Analysis Inside 50s into goals

Georgiy, Rioli, Byrne Jones are ok. We really don’t have much else to kick to. Collingwood has been mentioned as having an ok forward line but to me Hill, Elliot, De Goey, McCreery, Hoskin-Elliot + Mihochek, Memburey & McStay are more than ok and bat deep.

Schulz was our last great tall forward. We have failed miserably in attaining great forwards since then. I reckon we need a clean out and a reset.

Those Collingwood guys are goal kicking forwards.
That’s the big difference, we go for players to lock it in up forward.
As I’ve said a million times before forwards that don’t kick goals ain’t worth shit.

I’m basically saying besides Georgiadis, Dbj and Rioli we ain’t got much. Hence we aren’t getting value for all our entries.

At least Josh Carr recognises there's an issue. That's a start!

"there's obviously moments in the game that we thought we could have been better at and, I guess defended a little bit better, and in all facets of a game, so not just defence, but obviously moving the ball inside 50"

"And we weren't able to connect inside 50 at that time, and unfortunately, we didn't get the four points."

Much better than "I wouldn't change a thing".

I’m sure this has already been highlighted elsewhere, but I’ve heard that under 13 years of Ken, we have only once had a higher league season ranking for goals scored than for inside 50’s. Yet in the 13 years preceding Ken, we have only once had a lower league season ranking for goals scored than for inside 50’s.

Forgot to put this in here on the weekend, Adam Simpson had an interesting way to describe our inside 50's under Hinkley on his regular Thursday gig with Whateley on SEN. They were previewing the Port v Carlton game last Thursday night. I enjoyed the analogy/metaphor.

Port Adelaide you know, I'm comparing them from this year to last year, and its just a different side. Their identity used to be front half, front half, get it in, supply. We're Hungry Jacks just get as much as you can down your throat. We're not a fine dining restaurant, we're not quality, we're quantity, and now they've turned into fine dining (laughs) they don't go in too often.

Time in front half they've gone from 2nd to 12th.
I just think they're a bit lost this year and may be it's a bit like Coxy's first half of the season, where they're trying to change some things and it hasn't quiet worked.

My last piece on Port is the've lost players too, availability too. Horne-Francis going out, it disrupted them too much because they like to be a dominate mid field group and they don't have the personnel of late. Their ruck situation is difficult as well. They're missing a really really good ruck in their personnel, so yeah they've been up and down. Its going to be interesting to watch tonight...........… Port have gone from 4th to 12th in clearances and that's from last year to this year.

I think Simmo over played our injuries - to mid field players. He is right our ruck performance has been a lot bigger issue this year than the last few years. Lycett ****ed up a couple of finals but he and Ladhams supported by Charlie gave us a decent ruck advantage between 2020 and 2023 and Sweet was pretty good last year.

We started the season the first 4 or 5 games with some major injuries, mainly KPP's - Marshall, BZT, Esava, Lukosius and Lord. Butters missed the first 3 games. JHF missed the Freo and GWS games with a hammy but hasn't been in the best form in the last 3 games since he came back. Wines has missed the last 2 games and only played a quater in the Rd 6 game v Sydney with his heart issues.

I have a feeling in the long run we will be far better off adopting this current game plan than the previous one which just didn’t stand up in finals.

Being reliant on midfield dominance and forward half dominance means you become one dimensional, a criticism that has been synonymous with Hinkleys coaching and viewed as him having no plan b or back up strategies.

The ability to win games in different ways is what I believe makes a successful team reach the pinnacle.

The problem with injuries isn't how many you have (although if you have too many it becomes a problem), its who they are. If it was Burton, Mead and Richards out its different to Butters, Horne-Francis and some talls. Its not a coincidence that Sydney's bad run is while they've had Guilden out and Warner hasn't been in great form.

We found more leads inside 50 which was really pleasing but we also got over the top and kicked a few uncontested from the goalsquare, something that was vanishingly rare over the last 5-8 years.

Your goal kicking accuracy looks great if you generare a lot of high percentage scoring chances.

Carr said to expect more of those type of goals. Not pushing everyone into the D50 helps.

Zadow's hard work to get the ball over the top to JHF was brilliant.

Kenny can't kick it for em though m8

The style we played was incredibly similar to Kens early days. Clear out the forward line. Fast, direct, corridor football. Kick to a leading KPF. Was reminiscent of watching Polec, White, Wingard et al bolt with the ball and kick to a leading Schulz.

There wasn't a lot of resistance so I guess we'll see how it works against better teams, but the core style was really impressive.
