i believe a teams success depends upon the strength of the weakest six players. unfortunately our weakest six are quite weak.

It's the weakest links that makes playing the zone very difficult because of the cost of turnovers.

I came away from the richmond NAB cup game thinking we do not have the overall skills to play a zone and nothing has changed my opinion today

at least thornton doesn't spin in circles, fall over then handpass to an opponent. he is easily better than Head. The guy breaks the lines and has decent skills.

He breaks the lines then dishes out hospital handballs. Thornton is terrible one on one, crap in the air and lacks confidence.

Probably better than Head, but there would be plenty of WAFL players better than both of them.

i dont think our backline was that bad. We did not get the ball out of the middle cleanly enough and our skill errors meant the ball came back in so quickly that our backs had a difficult job.

Sandilands was very dissappointing. His value tonight was of little consequence to the team.

1. Tarrant was really good and lets hope he can keep it up.:thumbsu:
2. Pavlich is not a midfielder and he looked disinterested in the game. Play him up forward where he belongs. Same with Murphy.
3. Duffield & Peake:thumbsu:
4. Keep playing Hill and Suban. Todays game was a good lesson and I think Suban looked slightly better. Love his kicks.
5. Hopefully it was last game for Head.:thumbsd::thumbsd:
6. Johnson's kicks .
7. Did we have a game plan?:thumbsd:
8. We tried very hard except in the last quarter and if Bulldogs were not as accurate and if we were more accurate it could have been a different story tonight.
9. Too many players played out of their positions and it took Harvey way too long to react :thumbsd:.

I think you guys are all missing the most important aspect of tonight.

Were the goal posts at the subi end moving a lot, or was it just chops' brain doing chops brain's thing?

Spot on, Hayden doesn't make us a ten goal better side.

Im not quite sure if you understand the type of player Roger Hayden is. The defence practicly revolvse around him, he stops a goal a quarter and sets up another one. His skill makes his team mates around him stand up that little bit more. Im not saying ten goals but stop one and set up one and the the team lifts.

As for Tarrant, well if it wasnt for him it would have been worse.

Peake - Best form ive seen him in since 05.

Tarrant - easily our BOG. Won so many 1 on 1s. Congrats on a successful move to the backline. Should stay there all season.

Sandilands - has continued in the form from last year

Browne - if you run, players will chase you....no awareness whatsoever. 13 disposals just doesn't cut the mustard for a guy who has been in the system so long. Its not like they were damaging disposals either. 10/10 for effort, 3/10 for return. DROP TO WAFL.

Head - has a thread started about how terrible he was, enough said. If Browne got a 3/10. There is just no score low enough to indicate how bad your game was. DROP TO WAFL.

Crowley - lucky you have credits in the bank. Otherwise you'd be straight tp the WAFL. Disgusting effort. Clean up the skills, most kids can hit a handball target 2m away.

COACHING STAFF 2/10.
2 points for realising Tarrant is a superb backman. Apart from that, what else have you done all summer. The same players still can't handball. We don't spread from the midfield well enough once we have the ball. We have no direction or purpose in our ball movement. Our zone is full of holes. Seriously, WHAT has been the focus this summer?

F***k that was a shocker. Anyone who says that performance was acceptable for any reason is a complete toss. What I don't understand is if we only lost 9? games last year by under 10 points why has the team been turned ass about face? Why haven't we filled the holes we lost and worked on refining our tested structure? Why was our backline pish tonight? Because our key defenders were all playing in the forward line.

Looked to me like we were really flat because of a heavy training cycle.

I think that took away a lot of intensity.

Would explain the stress related injuries as well.

Expect a much sharper team about 8 rounds in.

Accurate or inaccurate depending who your talking about made the difference for most of the game.
We messed up too many easy scoring chances. They nailed most of their easy chances. If we could have kept score board pressure they might have got the yips. Instead we missed our chances and they took theirs and got on a roll.

I think Harvey has been trying to tell us not to expect too much yet so i'll hold off any massive criticisms to see what develops over the next couple of months.

Yeah, I'm quite looking forward to being 0-8
Honestly, what were you expecting?

They should be implementing the program as if they were a finals team so that the players KNOW what it is like to go through a season with that as the aim and training structure.

No point peaking for round 1... although a decent start to a season would be nice just once in a while...

There was mention of "quarterbacks" in a old thread, and I mentioned Hayden as our equivalent to Hodge. It used to be Black before he had his personal issues, and no-one else has stepped in to fill the void except for Roger. He is our defensive general.

Head was obviously picked up to replace Black, but he's not cut out for it.

Roger not in the team fcks us royally. Playing three key defenders in the forward line for 1/2 the game... that's either throwing the cubs to the wolves and seeing how the younger players go (fck Josh Head back to Souths FFS), or Harvey had a master plan that would've worked if we hadn't turned over the ball so heckin'g often... I'm glad I was at the city end of the ground for the last quarter as I had the sunset to look at instead of that deplorable capitulation...

I agree with you on the decent start Chops, but shit skills has nothing to do with fitness. Turnovers and poor kicking has nothing to do with being flat after a heavy pre-season. Meekly giving up 2 minutes into the last quarter after two shots on goal from easy angles get sprayed, that's what happens in round 20 when you're not playing finals, not round 1.

I'd rather see that game if we had 9 debutants, but for players like Head and Johnson to miss targets, this whole 1-2-3 handball in clearances to get stuffed up time and time again, and no having the foresight to see how the Bulldogs ran the ball wide AAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL the time and not play anyone 5 metres wide of a pack is beyond me completely.

I would disagree.

I would also disagree with the hierarchy coming out and saying we wont be playing finals etc. etc. because that's what leads to the other things you mentioned. It's effectively the same thing.

Great, so we'll start to hit form just in time for that wonderfully easy run of games we have from rounds 8-15...

Geez, next week and the derby in round 6 are looking like crunch games for us now...

Me too, can't believe some of the knee jerk reactions of some.

FFS, would someone string Harvey up and force him to leave McPharlin in the backline? I don't give a shit who we're up against, you can't build a backline around Dodd. No bloody wonder it's a shambles when our best and 2nd best key defenders are sitting up the other end not kicking goals.
