Watching it now, Julian, Warne, Border & Fleming are looking after their old mates, advocating only Hughes and Starc to be dropped from the side.

The under-performing club ofPunter, Hussey and Haddin (for some inexplicable reason in his case) seem to be looked after by the whole cricket establishment.

You feel Punter could average 10 for a decade with his career average down to 31 before some of these people would want him out of the side.

Now if these guys get picked for Boxing Day I hope they succeed, but we need to be realistic here. These guys have failed consistently over the past 2 years, more often than not.

Border said he believed one of the veterans will get the axe for Boxing Day. My pick Hussey.

They may do it the softly softly way. Dan Christian will come in, make Huss 12th man.

The sensitive axing 'horses for courses'.

Whoever survives (and I guess like you it will be Punter), they should be put on notice that if the don't perform in Boxing Day thats it. No 2nd chances, no excuses, no career saving 55's. Make a big score in convincing fashion (not a Boony 1995 style century) otherwise you will be on a motorcade at the SCG in the new year.

I agree. If they aren't going to announce their retirement at the end of a series or a particular test, then they have to go back to shield cricket to find form like every other batsmen. They can't have it both ways.

Sure Ponting's 2 dismissals in Hobart looked clumsy but at least he helped win the 2nd test against Sth Africa and made a 78 to set up the win at the Gabba when we were 2/25. Hussey has failed in his last 7 knocks with only 83 runs and just looks apprehensive each time he's batted lately.

You do know that Border never played with Ponting, and Julian played only one test with him. Fleming only played 14 tests with Ponting.

Warne played 16 tests with Hussey. He played 129 without him. None of the others played with Hussey.

None of them played with Haddin.

It's hardly the 'Old Boys network'.

FWIW, I have been calling for Ponting to be dropped for more than a year now, and I have been unimpressed with Starc. Haddin is probably still just holding his spot. Hussey - ehhh - tough call. MOM three tests running in Sri Lanka 3 months ago......................

I am aware of all those facts, but they are all part of the cricketing fraternity, and for whatever reason Haddin is seen as some champion who needs to be given leeway when not going well.

Julian and Fleming are contemporaries of Punter, and played lots of ODI's together and would be reluctant to pass judgement considering Punter has achieved more than both of those guys combined.

Because Punter has achieved almost more than anyone who has played for Australia, even AB is reluctant to pass judgement.

No shield until February.

Will test players be available for any big bash matches? If so maybe Punter will claim he is back in form due to a quick fire 35 of 28 balls, after scoring 19 and 8 in the boxing day test.

this is an extremely interesting and intriguing time in australian cricket...for the first time in a number of years we are right back in the pack, we now remember what it feels like for a struggling nation to find the right team.

failing batsmen, innaccurate bowling, batting collapses...im loving cricket at the moment !

Firstly, love Inside Cricket, great show. :thumbsu:

The first bloke I drop is Hughes. He'll be back, I'm certainly not writing him off forever, but let him go back to domestic cricket to get his confidence back. He is mentally shot, and we're doing him a disservice playing him.

The second bloke I drop is Haddin, because unlike the batting, there is a clear replacement in Matthew Wade. Wade’s only 24, is having a sensational season so far and his FC average is 40. He’s ready to go and this is one change that could be made quite easily.

Ponting and Hussey get the Boxing Day test.

I'm happy with them getting BD, but they must be told that if they don't perform, its cya later

They have both been greats of Aussie cricket, so they deserve some respect. Give them a farewell (early announcement) and let them say their goodbyes to the public
