This idea had been mooted in the Bitcoin mining thread and it is high time the concept went ahead. First, those of us who are interested in participating need to agree upon a framework for the competition. The basic idea is simple: see who can increase their starting capital of $x the most over the course of 12 months via investment into cryptocurrencies.

Initially I would have liked to have made it so that entrants need to actually buy into whichever currency they back but, having gone through the process of buying CC myself, I foresee that this might be too challenging for some people to bother. I'm still happy to go this way but am also content to be outvoted if the majority see fit.

The other alternative would be to allow all contestants to play with imaginary money, which I think will still be fun - just not quite as fun. If we do it this way, we can make it so that each contestant starts off with, say, $1000 USD imaginary money and can invest it into any CC they like at current prices. We can then either lock those investments in OR allow periodic portfolio adjustments throughout the year; if we go with the latter, it might be that once per month we allow each contestant to trade into/out of whatever CC they like with whatever CC they already have.

Because BTC-e is currently one of the largest and most respected exchanges for CC and has markets for BTC, LTC, FTC, PPC, NMC, NVC and XPM, I propose that we take our prices from this exchange if we are going to use imaginary money. Cryptsy has more currencies on offer but nowhere near the same volumes so it is far more volatile.

For the next day or two I suggest we come to agreement on how we want this competition to be structured and who wants in on the first (and possibly last) Bigfooty CC Challenge. I hope we can then get the comp up and running by the first week of December (i.e. the end of this weekend).

Well keen.

Think imaginary money is better for this. opens it up to more people, and means we will all start on an even amount.

given the price of BTC you'd probably need to start with 10,000 USD.

Sounds good to me.

1) $10k USD starting bank.
2) All major cryptocurrencies (Top 40 on http://coinmarketcap.com/) allowed.
3) Any starting portfolio combination allowed (incl fiat cash for crypto bears/skeptics).
4) Beginning prices as listed on BTC-e OR Cryptsy at time of posting/PMing.
5) Transaction fees etc ignored for starting/finishing portfolio.

Winner is the dude whose portfolio is worth the most USD in twelve months time.

This thread hasn't got the attention I had hoped but I'm happy to get the ball rolling asap. I propose that all starting portfolios are to be determined by COB Tuesday. So end date would be COB 03/12/14.

Contestants can PM me their starting portfolio if they fear that somebody might copy it or otherwise get an advantage from seeing it before finalising their own starting portfolio. I will post them up after COB Tuesday, along with my own which I will PM to Caesar to verify that I am not myself taking advantage of this information. Otherwise people can begin posting up their starting portfolios now.

Thoughts?

Am I allowed to short sell?
Unfortunately this mechanism does not really exist yet in the cryptocurrency market (as far as I am aware) so no.

sounds good to me.

likewise would have thought more people would be keen to get involved given the interest on the other thread. maybe tag a few people in, they might not realise it's just pretend money.

given the nature and ever changing marketplace i also think you should allow any new form of CC to be added into the pool at any time it reaches the top 40 on the coin marketcap. there are new coins spring up all the time.

Sounds like a great idea, but looking at those market cap graphs I'll be buggered if I can get my head around what is moving these markets. Some very noisy graphs.

comps like this never work b/c there is no skin in the game.

optimal strategy is to just buy $10k of the whatever stock/bond/cryptocurrency you believe to be the most volatile.

on that note having had a 10 sec look at the graphs @ coinmarket cap i'll have $10k worth of junkcoin.

are you allowed to trade during the 12 month period?

checkraiseulite I partially agree with your first sentence, like your third sentence, and am happy to throw the question in your fourth sentence open to contestants to discuss. I think a once-per-month allowance to trade your currencies would be a good thing for the Challenge, even though I personally plan to sit on my portfolio for the full twelve months once it is selected.

yeah i reckon a one day trading window every month is more than enough, and the prices should be taken at a one moment "snap shot" of the crypto currency market. So for instance you would say right now BTC is 1200, LTC is 40, PPC is 7 etc and you have 24 hours from this post to make any trades based on those prices, regardless of what the coins do for the next 24 hours.

Otherwise you'll have people coming up with all sorts of crazy calculations and it would become impossible to manage.

That being said i wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a "Bitcoin trading game" out there somewhere where you can play with pretend money and CCs and it manages the whole thing for you....

Excellent idea. Last Friday of the month, each month, sound good? As in, prices posted on the Friday, people have until the end of the weekend to update their portfolios (if they so wish).

If I knew how to program, I would make a website based on this idea myself. That is, I want to steal your idea, but don't even know how

It's actually not a bad idea. You could probably charge a bit for companies like mtgox, vircurex etc,. to advertise on it too... I'll stick on the pile of things to look at, along with a million other things :(
