A lot gets made about our midfield and contested ball stats when we are in form slumps, particularly that this hurts our inside 50 differential in games and makes us non-competitive.

Not to say our midfield isn’t entirely underperforming, but when you look at it more closely i think our two bigger issues since the start of 2020 are:

1) Our ball movement from D50 to F50. In 2021, we are ranked 18th for scores from D50 to F50

2) Our forward 50 pressure. In 2021, we are ranked 18th for inside 50 tackles.

Surprisingly we are actually ranked in the top half for clearance differential (thanks Nic Nat).

I think it is these two issues in particular that are really hurting our supply, as we can’t keep it in our F50 when we do get it in, and when our opponent does they tend to get a lot of repeat entries due to our poor ball movement out of defence.

While individual players may not be the sole cause of these 2 issues, I think we undersell the influences of jetta and rioli in 2018-19.

I think we still have the ability in 2021 to improve these issues by at least doing the following:

1) In regards to F50 pressure, we need to give up on the two ruck structure and even extra tall fwd. Play JK, JD and Allen only, and surround the forward line with tackling pressure forwards as best we can. Hopefully rioli comes back at least 80% of what he was

2) In regards to D50 transition, despite his poor game on the weekend Witherden should be persisted with. We need more pace as well, so I think we need to be creative and play a Yeo or even a Tim Kelly off HB now most of our mids are back.

Just my 2 cents

I think Dylan is right when he says it's our defensive structure that is the problem. We play a static defense that doesn't push up the ground enough. Slows our transition and doesn't press hard enough to lock it into forward 50.

I’m still upset at the way Jetta was shunted last year. He was a required player this season (and last) but not treated as such. He hasn’t been properly replaced down back and Ben Johnson is probably the only player in the squad that can offer any semblance of what he did. We need to focus on pace around the ground going forward.

Our transition out of kick ins is a disgrace same play everytime. Long ball down the line to the half back/wing area. Or a chip into the pocket which ends up in the same area half back/wing. Teams know this and set up for it, they are happy for this to occur knowing that our midfield is soft and they back there mids to win it and drive it back in to there forwards.

And when we do win it there set up down the line knowing the only way we deliver the ball inside 50 is deep and into a pocket for our big forwards to fly. Again oppo teams know this and set up for a bunch of blokes to fly spoil it, bring it to ground where they turn it over and away they go.

Also I can't believe I'm writing this but Hutchings has to come back in to the side as a tagger. Gun players on oppo sides just have a field day against us. He is a proven shut down player and can accumulate the footy as well.

I expect BJ's to be coached out of it. Rotham is no where as quick but similair traits to BJ when drafted and now he has no confidence to even take the game on in the slightest of ways.
