Not Eagles related, but this is the rare modern article where someone has sat back, had a bit of a think and put some intelligent analysis down on paper instead of just parroting whatever is in vogue. Great article concept.
Read it on the train this morning, not sure I entirely agree with it.

As a summation, it's basically saying have a ping from outside 50 instead of hitting up a target.

Definitely thought provoking though.

It's an interesting concept - what is the probability of finding a teammate 35-45 out, plus the accuracy of the ensuing set shot, compared to just backing yourself from 50-55m.

The four teams in the NBA conference finals are four of the most analytically driven teams in the NBA, really adhering to the threes and layups model. The concept that there could be an equivalent in footy is interesting media if nothing else, and certainly beats the usual old timers banging on about the glory years.

Purefooty with Glen Luff and David king is one of the bests football shows, it provides context to stats and is genuinely interesting.

David King is so much more likeable when he's paired up with Luff, who sticks to his guns.

Good discussion on Nic Nat here and I completely agree that i'd take him over anyone in a big game, prelim etc.

They also standardise the minutes and player ratings across the board if all players played 100 minutes. Nic Naitanui was easily the highest rated player across the league.

Interesting stuff and clarifies that disconnect you can sometimes have when you see his impact, but it isn't reflected on the stats sheet.

Edit: Also mentions the 30% harder to win the premiership from Perth. That we have 3 premierships is pretty amazing.

BT I will admit is a bit of a fool and can say some average things but he did make a bit of sense about a few things on Saturday.
First comment that struck me was why do the Umpires make the player on the mark come in 5 metres when a defender is kicking in from a pocket but when a forward is kicking from right on the boundary the guy on the mark doesn't get asked to come in 5.
The other one I liked was when Frodo was doing a random throw up and took ages to throw it up as he had narrate a story to the players about who was going up, watch out I'm coming this way, don't do this, don't do that etc. BT gave it to him saying just throw the bloody thing up. He was on Frodo's case the rest of the game.
Frodo does talk way too much, yes some is warranted and good but a lot just doesn't need to be said.

I noticed during AFLX most clubs were trying to get the ball to their long kickers outside 50 in order to capitalize on the easy 9 pointers (40m rather than 50) but West Coast tried to spot up regular targets and seemed to ignore the “easy” 9 pointers completely. Might be due to personnel, as we clearly used it as a preview for our young guns, but I wonder how much is due to our overall structure and reliance on JK living inside 50.

Anyone watch Bob with Nat Fyfe? Not really insightful in a footy sense, but it was great to hear two players (or recently retired in Bob's case) riffing about footy outside of the usual context - the cliches, next week's game, last week's game etc. It is great to hear players talking honestly and openly in long(ish) form about the parts of the game they enjoy, the things they don't enjoy, what they get up to behind the scenes.

The part where he said he has listened to talkback radio on the bus to a game because it takes him back to when he was a kid doing the same with his dad nearly got me.

Anyone listen to Daniel Kerr on the EaglesBackchat podcast this week. I thought he spoke really well. Had some interesting observations re state of the game and the proposed rule changes.

Loved his honesty of we played crap on the day v Bombers.

Also loved his story of him Gardy and Cousins sneaking off to a resort on a boot camp on an island

His presentation style is always a bit cringe, but Dermie is giving a really good snapshot of how the dimensions of a ground (particularly width) can impact the effectiveness of a zone defence.

Half time of the Fox Footy lab, Bulldogs vs Geelong.

Gary Buckenara's midseason analyse on WC is pretty good I think.

West Coast is definitely ahead of where we all thought they would be this year following the retirements of Matt Priddis and Sam Mitchell. The challenge for this group heading into 2018 was to find players to step up, take on leadership roles and become the go-to players that Priddis and Mitchell were. They have certainly found the next wave. In the midfield it’s been Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey, Elliot Yeo, Jack Redden has stepped up and Chris Masten has found form again, while the likes of Willie Rioli and Liam Ryan and even Jake Waterman up forward have added a new and exciting dimension to a team that was lacking speed and x-factor. The emergence of both Rioli and Ryan has really taken the pressure off Mark LeCras and that has seen the veteran forward find form again after struggling last year. He seems healthier and happier in his footy. It has also given the Eagles one of the most dynamic and dangerous forward lines in the league when you factor in Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and even Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett who often float down there. It is a really formidable forward set up.

Retaining Gaff and Jeremy McGovern is critical. Gaff has become a really damaging player and McGovern’s form and ability speaks for itself. He’s the general in that back half, alongside Shannon Hurn, that is working so well together following the emergence of Tom Barrass and Brad Sheppard, who has been a handy intercept player. The only concern I have with the Eagles is, as we’ve seen the last few weeks, they are vulnerable if key players are struck down with injury. I’m not convinced they quite have the depth to cover the loss of one of Darling or Kennedy or a key defender like McGovern or even Barrass or a Gaff. I will be watching them closely in coming weeks. If they do have a clean run with injuries though and get Kennedy and Darling back, then I think they can go deep in September.
