I thought Mattner looked promising in his first season for us but lost his way last year. Lets give him a chance. I haven't given up on this guy just yet.

That would be disasterous - he's too slow. I still have visions of him trudging along behind both Crawford and Woewoedin last year as they racked up possession after possession.

He's just not a defensive player. At a centre bounce Woey would be standing on the edge of the square and Mattner would be ten metres away. Although the coaching staff didn't seem to notice...
Got cut up by Brent Harvey last year in round 6 as well.

Hope not.

Last year Woewodin took him to cleaners and Shaun Burgoyne gave him a bath in the showdown.

I get the feeling it might be Shaun Burgoyne and can I say right now that I don't like that match up. If Shaun is anywhere near fit he will tear Mattner a new one.:(

Didn't Shirley play on S.Burgoyne last year and get cut up? Surely they learnt from that match up, if Shirley can't stop him, what in the hell makes them think Mattner will be able to get near him?

Mattner played on Shaun in the first showdown last year and Shirley in the 2nd. Both got creamed.

Judging by the way Montgomery normally played him whoever wants to be totally unaccountable.

Round 22 last year those two blokes would just go in completely opposite directions before the ball was even in play.

So good to see Matner get an opportunity:)
As I have said, he has very unfairly been derided - Hope he isn't played as a tagger, but on wing, or HBF.
And he is not slow!

His decision making and ball use make Brett Burton look like a mega star that never wastes a possesion.

He has a crack at it and is excellent with 1%ers but he has no skill. And I agree he is not slow he actually has quite a bit of pace.

I'm not a Mattner fan, but I'm not upset with his inclusion given that Welsh replaces Stevens, and Mattner is in the side to take the place of Burns.

Given Burn's poor efforts last week in what is likely to be his last game in the tri-colours, then we're definitely no worse off. At least Mattner will go in fearlessly for the footy and is a terrific tackler.

Could it just be possible that Mattner might be in the side to have a stint on a wing with Burton going to FF at some stage of the game??

As for the interchange, if we wanted a defender then surely that could have been Smart, Stenglein if it was a mid-fielder, and Schuback if it was a forward.

Maybe he's there for a genuine reason.

He certainly isn't slow. He has genuine pace..

Unfortunately the criticism of Mattner relates to a couple of extremely poor tagging efforts by him that possibly cost us games. Perhaps the criticism should be directed at those that cast him in such unsuitable roles.

I see his best role as a wingman, and hope that's where he gets played if he gets the chance. He might well surprise everybody if that is the case.

Now stiffy you know I value your opinion:eek:

However i have now watched the Geelong game 3 times, and for the life of me, can't see where Burton was "burning"the ball.
Apart from the times I fell asleep during the game, he was consistently hitting targets and positioning the ball to the correct position.

I think you will need to re-think your views on Burtons last game, or perhaps there was too much steam coming out of your head, which may have clouded your vision of the game;)

Haven't they played him mainly at HB for Sturt?
Perhaps they'll bring Begley to a wing, and put Matner in Begleys BP position?

I would much rather have schuback in the side than Mattner but if its between Mattner and Burns then I would take Mattner.

I hope you are right and Burton plays at FF. This might give us half a chance.

Its interesting that we have this youth policy going on at the moment yet we are not playing players that the club has been raving on about. Reilly is injured, Schuback is not getting games for the Crows.

The bottom line is I want Schuback in the side.

Mattner is OK either on a wing or HBF. Begley is a better offensive player out of the 2, so agrre that perhaps Marty has been selected to backfill Begley's spot, so then Burton can go up forward. Not really surprised Matner has been selected as he has been in good SANFL form. Just hope he is not given a tagging job on say a Kane Cornes - leave that to Stinger.

Bock is lucky & would have thought Schuey was more deserving.

Actually Mattner usually plays as a wingman for Sturt and sometimes as a HBF.

Begley has been terrific in matching up on small forwards and matches up on them better than Mattner. I would like to see Jericho and Johncock as wingmen.
