One day after the Hawks won their historical three-peat, let's talk about the players on their list. They are highly criticised about not having many natural drafted players, however let's just look back at the insane list Hawthorn has and where those players could have easily been had these trades not occurred.

1. Jordan Lewis (Taken at Pick #7 in 2004, traded from Collingwood for Picks #10 and #37. The Hawks also recruited Bo Nixon through that trade, who only played one game - Collingwood selected Chris Egan with #7, and traded Pick #37 for Chad Morrison - Eagles selected Mark LeCras)

2. Sam Mitchell (Taken at Pick #36 in 2001, traded from Fremantle for Luke McPharlin and Trent Croad. Hawks also received Picks #1 and #20, and selected Luke Hodge and Daniel Elstone (0 games) respectively)

3. Josh Gibson (Traded from North Melbourne in 2009 alongside Pick #69 in exchange for Picks #25 and #41 (Aaron Black and Ayden Kennedy), Hawks also managed to take Taylor Duryea with Pick #69)

4. Ben McEvoy (Traded from St Kilda for Pick #18 and Shane Savage in 2013. Saints took Luke Dunstan (Terrific player), but McEvoy has won two flags in two years and is one of the best ruckman in the comp.

8. James Frawley (Free Agent selected in 2014, Demons selected Christian Petracca with Pick #3 compensation, injured for entire first season. Frawley plays crucial part in 2015 GF)

9. Jonothan O'Rourke (Only played two games, but was originally a Giant, traded alsongside Pick #43 in exchange for Picks #19 and #40 - Giants traded to Carlton alsongside 14 games worth of two players for Pick #7, who didn't play a game in 2015 - Blues took Blaine Boekhorst)

10. Grant Birchall (Drafted at Pick #14 in 2005, originally traded by Port Adelaide in exchange for Nathan Lonie, delisted in 2008)

11. Luke Hodge (Taken at Pick #1 in 2001, traded from Fremantle for Luke McPharlin and Trent Croad. Hawks also received Picks #20 and #36, and selected Daniel Elstone (0 games) and Sam Mitchell respectively)

12. Brian Lake (Traded from Western Bulldogs in 2012 alongside Pick #27, in exchange for Picks #21 (Nathan Hrovat) and #43 (Traded to West Coast (for Koby Stevens), then to St Kilda (Josh Saunders) - Hawks traded pick #27 with #63 (Passed) and Stephen Gilham (15 games) for Picks #28 (Tim O'Brien), Pick #66 (Kaiden Brand) and Jed Anderson)

14. Jack Gunston (Traded from Adelaide alongside Picks #53 (Alex Woodward) and #71* in exchange for Picks #24*, #46 (Nicholas Joyce - 0 games), and #64 (Cam Ellis-Yolmen - 12 games)

*Pick 71 (Cameron Sutcliffe) was then traded with Picks #29 (Alex Forster) and #58 (Lachie Neale) in exchange for Picks #38 (Jordan Kelly) and #56 (Tom Downie) LOST THIS TRADE

*Pick 24 was traded to Gold Coast for Picks #27 (Sam Kerridge), #31 and #68

15. David Hale (Traded in 2010 alongside Pick #52 in exchange for Pick #71 and and end-of-first-round compensation pick)

16. Tim O'Brien (Involved in the Brian Lake trade)

17. Ben Stratton (Drafted with Pick #46 in 2009, originally traded from Sydney with Picks #39 (Sam Grimley) and 70 (Matt Suckling - Rookie elevation) in exchange for Josh P. Kennedy and Ben McGlynn) LOST THIS TRADE

18. Matt Spangher
(Traded with Pick #70 (Michael Osborne) in exchange for Pick #64 (Matthew Dick - now at Carlton))

24. Billy Hartung (Drafted in 2013 with Pick #59, traded from St Kilda with Pick #24 (John Ceglar rookie elevation) in exchange for Pick #19 (Blake Acres - decent player))

25. Daniel Howe (Taken at Pick #31 in 2014, traded from Adelaide alongside Picks #50 and #68 in exchange for Kyle Cheney, Luke Lowden and Picks #43, #47 and #49 - combined 12 games in 2015, excluding Cory Gregson (Pick #47), traded to Geelong)

26. Teia Miles (Taken at pick #49 - involved in Daniel Howe trade)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

26 players on that list who weren't originally owned by Hawthorn. Is that incredible or not? Some players are pretty much irrelevant, like Howe, Miles, Brand, Simpkin and Ceglar, but everything counts, even the trades they lost. If anyone else would like to add up how many games played for Hawthorn all these guys have played compared to those traded away from Hawthorn, feel free because it's currently 1:04am here and I need to hit the hay.

Trading picks doesn't mean that the player taken with those picks didn't originally belong to the club.

I generally reckon it does. I mean that all these players who have won 2-4 Premierships could have easily ended up elsewhere, we would have had different premiers and players' careers would have been different.

Really?....Stratton 100+games & 3 premierships. Suckling 100+games & 2 premierships>>>>
Kennedy 150+games & McGlynn 100+ games & 1 premiership between them.

Yes....Very impressive, although selective....Here's a matching list of all our failures in the same period:

1.Rick Ladson....Pick 16 in the 2001 Draft....O.K, played 116 games including the 08 flag. Missed: James Kelly/Jason Gram

2. Daniel Elstone....Pick 20 in the 2001 Super-Draft....Dud & 0 games. Missed: Steve Johnston....Nuf said.

3. Luke Brennan....Pick 8 in the 2002 draft....Played 19 games & a dud. Missed: McIntosh, Schulz, Minson.

4. 2003 Draft...Re-traded for Croad, but our other 5 picks aren't worth mentioning.

5. Matt Little....Pick 26 in the 2004 draft....Admittedly our only miss that year. Missed: Van Berlo, Lecras & Rosa.

6. Xavier Ellis....Pick 3 in the 2005 draft...O.K, decent player & a flag in 08 but injury plagued & didn't reach 100 games. Missed: Scott Pendlebury....Nuf said.

7.Beau Dowler....Pick 6 in the 2005 Draft....Complete spud. Missed: Ryder, Higgins, Jones & Hurn....Nuf said.

8. Max Bailey....Pick 18 in the 2005 draft....Cruelled by 3 knee reco's

9. Beau Muston....Pick 22 in the 2005 draft....Cruelled by 3 knee reco's.

10. Mitch Thorp....Pick 6 in the 2006 draft....Spud. Missed Joel Selwood....Nuf said.

11. Brent Renouf....Pick 24 in the 2006 draft....Spud. Missed: McKenzie, Tippett, Edwards.

12. Jarryd Morton....Pick 33 in the 2006 draft....Spud. Missed: Goldstein, Gray....Nuf said.

13. Josh Kennedy....Pick 40 in the 2006 super-draft....Lost for peanuts.

14. Mitch Hallahan....Pick 38 in the 2010 draft....Spud. Missed: Luke Parker....Nuf said.

2011 draft is still too close, so I'll leave it there....Though I'm sure you get the picture.

'It's stupefying to think that we potentially lost a shot at more flags by stubbornly refusing to recruit a big bodied defender. And then now, with two decent rivals having more than one monster forward, we let go the very guy who came in and illustrated that very point, by winning us the 2013 GF.

Sure, he was old, and maybe slowing. But I don't get why they rolled the dice on that again. Frawley is awesome, but he was also required to play on someone even with Lake in the side. And when both Frawley and Lake were up and going, damn, we looked very strong down back.'

Couldn't have surmised it any better myself #toomanysquibs....Well said.:thumbsu:

I think in the sense of player talent, yes you lost this trade as sydney got the better of that trade, in saying that you had players who were better which were the same type (hodge, Mitchell, lewes > Kennedy and Mglynn) ??, so having stratton ended up being better off for your structure/team balance anyway.

Ive always though Sydney got them way to cheaply, but they were excess so there value wasnt as much.

It was more a case of Sydney being able to afford players that we couldn't continue to keep on. Give Hawthorn and extra million dollars in the salary cap and we'd still have Josh Kennedy.

Yeah good point, forgot about the potential salary cap issues you would have had keeping the players together. Scary to think you had both of them plus the potential to draft selwood and pendles.
