Speaking of Gerard and who foots the bills, I do find it a little odd how hard he is going on the score review system when his own mob at Fox Footy could rectify most of his gripes with better cameras. He keeps squaring blame at AFL house but in the examples he shows its so inconclusive because of the camera quality. AFL are making a meal of it but look at what they have to work with..
The onus on having better cameras for score review purposes lies with the AFL. The HawkEye system used in cricket, tennis and soccer is paid for by the governing body to my knowledge, separate to the broadcaster.

Yeah the cost would be significant. But I wonder did Foxtel invest anything after winning the rights to so many games in the recent agreement? Do they upgrade their cameras each season anyway? Or is it the type of thing where you buy cameras once every 5 years so there's this false economy of heavy investment once and then decent profits thereafter..

I have no idea. I don't have the answers, I'm simply questioning why Gerard is losing his mind over this when he works for the broadcaster who captures all the inconclusive footage and why he isn't proposing a solution.

Everyone is quick to find faults but its a rare few who offer the solution to the problem.
They've just upgraded the coverage to 4K, but that's probably the only major investment they've made in camera quality since the last rights deal. Footy's been in 1080i/1080p for about 10 years now.

From today's The Tackle

3. Return of the King

The Eagles loom large, as does ruckman Nic Naitanui. If the Eagles can hold on to second spot, they will play at least one and probably more home finals. It makes for a strong argument that they are the premiership favourites. To watch Naitanui on Saturday night was like watching a bolt of lighting — he simply energises his football team. In their two matches with Naitanui back in the team, the Eagles have won the clearances by 25 against the Hawks and 17 against the Dockers. That’s plus-42 in clearances — and Naitanui played just 50 per cent of the game. It remains to be seen if coach Adam Simpson will go with both Naitanui and Tom Hickey come September. Two ruckmen worked over the Pies in last year’s Grand Final. I reckon he will.
Played ok for a guy who is "a mile off it" #Lethal

Robbo's always been a pretty big fan of Nic I think.

It's some of these other guys though- it's like they forget the second they don't watch him for a week how damaging he is. Then they'll say something about how great he is with only a few possessions and we're all "welcome back to reality pal". Then two weeks later they'll be wondering if he takes enough marks again.

It’s a little thing but the type of incompetence that shits me - if we finish top 2 we don’t probably get more than one home final, we’re guaranteed 2. You’d think that would be something that a senior football writer would know

He's probably just leaving himself an out, knowing that the AFL has a history of randomly scheduling non-Melbourne teams to play finals in Melbourne regardless of their superior ladder position

He predicts Freo to win seven straight and finish above us, duh.

Quick 180

Leigh trying to be the next Robert Walls is he?
It's one thing to take the "I'll see which way the breeze is blowing today before jumping on the bandwagon" approach, but that still doesn't excuse him for getting it so completely wrong last week. And we're not talking about someone you can easily say "this guy simply doesn't understand footy" about either.

Fremantle (31) v West Coast (122)
In pouring rain, Dockers supporters were forced to sit through this, and worse of all, they’d paid to do so.
Imagine sitting in the rain while your team kicked 2.19. Yes, you read that right. Fremantle booted two goals and 19 behinds.
It’s like a reverse masterpiece. Surely a team of professional footballers, who after all, train for this sort of thing as a full-time job can’t have done this if not on purpose?
It’s truly astounding. I’m still marvelling over it. I mean, you could save a lot of money if you wanted to hire people who can’t kick goals. Just pick people from the crowd.
I feel for Dockers fans, ever since Fremantle entered the league, they’ve managed to pull off a very passable impression of my team the Melbourne Football Club.
Recent weeks have been particularly harsh, losing to Melbourne, Carlton and then being thumped by your cross-town rivals is the footy gods way of not just testing you but being rather mean in the process.
At least Dockers fans can comfort themselves with the fact that Ross Lyon’s rebuild is still full steam ahead.
For the Eagles, all of this was great, Nic Naitanui returned and looked good, they beat their rivals by 91-points, and they’re now 2ndon the ladder.
That’s a nice little weekend.

Its deliberate. Pumping us up hoping we fall so they can write more articles. Ideally against Collingwood so they can write 2 sets of articles.

Did you happen to buy some tinfoil over the weekend?

The three other top 4 sides going into last weekend lost whilst we thumped our hometown rival by 15 goals

Since our losses to post and Geelong that left us vulnerable at 3-3 we’ve gone 8-1 with the Sydney game our only loss - at a ground we historically suck at and won’t be returning to this year

There’s very good reasons why we’re getting positive press. I enjoy potting the media as much as anyone but if weren’t getting some smoke blown up are arse we’d be criticising the media for ignoring us

That said I prefer flying under the radar

Yes, but have we beaten Geelong at the MCG in that time? Because that's the only thing that will prove we're worthy of staying in the competition and not immediately folding.

I think it's also the fact we're now within sight of the end of the H&A season and people are looking at the ladder and the fixture and starting to pencil us in for top two behind Geelong. I think that has a clarifying effect.

Meh I am do not want the media's 'approval.' This is the same mob who writes us off everytime they lose. They basically evaluate on a week to week basis.

All they are doing is looking for something to fill the 24h news cycle.
