Is it time to really start worrying if we bought a lemon in McGovern.. I am just not convinced he is any good.. Looks a poor mans Levi Casbout.. and right now I would have Levi and Kennedy well ahead of him if I was picking a side.. and this is before Harry and Charlie return.

Inclined to agree. Setterfield also.
Setterfield has something, just needs to improve his decision making.. Paddy Doe is the one I am really concerned with.. has a Jimmy Toumpas type smell about him, has been given games he has not earnt based on draft position and just continues to underwhelm

Dow done some good stuff today , build his tank and fitness with a good pre season and he'll be right imo.. still Only a pup .

Dow just is not a mid -too small-and we over reached to get him. The combo of undersized players: dow, fisher, gibbons. added betts, murphy, simpson makes us too light over the ball
He's 6'2 and 83kgs.

Not small at all.

Wait till he is 23. Will be a solid lad.

He did some good things tonight. Will keep getting better.

He would want to get his arse into gear this year.

Done well transforming the body. He needs to translate it to on field form though.

Only now......

The kid will be a bloody gun. If people don’t see that in the bits he does, then there is no use explaining it to them. Just let it evolve. Setterfield, Fisher, O’Brien as well.......

Midfield was deplorable, small forwards aren't the issue

Have backed in McGovern but he was soft

Setters is a mystery at the moment

Walsh is trying to do too much and is stifling ball movement

You will never win a game when you are down in tackles, inside 50"s and centre clearances

To be honest with you all I skipped frequently between the game and the Aussie Women's T20 final. Partner isn't into footy much but is a staunch feminist (good, my mother was a strong one, she'd approve of her!) so getting her to watch the cricket was awesome. I watched a replay of the game to collect my thoughts.

McGovern will be fine in a strong side if we ever get a strong side. Not a coincidence his best year came when the Crows were absolutely firing nor the fact that he was one of the first to run away with his tail between his legs when they fell apart. He will never, ever, be the one who leads from the front. There's no doubt in my mind that SOS understood this when recruiting him and brought him in as the cream to Charlie and Harry. IF (not when) those lads can get on the park consistently and fire you'll see McGovern return to being a 40-goal a year forward.

Setters is in desperate need of some bloody coaching. So are half the lads in the team. Walsh is having the same issues. They don't know what day it is right now. Plain as ****ing day. Was it Barker who was given the mids this season? ****ing deplorable whatever way you slice it. Another of Setters issues is the same as what Weitering went through a couple of years ago. He needs a consistent responsibility week in, week out and given the opportunity to execute that. Is he supposed to be a forward? half forward? mid? It's too much. Pick his best role and let him flourish in it.

As for the team...

I've worked in sports long enough to know that preseason isn't everything. I've worked for successful teams (other sports) who have had shit results in the preseason. One of those teams had two wins from eight games with four blowout losses and the other two not being as close as the scoreline suggested. They ended up winning the championship that season.

The difference with those teams? You could clearly see the result wasn't the important thing rather the learning of structures, systems, additions to the playbook, etc. were.

I don't see any of that with this Carlton side. I see a team that is confused and that has, if anything, gone backwards in regards to critical thinking, game planning, strategising, working their way out of issues. Last week it was all about how we'd gone back to Bolton's game plan. I saw some of that again this week.

The midfield was mediocre last season beyond its top end. This year it certainly appears that they'd accept mediocrity. They have no idea how to move the ball when they've got it and they're even worse at moving without the ball when the opposition has it. These are the things you look for in the preseason -- that those teams that I've been involved with demonstrated even if the immediacy of results wasn't what fans would have liked.

In this regard all ball sports are the same to a certain degree. In my opinion the most important skill is movement without the ball. Getting to the right spots. Building trust that you can get to the spots that you need to and your teammates will get to theirs. You don't need speed and quickness of body here although it helps. Where you need it is in the mind. This team is fundamentally slow minded. There's no switch that you can flick from off to on between preseason and the real stuff.

The positive that I can see? I can see why people have said that they've improved on the track. They do look bigger and stronger than last year. Still mostly undersized as a midfield unit (strictly my opinion) compared to the majority of teams running around but I can see what Andy Russell's been doing with them. We're not going to be boys among men this year to the extent we've been in the past.

However, to be honest with you, this isn't the area that I felt that we required the most work with but was something to look forward to as a bonus to improved, fundamentals. Look at our games last year and look at how many times we ran games out significantly better than our opposition. The weeks that we failed in this endeavor were largely because we lacked fundamental skills and the opposition made us pay again and again with our sloppy execution compared to their well tuned ability. Otherwise, we ran over the top of the vast majority of teams that we faced. I believe we'll continue doing this this year. This is Andy Russell and we knew what we were getting from him.

We can run. and jump. and do all sorts of great things physically. But until we build a team that can execute under duress - and consistently when we're not - we're simply a team of headless chooks.

My opinion is that the head coach is the team's primary motivator. Teague's a real beauty when it comes to this and for that I believe in him. I don't think he's the primary issue here at all. It's the assistant coaches who are responsible for the drilling down into their team units (midfield, forwards, backs, etc.) and setting them up for success. That's where I see our biggest weakness currently. There's a severe lack of the right coaching going on and it shows in game.

Whoever is responsible for that farcical midfield needs to have their head read. I truly believe that the fundamentals aren't being coached correctly. The basics need to be taught better and the game plan for each mid needs to be simplified. The current set up sees our elite mids (e.g. Walsh) trying to over-execute when they should be encouraged to keep it simple and play their natural games.

I can see the opening months of the season going pearshaped. Please prove me wrong Blues.

You can not be considered a midfielder if you can not get your hands on the pill 25 times a game regularly. He is in his 3rd pre season and I am still hearing excuses that he is young, give him time etc the time is now.. if you can not establish yourself as an AFL quality player in your 3rd season I am afraid you never will.

Adding to that, his hands are bloody soft. Has great touch.

Unfortunately, and this is with every supporter base, the natives get restless.
A lot of these “natives” aren’t sighted when we are winning games, which hasn’t been the case lately. Once we start winning games, there’ll be less to complain about, and they’ll slink off into the shadows and complain about something else.

Misery loves company, and I’m not fond of miserable pricks.

so he's finished......

if he does not come good this season then yes, he might grind out an AFL career but unless we see a massive upswing in output then he will never be the player we had hoped when we drafted him with pick 3, a head of Adam Cerra and Jaidyn Stephenson..
