Injuries??

According to The Worst, Brent Connelly had hip surgery a couple of weeks ago, is recovering well and should be available to play for Perth in another 2-3 weeks.

And Jay van Berlo is apparently another in a moon-boot with foot soreness. They (WP) are not sure if if is just a "hot-spot" or if it has developed into a stress fracture. They are hoping he will be available to play for the Joondies in Rd 3.

That's three rookies (de Boer, Pearce and VB) with hot-spots / stress fractures... does this seem like a bit of an issue??

i have developed a theory on this, and more than likely it is just absolute BS, but being on the rookie list, your spot is by no means secure in any way, you are scrapping with another 7 guys to get elevated and you need to do everything physically possible to get an edge, this may lead to some over-trainnig in the off season in a bid to impress the coaching staff..... just a theory and probably wrong, but the afl has had plenty of examples of players over training and ending up with stress fractures and soft tissue injuries.... the slimes michael braun was a classic for it.... Clancee pearce without having seen him train doesnt look like the sort who overtrains himself, but matt deboer looks a classic case of a guy who will train the house down and do lots of extra running and work, jay van berlo also strikes me as that sort of character.... if these boys have been doing their own work and running, which i would assume that they probably would, then maybe they are going a bit overboard with it.... just a theory

On Ch10 News Both Mayne & Balla's are out until at least Rnd 2. I would think both would probably have to play some WAFL before coming in.
I do think Balla's will get in pretty quickly, could sneak under a few teams. Mayne might come in as soon as he was fit enough though.

Is Mayne guaranteed a spot in the 22 when fit though?

I would think that Mayne will have to perform well in the WAFL over a month or so to get in. Last year he was one of very few young players, so he benefited from that. But with a heap of young guys pushing for selection (Hill, Suban, Broughton, Ballantyne, DeBoer) and the continued development of guys like Hinkley, Duffield and Campbell, he might have to fight it out in the WAFL for a bit.

If fit he would be in our best 22 straight away I imagine. But he'll need a few games for that.

Easily best 22. He is well ahead of DeBoer, Hinkley et al.

Not sure what games you were watching last year, but he was in our best a few times.

I realise he played very well last year, but what I'm saying is that I'm not sure he is a walk up start this year.

Who's to say Suban and Hill wont have similar years to Mayne's debut season? Will Ballantyne be picked ahead of him, due to being a specialist small forward? And while Mayne is injured, Hinkley and Duffield will be given chances to cement their spots.

He was very good in his games last year, but this year there will be even more young players competing against him. So he can't just be given a spot as soon as he is fit, he needs to earn it like everyone else.

But there are less old duds as well.

He was essentially playing McManus' role. Eventually, he'll be more in competition with Solaman than anyone.

Hard ball winners like Mayne don't grow on trees. None of our new guys bring to the table what Mayne does, in that manner.

He's more of a third forward/ high half forward/ hard ball winning forward in the same manner as ROK, than he is a small forward.

i agree with you chris, i think he is when in form and full fitness definetly best 22, but im not sure that he will walk straight into the line up, i would assume that he will have to show form in the wafl for a couple of weeks

Maynes will lack match fitness so will have at least 1 WAFL game IMO.
It more likely will depend on the policy Harvey and Co have on injured players as you can't have a rule for some and another for the rest.

It'd be great if the FFC website kept us in the loop of the injuries that out boys have etc, however I understand all the secrets too... OHHHH come on round one!!!:p

I's say Mayne will need at lest one if not a couple of WAFL matches, but will be starting 22 once he has a bit of match fitness. However, it is great that the kind of competitiveness Chris is talking about exists now. A real positive that lots of young guys will be pushing for spots.

I think Mayne should play a couple games in the WAFL but I rekon he will just play the one and get rushed back in quickly.

For someone like Mayne that doesn't bother me. You know he's one player who's never going to play like he's taking his spot for granted.

Don't worry about Subans should Silverscope, That was Just KickettPunchesRead pulling our legs, No reconstruction was neccesary and all is well with him:thumbsu:

He says it was due to an Essendon supporter asking about him for DT and being told numeous times to leave it to the DT thread but not complying. However, I still think there is an evil streak in him that gained some perverse pleasure out of turning some Purple pants brown in the process.

Ahead of Rd 1... this is what I can put together...

Out of action:

  • Mayne - ankle / foot issues - not available for a few weeks
  • Des - lower leg issues - not available for some time yet
  • Ballantyne - wrist - still a few weeks away
  • O'Brien - shoulder - a couple of weeks away
  • Campbell - knee - couple of weeks
  • Bucovaz - hip - long term injury
  • van Berlo (r) - can't remember - I just know he's not available for WP at the moment
  • Connelly (r) - hip - 6 weeks

Question marks:
  • McPharlin - achilles
  • Hayden - "sore" (did Ch10 say he also has an achilles issue?)
  • Foster - back
  • de Boer - hot spot
  • Browne - "niggles"
  • Pearce (r) - hot spot

Geez I hope the "question marks" get up alright sooner rather than later... that's quite an injury list. :(

Seems like a really big injury list for the start of the season. Do other teams have injury lists this long? Doesn't bode well going into the season with this so many out of action does it??

what's with all the achilles/lower leg injuries? Harvey said that it's because of the hard grounds at this time of year but I don't remember this being a problem before

We're probably doing a lot more miles than before.

I'm also not sure if we have a full time podiatrist down there either. It didn't sound like it last year. Makes a pretty big difference.

We havent been in a drought as severe as the one at the moment for a long time either.
Incorrect.

Been one of the wettest Summers we've had in quite a while.

Injury List Ahead of Round One

FREMANTLE
Hayden Ballantyne (wrist) test
Chris Mayne (ankle) 1-2 weeks
Des Headland (calf) 2-4 weeks

That doesn't look so bad... :thumbsu:

Not sure where Kiwi fits into that list - maybe he's ready to make a come back for WP this weekend...

There'll be some good WAFL action this weekend for those who miss out on Sunday. :)
