List Mgmt. Ins and outs - mid year review

With the upcoming mid-season draft, this has the potential to further increase the competition for spots.

The players we’re looking to replace on the LTI list (Reef and HH) aren’t exactly players who we need to replace in the best 22, so we can use the picks to recruit for the long term.

But any players who we pick up will increase the number of players we need to offload at the end of the year.

Number of list changes historically under the McRae regime:

2024: 8 changes = 4 delistings + 2 retirements + 2 trades
2023: 8 changes = 6 delistings + 0 retirements + 2 trades
2022: 10 changes = 7 delistings + 1 retirement + 2 trades

Fun fact: Jordan Roughead is the only player who has chosen to retire under McRae. The other 2 were medically retired.

Looking forward to 2025, list below of the uncontracted players, IMO likelihood of not playing on for Collingwood:

Very Likely:
(R) Johnson

Likely:
Mitchell (he’s missed a lot of football, and is being amply replaced by Long … but is a proud player and things can change)
(R) Markov (handy and flexible backup, but teams can’t usually justify having a senior player on the list playing so few games)
(R) Dean (not getting games)
Macrae (5th year on the list and still yet to show consistent senior football. Let’s see how he goes after he returns from injury)

Possible:
(R) Sullivan (solid midfield backup, rookie spot saves him)
Cox (not in his best form, but also a difficult player to replace)
WHE (a down few weeks, but is versatile and generally solid)

Unlikely:
Mihocek (uncontracted, log jam of tall forwards now, down on his usual output)
Maynard (hopefully re-signs)
Smit (part of our future)
Steene (part of our future)
Pendlebury (playing well)
Howe (was looking old and tired a month ago, but has been solid the last few weeks - yet to be replaced)

No chance:
Elliott (leading goal kicker and not showing any signs of slowing down at all, loving his football)
Frampton (playing very well, durable, versatile - can play in ruck, not a lot of other options)
Sidebottom (playing well)
(RB) Parker (not really taking up a list spot yet)

Very Likely: AJ, McCrae
Likely: Mitchell (happy to wait till the end of the year but he will have to fight Long for his spot),
Trades: Steene, Ryan, possibly Allan and Cameron. Clubs will be interested in all 4. (NB. I'm not proposing to trade anyone other than Ryan UNLESS the trades really suit CFC) I'd keep Markov and Jiath over Ryan any day. If Steene were traded then Cox must be persisted with.

Sullivan should be kept over McCrae and Demattia. Harrison and McGuinness's injuries further tighten the list.

Ryan is having an excellent season

I wouldn't want to see Steene go, I think he is just coming good.
Can't get rid of Steene in my opinion. He's only 21 and we don't exactly have amazing ruck depth, especially when Cox retires. Give 200cm ruckman time to develop.

Why would you consider trading Steene?
I'd only consider trading him IF the deal was too good to refuse. Knowing that Adelaide (and Port) really need young agile rucks and he's a SA boy, if they offered a late first or 2 seconds then that'd help with all our NGA's this year and we'd still have Cameron and Cox and Smit (and McCarthy) as backups (and could probably bring in a mature age ruck if need be.
Personally I like Steene and see him eventually replacing Cameron, IF the deals were too good to refuse he WOULD have value.

Yep he's improved. But does he seriously lay claim to any of our defender's spots (and does he give us anything more than Markov does now or for that matter Jiath or Parker?)
Due to his young age and the fact that he has improved this year, I'd keep Ryan over Markov

He’s holding the backline together tbh. His trade value v scope for improvement isn’t worth it IMO. He needed a big season and is having one. Maynard was much maligned early on

I guess we’ll get an indication this week - who comes in for Maynard, Markov, Ryan, or somebody else?

Do you think he has any trade value?

Question mark about whether he projects as either an adequate ruck or key forward. Doesn’t seem to be quite up to either. If he is going to make it it will be some years down the road. We currently have two highly speculative ruck prospects who haven’t shown that much progress. If they don’t progress by the end of the year I expect the recruiting team will be looking at the options and both will be lucky to get another year.

You might be right. We are running out of a decent back up ruck. I think Steene and Smit will have to show more for the remainder of the year

Good summary,
The only 2 I doubt the rating is Smit and Steene - not showing much improvement so far.
I also think that Macrae is very likely.

Very Likey:
Macrae

Likely:
Johnson
Dean
One of Steene/Smit

Possible:
Cox
Markov
Mitchell
WHE (fa)
Sullivan (trade)
Both of Steene/Smit
Allan (trade)
Ryan (trade)

Less possible:
Quaynor (trade)
McCreery (trade)
De Goey (trade)
Lipniski (trade)

Even less possible:
Cameron (trade)
Maynard (fa)

In recent times it looks to be 7-8 list changes

Delisted: Johnson, Macrae, Dean,

Retire/delisted: Cox, Markov

Retire: Mitchell

It would surprise me if any of Howe, WHE, Sidebottom, Pendlebury retire if form seriously wanes or a premiership win sees them retire on a high

Trade/FA:
Maynard?
De Goey?
Cameron or Allan?

Maynard may still take the mega offer… nothing certain until he is re-signed

Alternativly the club may trade a player of value on a good wage like de Goey… in order to free up cap and/or bring in picks… perhaps knowing that his body is increasingly struggling with AFL demands

Seems a long shot but Grundy and ginnivan being traded seemed unlikely until they happened

The other scenario is one where the eagles make a play for Cameron or a young WA talent like Allan and like noble/richards… he takes the offer

I think we'll replace Maynard from within. No real need to bring in anyone for his role. Could even be someone like WHE.
