Brownlow Medallist
With the upcoming mid-season draft, this has the potential to further increase the competition for spots.
The players we’re looking to replace on the LTI list (Reef and HH) aren’t exactly players who we need to replace in the best 22, so we can use the picks to recruit for the long term.
But any players who we pick up will increase the number of players we need to offload at the end of the year.
Number of list changes historically under the McRae regime:
2024: 8 changes = 4 delistings + 2 retirements + 2 trades
2023: 8 changes = 6 delistings + 0 retirements + 2 trades
2022: 10 changes = 7 delistings + 1 retirement + 2 trades
Fun fact: Jordan Roughead
is the only player who has chosen to retire under McRae. The other 2 were medically retired.
Looking forward to 2025, list below of the uncontracted players, IMO likelihood of not playing on for Collingwood:
Very Likely:
(R) Johnson
Likely:
Mitchell (he’s missed a lot of football, and is being amply replaced by Long … but is a proud player and things can change)
(R) Markov (handy and flexible backup, but teams can’t usually justify having a senior player on the list playing so few games)
(R) Dean (not getting games)
Macrae (5th year on the list and still yet to show consistent senior football. Let’s see how he goes after he returns from injury)
Possible:
(R) Sullivan (solid midfield backup, rookie spot saves him)
Cox (not in his best form, but also a difficult player to replace)
WHE (a down few weeks, but is versatile and generally solid)
Unlikely:
Mihocek (uncontracted, log jam of tall forwards now, down on his usual output)
Maynard (hopefully re-signs)
Smit (part of our future)
Steene (part of our future)
Pendlebury (playing well)
Howe (was looking old and tired a month ago, but has been solid the last few weeks - yet to be replaced)
No chance:
Elliott (leading goal kicker and not showing any signs of slowing down at all, loving his football)
Frampton (playing very well, durable, versatile - can play in ruck, not a lot of other options)
Sidebottom (playing well)
(RB) Parker (not really taking up a list spot yet)
