Injury Injury thread 2014/15

With our history of injury I've always thought it came down to 3 things Perths heat, the size of subi and the travel. But recently I get the feeling our management has been poor at times. Judd was never the same player after we managed his groin injury in 2007. Have we done the same to Naitanui

Update no. 2

Injured during preseason

Yeo (re-broken hand) - return to main group early next year

Selwood (ankle) - back in main group in next few weeks - apparently (source is BF I think) there have been complications with the ankle - second ankle injury, back training I think late January

Adamson - hamstring strain, back in the new year

Sinclair - broke his finger, shouldn't be out too long

Recovering from post-season surgery

Mackenzie (hip surgery) - return to main group early next year

Ellis (acromioclavicular joint) - return to main group early next year

Darling (foot stress fracture) - back running after Christmas

McGovern (hip) - back in new year I think

Waters (shoulder) - training with main group but out of contact work until Christmas - now doing light contact work

Rosa (peck & ankle) - peck surgery successful but minor ankle operation means he will be limited until Christmas - join main group in new year

Wellingham (knee/shin) - light program until Christmas - join main group in new year

Maginess (foot?) - was sighted in moonboot type thing in the first week of preseason training - uncertain

Other

Lamb - think he has some minor issues limiting his training

Recovered

Newman (minor ankle injury) - back and dominating

McGinnity (broken hand in WAFL GF) - pretty sure he is back?

Brown - he's back

Colledge - he's back

Sheppard - he's back

This would have to be the worst injury list we have had at the start of January in a long time. Does not bode well for the upcoming season

Going by todays training sessions photos Wellingham and Mcginnity are back in full training.

Scooter, Mcgovern & Darling are the ones that wont return for a few more weeks but not end of the world.

Yeo is doing everything bar skills.

Ellis i have heard is just being held back deliberately.

We haven't lost anyone for the entire season yet, and Naitanui has had a full preseason thus far, so I think it's a bit early to call that. But no injury is a good injury.

I don't understand why someone wouldn't simply be given a pre-season and come in 4-5 weeks late.

We hear so much about how that "12 week training block was critical"

So if they start training late-january. Give them 12 weeks and bring them in at the start of May. They miss a few rounds but then end up cherry ripe for the other 18.

Rather than struggle through underpaced all year - think Daisy Thomas

Because a game of footy is the best possible training and conditioning, so then the only question is, is Darling (for example) at 75% fitness better than the alternative. If the answer is yes, then play him, fitness staff take into account the work in the game in determining his training load. If the answer is no, then play the alternative. Playing a game of footy at less than 100% match fitness does not stop you getting fit, it actually helps, assuming you are over the injuries that kept you from training of course.

That seems to be the thinking at the club. IMO, it has lead us to a place where we have our players playing large chunks of the season well below their best, setting back their recovery and missing the following pre-season. Also, denying depth players the opportunity to either sink or swim and leading to deadwood sitting on our list too long.

Disagree with this. Thinking Judd, Naitanui, Waters among others playing injured and never fully recovering only to miss the following preseason. It just becomes a recurring cycle of players constantly missing pre seasons

If that is the case, why don't players who have missed pre-season come good after say 5-6 rounds as their fitness base grows?

Typically they don't and they struggle most of the year.

Because they are not just unfit, but still injured generally. Possibly they also just had a crap year. My point about not having to wait until full fitness does not apply to every player or every position, it also depends on who else is available to do the job.

Yes, playing injured is not the same as playing lacking fitness because injury caused you to miss conditioning in the pre season, which was the point I was replying to.

When u play unfit it just makes it more likely you are going to get injured. You fatigue earlier and put more stress on your body and you are going to get hit harder. then the week is spent trying to recover from the bumps and crashes from the game. Not to mention the mental toll of playing below your best and losing all confidence

Saw Ellis just before Christmas, his shoulder was still pretty ****ed. Hadn't done anything weights wise.

I seem to remember (correctly or incorrectly) that Ellis was being talked up as coming in to the side if we made the finals, so I would have thought he would be right by now

Definitely isn't.

That list is depressing. Depending on who you consider 'best 22' I make it 8 or 9 that have had or are still having compromised preseasons. The ones that are most significant are the big guys, EMac, Gov and Darls. You want to have as many as possible of your spine at full capacity. Mids/smalls can be shuffled around to a certain extent. I guess one possible positive is that the NAB Challenge will offer the chance for a few youngsters/fringies to grab a spot.

It's not good.

Mackenzie is back in full training.

If Darling and McGovern were both injured then it would be between Sinclair or McInnes for the second KPF spot, a big drop off in talent.
