What is it that over the past two years we turn into a rabble after getting on an airplane?

It's a ****ing discrace.

That said, they were too good tonight, too disciplined, killed us in the guts. Had we played the entire game like the third qtr, could have been closer. No surpise we came into the game when riciouto went off. ****ing slaughered us.

Why the **** did we insist on kicking long last night?

Or more to the point - why the **** have we been kicking long to marking contests all year?

We never (NEVER) did that in 2000.

I find it hard to believe that the game has changed so much in 3 years that we've been forced to adopt the completely opposite gameplan to the one we had when we were killing everybody we ran into.

I'm sure I said this at the start of the season, but it seems to me that we are playing a 1980 game.

ie.

Kick long, hope somebody marks it, kick long, hope somebody marks it, kick long, hope somebody marks it, repeat ad nauseum.....

Are we the most impatient side in the competition?

Let me answer - YES.

We've been playing stupid football all year.

"Stupid football" imo is kicking to 50/50 contests. It's completely inexcusable in the year 2003.

I don't know if Sheedy is to blame for this or not (I'm a Sheedy fan btw) but whoever's responsible needs to have a good look at themselves, our team, and the state of the game.

We are not a big side. Why kick to contests?

Why take a mark on the half-back line and then without a second thought play on with a dinky little rubbish handball to a player running past when the only resulting option is to kick quickly and long to a marking contest?

I'd like to see us hold the ball up a bit more - keep possession, work the ball forward methodically rather than impatiently.

We have a team that, if allowed to play a suitable game, could quite easily be in the top 4 imo.

You guys, and the Essendon coaching staff, should take a good look at how we played our footy in 2000.

It's so obvious where we're going wrong.

Quit moving the ball on at all costs! It's ridiculous, rarely achieves it's objective, and results in us turning the ball over more and more each week.

As for kicking to contests last night in the wet, why?

It's so 1980.

If I don't see a change in the way we play our footy before the end of the year, I'll be jumping onto windyhill's "Get Rid Of Sheeds" bandwagon.

Somebody has lost the plot down at Essendon.

[/end mid-season rant]

I don't know why everyone is making a big deal about Essendon not winning interstate ... when have teams like Geelong, Bulldogs, St Kilda, Carlton, Richmond won interstate? (yeah- back in 2000/01 when interstate teams were beatable like West Coast, Sydney etc.).

For example, St. Kilda have lost their last 12 interstate- last interstate win was at the WACA in 1999. At least we won one last year.

This has nothing to do with the fact Essendon are 'crap', it's because the interstate teams are all peaking at the same time and Victorian football is going through a 'bit of a rough patch'. Just think back to 2000, when the Lions were the only interstate team to be in the top 8 ... probably be a similar scenario in 5 or 6 years time.

Look at that list of teams, arguably the 5 worst in the AFL. We don't want to be in that company. The truly good teams win wherever they play, and that's what we want to be.

If we settle for rubbish interstate that's what we'll end up getting at home.

It's not just the losing that concerns us. It's also that there appears to be no effort what so ever once they get to Tullamarine.

Ok dont do this as a favour me, but to yourselves, would you stop mentioning or trying to compare with the year 2000 PLEASE!
No one will replicate a year like that again, well not for another 20 or 30 years and you still want to compare the shell of the side we have now to the 2000 side?? I'll only give you 4 names, Michael Long, Dean "yes its my fault we are underachivers" Wallis, Darren Bewick and John Barnes. Name me the players (barring our obvious best) who could even come close to some of these players........NONE! Get the year 2000 out of your minds, only refer to it when you feel down and need a pick up.

What crap. How many games are these teams winning here, let alone interstate? Essendon are, or should be, a lot better than these teams.

Granted, but the point is, it's the same club, same staff...we should be trying to play the same style of football, and we're not by a long shot. A football team doesn't just change that dramatically over 2-3 years, or at least when we still have a lot of the same brilliant players - Hird, Lloyd, Fletcher, Johnson & Johnson, Misiti, Mercuri (maybe), Solomon, Wellman...much of the core is still there.

Is this in reply to my post?

If so.....

The reason I mention 2000 is because I believe we still have a side that is suited to playing the style of football we played that year.

Yet, our style his year has been the opposite of that.

I simply ask why?

We are not a big enough and strong enough side to be kicking to contests all day long. We have a smaller (younger) side, a fairly skillful side that is really suited more to playing possession football.

As we did in 2000 so well.

I don't for a minute expect us to put in another year like that, but it seems to me as though our team (players? coach? I don't know...) is ignoring 2000 and the way we played that year.

I say look back at it and learn.

As I said, I don't see how the game has changed so much in 3 years that we have been forced to adopt a completely different gameplan.

But that's fine - if you don't mind watching us play like that, then I guess you'll be looking forward to us turning the ball over at half-forward for the rest of the year.

I loved the year 2000, there was nothing better than belting out "weeeeeeeee are the champions" and knowing we were the champs. And my post wasnt directed at anyone in here or BomberTalk and while I do agree with the comment :

we still have a lot of the same brilliant players - Hird, Lloyd, Fletcher, Johnson & Johnson, Misiti, Mercuri (maybe), Solomon, Wellman...much of the core is still there.

But the remaining players cant be anywhere near Longy, Wallis, Bewick and Barnsey. That's all I was saying is that its very hard to for 1 replicate a year like that again or 2, compare our current team when the above 4 mentioned were superstars for our club.

I would love to go 24 out of 25 again, in fact I still curse the Bulldogs and esspecially Chris Grant for kicking that goal in round 21 from the boundary to stop our streak, we should have gone 25 out of 25 that year!!

The darkest day in the EFC history setup up the year 2000, personally I dont want to have that happen again where we NEED something like that to spur us on.

What does any of this have to do with anything?

No-one's suggesting that we replicate the year. Just simply that we should be playing more like we can, as the team did in 2000 - that style of play. Like gPhonque said, to look back and learn.

Actually I'm in two minds about that, sure it was painful and wasteful, but you look back now, and wasn't it (partially) worth it? :) :( Maybe. 2000 surely was greater than 1999 could have been.

This is almost word for word the same sort of post that used to turn up on the North Board a couple of years ago, except replace "Sheedy" with "Pagan"

You guys will be OK, you just don't have the cattle to match it CONSISTENTLY with the best anymore.

Still good enough to beat anyone in one match, but not consistent enough to do it over a season
