So their worst contested possession player gets more contested ball than literally half our team. Great.
yep, we are really really bad at contested footy. In some parts that is age but it is also mindset, we don't go in hard enough. The positive is that Viney isn't playing

Numbers say demons win.

R22 Lions vs Demons at MCG, 20 August, 2017
(0 to 10 games - Lions 2 vs. Demons 0)
0 to 24 games - Lions 5 vs. Demons 2
25 to 49 games - Lions 3 vs. Demons 9
50 to 99 games - Lions 7 vs. Demons 3
100 to 199 games - Lions 7 vs. Demons 5
200+ games - Lions 0 vs. Demons 3

Extra stats:
Average games played - Lions 72.5 vs. Demons 89.6 (= -17.2 games on average)
Average age - Lions 23.6 vs. Demons 24.9 (= -1.3 years on average)
Average height - Lions 189cm vs. Demons 187.6cm (= +1.3cm on average)
Average weight - Lions 86.5kg vs. Demons 87.4kg (= -0.9kg on average)

7 vs 8 with over a hundred games isn't a big difference. We do still have quite an experienced midfield.

On experience we're behind again (of course, we're playing North), but it's all in the 50+ category. Around the ground we're even or ahead on most of these stats. Even marks

For fun, here's North's named squad against one with no changes:

The experience and age numbers say fairly unambiguously that North will win this. We know better, though, don't we?

A big thanks to both you guys for the work you've put into this thread over the year. Its been a great resource and I know its one that I've checked each and every week to see how we stack up. will be interesting to see how this improves as the years go on and to look back at these stats to see patterns emerge. Cheers Jivlain and fanackapan the hard work is very much appreciated. We hope to see both of you back next year again.

its a real indictment on North those stats. to be that experienced and old and still in a wooden spoon fight.

you do get the impression another deep cut is coming this off season probably Thomas, Goldstein and Hanson's last games for North which is average of 180 games and 29 years old. (In fairness if just those 3 were replaced with 20yo 10 gamers the stats would align much more closely)

But beyond that you have Scott Thompson (200 games and 31) Waite (34 and 230 games) and Swallow (30yo and 223 games) who are maybe coin tosses to continue at North. Thompson and Swallow you'd think someone might have a nibble at for 1-2 years to fill a gap.

And surely this is Majak Daws last year at 26 but only 32 games. and depending on contracts guys like Jacobs and Mullett who have played 10 games a year for 6/7 years and never cemented a regular spot in the team.

In the meantime even if all those players left they'd still have. Gibson, Ziebell, Tarrant, Wright, Cunnington, Atley over 100 games as a base of experience to work with (and Ben Brown, Luke McDonald and Marley Williams who are all solid with 80 games experience)

I guess it depends on if Martin takes the money - ironically he'd eat up money they'd want to pay these players but would also mean they'd likely want Thompson, Waite, Swallow and maybe even Goldy to stay and try and jump back up to finals quickly with Dusty and two top 20 picks this draft.

A big thanks to both you guys for the the hard work is very much appreciated. We hope to see both of you back next year again.

Wow can't believe how close it is. Just from the stats we should be favourites. Interesting.

The addition of Hodge over a debutant bumps our averages games to 87.7 from 73.8. That's a crazy impact for a single player.

Luke Hodge may or may not have a huge effect on the Lions' on-field results, but he will have a huge impact on our experience and age statistics.

We go in older and more experienced, taller and heavier, although none of those to a statistically significant effect. They don't make us favourites, but unusually, they don't make us underdogs.
