I don't understand how there's still debate over LDU. The lads clearly seem to know that leadership involves more than just being one of the team's best players. Everything I've seen about him suggests he's the quiet type and that he's just happy to go about his business. Which is ****ing fantastic for us, as it means everything's in place for him to elevate his game this year with minimal distraction

I was surprised that the leadership voting was as transparent as it was. I had actually expected a secret ballot. I suspect that some players might vote the PC way when they have to announce to the group who their votes are going to when that may not always be their preferred choice. The final result is unlikely to be significantly affected by it, but I'd probably prefer the secret ballot.
This was my initial thought also

You’ve summed it up in more detail for me

Ultimately not a big deal but I don’t really like the every player announce who you want as skipper in front of the group

For instance those 6 blokes who didn’t vote lmac or jy that’s not ideal that it’s out in the open amongst the team

Open seems to be the new mantra. All in.

It may seem awkward for the players who voted differently but that will be short lived. Jye and LMac will now work harder to prove to them why they’re the leaders.

It’s deliberate and will bring them all closer.

I expect that it's all part of Leading Teams philosophy and we will see more of this open and honest feedback policy in the next episodes.

Awesome! Very appreciative of this kind of content and it does work in making me feel more a part of the club as a supporter.

Just regarding comments on the open voting process, I would be surprised if they did read out their own votes publically. My guess is that the ballots were redistributed after being filled out and players were reading out somebody else’s votes.

He was actually pretty silent throughout it all (or at least what was shown on camera) but it really reminds you how far Ben McKay has come - a few years ago he was a kid who walked away from rep football because he didn’t think he was good enough and didn’t want the pressure, now he is leading an AFL club as one of the top key defenders playing the game. Fantastic growth for him.

Seems like having Ben McKay in the leadership is a sign that the club are confident of keeping him...

Not necessarily.

Players have been in the leadership group & delisted at the end of the season.
Macmillan & Pittard two recent examples.

I hope you’re right in that we’re confident, but I’ll be feeling nervous right until he signs that contract.

I wonder if the players would vote for a guy that they think would walk? Or they don’t think that far ahead?

Latter imo. I doubt any/many of them are loyal to the club to that degree.

Wouldn't be surprised if players are encouraged to spread their votes across the positional lines too and this brings defenders like Corr and McKay into the mix. Otherwise you could end up with a Brownlowesque midfield heavy leadership group.

While Cunners isn’t the skipper you can tell he is the spiritual leader of this club and man it’s good to see him healthy and happy. Could he possibly be the most “north” bloke ever? He’d have to be in the top handful imo.

Imagine getting the “I’m proud of you mate”, from Ben Cunnington…would nearly be as big of a compliment as being named captain 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Heir to the ’Shinboner of the (next) Century’ 👑?

If he hangs around long enough for a premiership - lock him in.

We make fun of Brad for setting upmkids financially and all that... But this is definitely part of it all. Developing kids into good citizens. They don't go the usual route of work or uni or both... There's a lot of responsibility on clubs to look after these young men. Ben is going great guns.

Good idea, the fans need to be along for the ride and hopefully this helps build the connection with the fans.
It's not easy to do these videos imo. If you put too much gameplan/tactical stuff in, other teams analyse it. If you include coaches private discussions on players that can go sideways if the players haven't been told something similar.
Would be cool to see something similar to what OKC does with their "The Path" series where they recap like 4-5 games and follow some of the players stories, mixed in with some game highlights and coaches media comments etc. Admittedly, it might be a little easier though in the NBA given the travel time on planes to edit things, the size of media staff and budgets they have as well lol.

Not sure I see the correlation between Brad's WIFM teachings vs footballers doing work or uni in their non-football time vs Ben McKay being in the leadership group mate?
