Adam Campbell has been cleared of damage to the knee he injured playing for West Perth last Saturday, but Roger Hayden faces a fitness test after a hamstring injury forced him out of the clash with the Bulldogs

Sandover medallist Hayden Ballantyne is expected to be sidelined until May as he recovers from wrist surgery. Chris Mayne’s comeback is still three weeks away while ruckman Brent Connelly’s hip injury will keep him out of action for another six weeks.

Good news for Adam Campbell, hopefully he will be in the purple in a couple of weeks time.

Bad news on Balla and Chopper though. Starting to look like we won't see either of them til halfway through the year.

Why the **** did they get Ballantynes wrist done?

It obviously wasn't a serious issue otherwise it would have been fixed in October by Peel. But instead we send him to a ****ing surgeon who obviously botched the operation and he looses half a season of footy for no reason.

Peel would have known at the end of last season that Ballantyne was going to get drafted though. So why would they fork the bill for surgery, when there was a chance that he might not have even played for them this year?

Roger Hayden (hamstring) test
Des Headland (calf) 2 weeks
Chris Mayne (ankle) 3 weeks
Hayden Ballantyne (wrist) 4 weeks
Ben Bucovaz (hip) 6 weeks
Brent Connelly (hip) 6 weeks

Good to see Bucovaz will be back sooner than expected, Headland, Mayne and Ballantyne clearly keep slipping though.

On 9 news tonight Pav was interviewed and asked directly whether he was injured, which he replied "categorically, NO". Good news.

Channel 7 news idiot interviewed Harves, of which the same question was asked and Harves said the same thing, no he was fully fit, also added that it may have been a case of the coaching staff moving him around on the field too much and not getting 'settled' in one positon.

Derrrr.

Oh come on, of course they're going to say that. He's got to be carrying something - you don't miss most of the pre-season if you're not.

What about Headland ??
His injury is obviously way worse than thought of !!

I don't know if anybody can clear this up, but I was under the impression that fundamentally his knee has a degenerative cartilage type problem. That could mean anything, but it generally means that it's bloody hard to get better (unlike soft tissue). I'm working on an assumption that Des is only a lowish chance of coming back to his best when he does actually make the field. A bit pessimistic, but it's happened many times before and his style of player is not the sort that can hide that sort of injury.

That means nothing, he wouldn't say if he was injured or not in any case (unless it was major thing that was actually going to keep him out for a while). Remember the end of last year when we were hardly playing for anything except a worse draft pick. Even then it was all a big surprise when he was forced to sit out.

PS for the record, I think he's OK, just a hunch. Next few weeks will reveal I suppose.

From memory, Des had 2 kneecaps on one side. He had 1 removed and then injured his calf late in his rehab - possibly by favouring the bad knee

Good news in that I saw Kiwi having shots for goal this morning - long and short range, in front and on an angle, off both legs. He had his knee strapped fairly heavily, but looked to be moving comfortably. He didn't miss many - he's a good set shot. :thumbsu:

That is good news I can't wait till we have Ballantyne, Mayne and Campbell back up forward.

The Doc is correct Papa.

It's known as Bi-partite patella, which is the separation of two parts of the knee cap, usually where the growth plates are meant to join.

The prognosis after surgery can be anywhere from perfectly normal to poor depending on the size of the 'breakaway' and other damage.

In almost all cases there is significant imbalance problems after surgery, and associated ongoing problems, depending on the issues already explained.

Unfortunately, you can't avoid surgery for it if it becomes symptomatic. The pain is usually almost identical to a fractured knee cap.

Is there anyone your aware of who has had the surgery while playing top level spot?
I don't know of anyone current off the top of my head that I could give you an example of, but yes, there definitely has been. It's a relatively unusual operation however.

Usually done before they get to top level though as well...

I'd also imagine kicking is not particularly helpful in recovery either.
