So the AFL have confirmed the arrangements for a draw on Saturday. Pretty standard stuff
I actually have two questions about the possibility of scores being tied at the end of extra time.
1) It’s next score wins. Huh? Shouldn’t it be next goal wins? I mean, the object of the game is to kick goals. Should it really be decided by a punch through for a behind from a ruck or marking contest, or a rugby style play to just push it over the line? We have the deliberate behind rule now, so you can’t just rush behinds and get a kick out.
Otherwise, why not just play another round of extra time, like basketball does? What’s the hurry? What’s another 10 mins of play?
2) The siren won’t sound? Play will just continue until there’s a score? WTF??? How would this work at the ground? There’s no countdown clocks on the scoreboard. How would players and the crowd know time is up and it’s switched to “next score wins”??
Surely the bell should go, everybody knows what’s going on, then the umpire balls it up to play golden point - the ball-up can occur in the centre, or just where play stopped at the siren.
Example - the ball’s deep in a forward line... all the attacking team needs to do is punch it through among what would probably be 36 players on the ball. Yet they don’t even know so are trying to get it clear for a kick?
It sounds like a recipe for disaster. How could a flag be decided in this manner? Haven’t the AFL considered the possibilities?
What am I missing...
