort of trade deal we may get an even better compensation pick from GWS and could work well in our favour

Gourdis should be better than McGuane. Taller, stronger and faster. Yes, his disposal is questionable, but everything with this guy is linked to confidence. I'd like to see what could happen if we get him 5-10 solid AFL games in a row. Doesn't look like that will happen, and he will probably be delisted at the end of the year :(

Gourdis will get a shot now I'd yhink with grimes going down.

Only had astbury left. Who j a baby.
And thursty who is limited

Miller looks a forward option. Post looks ok with vickery-browne ruck combo.

Can you please name Geelongs small defenders for me, as they seem to go alright defensively and rarely ever does a Big or a Small forward get on top of there defence.

The myth that you need a Small guy to defend on the smaller forwards is a massive myth, all you need is a defender who is agile enough below his knees to cover a small forward, Dylan Grimes does alright on large and small forwards and the guy isn't small himself he sits at 193 CMs.

It's a bit like all the commentators fapping over Crameri all year saying who do you play on him do you go small or tall, well apparently all you need is a decent defender who is accountable to beat him.

Just so people are aware, Jake Batchelor played on Stewart Crameri for the majority of the game last week and absolutely took him to the cleaners and Crameri is far bigger then our boy Batchelor who did a superb job on him.

Crameri
190CM - 95KG
Batchelor
188CM - 78KG

Fair post, but I reckon Batchelor is a lot bigger than 78kg. He has the physique of a third year player I reckon.

Great pick up.
