I dont know about picking up too many WAFL mature agers.

We already have clark and west.

Florenca seems like a short term solution...however it makes sense if we were to move on redden and shuey at the end of the year
It's a decent chance to see if any of these players are able to contribute in the AFL without much consequence. I mean, Florenca's 25. It puts him in the same age range as Duggan, Cole, Rotham, SPS, and Langdon who mostly haven't locked in a spot in the side.

We've got a large amount of the squad in that 23 - 26 age range, and none of them are real superstars let alone there being enough to deny someone performing highly at the lower level a chance.

Too late for Tasmania now methinks.

They want their own side.
Yep think you're right but NM to Tas would make a lot of sense. Of course they wouldn't want to go. Like South Melbourne didn't want to go to Sydney; and Fitzroy didn't want to go to Brisbane.

The only other issue with Tas - that seems to be ignored - is how do you fixture 19 teams (until the NT come in)? I guess WCE gets the bye week one and Rich gets it in the final round.

Pay the Roos $10m to piss off to the VFL and give Tassie a side.

Keep it at 18 teams, Tassie gets to forge their own team and not have it be sloppy seconds from Arden St.

I mean ideally it should be Tas instead of the Gold Coast but the AFL has made that bed and they're determined to live in it.

And before I get @'d about why my barely considered hot take is wrong, keep in mind it is a barely considered wrong hot take.

Id like North to merge with someone.

Part of me would love to see the Fremantle KangarooDockers, but I think the AFL should consider merging North with Gold Coast.

I think there are Kangaroos in QLD so this works.

Gold Coast Kangaroos

Sounds good - this isnt the ******* NBA, why have a team called the Suns?

Just have 19/20 teams. What happened to Fitzroy was an absolute disgrace and the fact people think the same should happen to North despite North being in a much, much better situation is astounding
I'm not so opposed to the AFL expanding further but for the love of god split into conferences so that we can at least have a fair home & away season before the finals. It doesn't even have to be same teams in each conference every year. The current system is awful and won't get any better with further expansion.

20 sides. 20 rounds. Everyone has a local rival they play twice every year (Vic teams can pair off - Carl/Rich, Ess/Coll, Geel/Haw etc, two new sides can play each other). The other 18 teams you play once a season. If you play them away this year you get to host them next year.

Would mean a 200 game season, up from 198 under the current setup, so broadcasters get slightly more content and teams get an extra bye or two during the year. And they maintain all the marquee games.

Too easy.

Whos the 20th team? surely another WA team.

Lucky Gil is going or it could have been a Chinese team.

Or even better, we keep it at 22 so I don't need to socialise and that sort of crap an extra two weeks a year.

While your maths works I’m not convinced further diluting the product is something I’m looking forward to.

Fine if they want to do that, we know they will. Playing everybody once, or once plus a rival, is not equitable though because of the nature of home and away games.

For example, playing all the good teams at home and the bad teams away is not the same as the other way. The only way to have an honest to goodness fair fixture that can't be made much fairer is to have an even home and away comp. What better time to address that than when expanding? It's the model implemented by the overwhelming majority of league sports across the world for a reason.

Now you seem like an argumentative chap and probably have your counterpoint ready to go here but it's wasted on me - as far as AFL opinions go this is a hill I'll die on.

My biggest issue with expansion is that the talent pool is already spread so thin among 18 clubs. Let alone a 19th or 20th.

I’m all for preserving long standing clubs, but the elite level should be just that, the best of the best, and if some clubs can’t compete at that level they can either drop out into lower level comps where their history can be preserved, or wound up entirely.

4 Vic clubs need to go, add an NT and TAS team to get us back to 16. 22 round season plus finals (everyone plays each other once, plus room for double ups against local sides & marquee games etc), and SOO as a pre-season fixture.
