Damnit, this affects my empire team grrr...

The Athletic's Zak Keefer reports Rodrigo Blankenship is competing for the Colts' starting kicker job with Eddy Pineiro.
Fantasy managers who rostered the bespectacled Blankenship in 2020 may be surprised to see the second-year kicker compete for the starting gig with journeyman Pineiro, but Hot Rod missed five of his 37 field goal tries and two of his 45 extra points last season. He was a solid fantasy option because the Colts had the fourth most field goal attempts in the league. Pineiro has been impressive in training camp, Keefer said. Fantasy managers might want to hold off on drafting Blankenship until he's secured the Week 1 starting job.

NFL Network's Albert Breer said rookie TE Kylen Granson has "justified Frank Reich's pre-draft love."
The accidental Madonna reference (look it up, zoomers) is the latest hype for the fourth round rookie tight end out of SMU. Granson has reportedly made a "strong impression" at Colts camp and seems primed for some pass-catching duties this season. How much is anyone's guess. Colts tight ends in 2020 saw 120 targets, with the now-departed Trey Burton leading the group with 47. Granson will compete for targets with Mo Alie-Cox and Jack Doyle. At SMU, Granson played 50 percent of his snaps from the slot in two years with the Mustangs, averaging 16.1 yards per catch and finishing second in school history among tight ends in both receptions (78) and receiving yards (1,257). He only has fantasy value in deeper formats that artificially inflate tight end scoring.

Frank Reich: Jacob Eason is “in the driver’s seat” to start with Carson Wentz out

Posted by Myles Simmons on August 2, 2021, 12:32 PM EDT

With quarterback Carson Wentz potentially out for 12 weeks after undergoing foot surgery, the Colts have to figure out who is going to replace him.

At least for now, the answer appears to be already on their roster in Jacob Eason.

Indianapolis selected the former Georgia and Washington quarterback in the fourth round of last year’s draft. Eason was the team’s third quarterback throughout last season behind Philip Rivers and Jacoby Brissett.

“The job is Jacob’s right now … and he’s gotta earn it,” Reich said, via Zak Keefer of TheAthletic.com. “But he’s in the driver’s seat.”

Because there were no preseason games last year, Eason hasn’t played since Washington’s victory over Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl back on Dec. 21, 2019. If he does end up as the Colts’ starter to enter the season, he’ll likely get some significant playing time in the preseason.

Indianapolis recently signed Brett Hundley as another option at quarterback. The club also has Sam Ehlinger and Jalen Morton at the position.

Or the Colts could go the trade route to acquire a veteran QB that can help the team compete immediately. Chicago’s Nick Foles would seem to be a strong candidate, as Foles won Super Bowl LII with Reich as Eagles offensive coordinator back in 2017. Of course, Foles also replaced Wentz that season after the quarterback tore his ACL.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Colts will not be trading for Nick Foles, Marcus Mariota, Gardner Minshew, or any other veteran quarterback "at this time."
Per Mort, Carson Wentz (foot surgery) will start his rehab in two weeks and has yet to be ruled out for the Week 1 opener. The Colts will take a wait-and-see approach under center, rolling with Jacob Eason, Brett Hundley, and rookie Sam Ehlinger for the remainder of the summer, giving Wentz a chance to be back early in the season. If things get complicated, Indy's tune could obviously change. Foles' connection with coach Frank Reich has made him the Colts' most likely trade target.

Colts head coach Frank Reich said G Quenton Nelson will miss significant time with a foot injury.
Nelson will undergo surgery and miss about the same amount of time as Carson Wentz, who had a similar foot surgery Tuesday. Wentz is expected to be sidelined for 5-12 weeks. The Colts picked up Nelson's fifth-year option in April after he proved dominant in his first round years with the team. His loss is another gut punch for the Colts. Every fantasy-relevant player will be impacted by the loss of Wentz and Nelson.

Quenton Nelson to have the same foot surgery as Carson Wentz

Posted by Mike Florio on August 3, 2021, 12:13 PM EDT

The Colts should shed the horseshoe from their helmets. In recent years, the only luck it’s brought them is bad.
Coach Frank Reich told reporters on Tuesday the All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson will undergo the same surgical procedure on his foot that quarterback Carson Wentz had Monday.

And so the timeline for Nelson’s is identical to Wentz’s: 5-12 weeks. The injury happened when someone stepped on Nelson’s foot during Monday’s practice.

Nelson landed on the All-Pro team in each of his first three seasons. As noted by Colts.com, he’s only the fifth player in the last 50 years to do that, joining Earl Campbell, Keith Jackson, Barry Sanders, and Lawrence Taylor.
The Colts currently are also missing new left tackle Eric Fisher (PUP list) and center Ryan Kelly, who suffered an elbow injury early in camp.

The Athletic's Stephen Holder reports Colts sixth-round QB Sam Ehlinger is "off to a faster start than anticipated" and "has people within the organization buzzing."
With Carson Wentz (foot surgery) out 5-12 weeks, both sophomore Jacob Eason and rookie Ehlinger are seeing elevated reps with the first- and second-team offenses, respectively. While Eason would be the starter if the season started today, Ehlinger has suddenly put himself in the conversation with a strong start to camp. He's running with the twos against the No. 2 defense, but Ehlinger brings all the stuff we can't measure to the table. “I’m really impressed with where Sam is,” coach Frank Reich said. “Not only mentally, but whatever the ‘It’ factor is. It’s not too big for him. You can feel that. He’s got a presence about him. And he has instincts. You can just feel that he has good quarterback instincts. I told him that it’s very apparent he understands how to keep the game simple. And that’s a big deal.” Ehlinger was a four-year starter at Texas as a dual-threat quarterback. He doesn't have a big arm, but he can create with his legs and knows where to throw the ball. If nothing more, this will be a fun battle to watch during Indy's preseason.
