Instrumentals...

Solo artist/composer/producer, and recently, extra Sonic Youth member - Jim O'Rourke.

(Love the guy. Did a fantastic job on Superchunk's "Come Pick Me Up" album.)

Another quality instrumental.....this time with a more dynamic, math-ier groove going on.

Ativin - "Scissors"

Italian Director Dario Argento has made some pretty scary movie's. He's worked with George A.Romero, Ennio Morricone and other director's/composer's of film soundtracks.

Goblin were asked to provide the soundtrack to "Suspiria". A horror flick from 1976. To appreciate the music it's best to watch the movie for full affect. This is the only version of it i could find on you tube without showing parts of the film, which might not be suitable.

Yeah, I've heard quite a bit actually. (Pretty certain they were on my list a few pages back.) I really like them. Far better than their more critically-lauded fellow Canadians, Godspeed, if you ask me.

Their "And Yet And Yet" album, in particular, is fcuking excellent.

And, as you'd imagine, I like Broken Social Scene, too. And Stars. That whole Arts&Crafts label mob. Have been getting into a band called The Most Serene Republic lately, and again, they also share some members with these same bands.

As to Explosions In The Sky, they are just mind-blowing. End of.

(And of course you do realise that if scottywiper catches me talking to you, he will hate me forever.)

That is one fantastic list Dean.

As I read through the introduction, I began to formulate a running list in my head. You then proceeded to knock them off one by one. The only ones that remained were Yo La Tengo, Six Organs of Admittance and the afore mentioned Do Make Say Think.

I'm sure I'll think of more later, but in the meantime you've left me with a lot of great stuff to check out. Thank you.

Cheers, man. Yeah, I checked back on the list and you guys are right. I did leave out DMST. For which, I blame the THC. Cos' like I say, I'm a fan of theirs.

I would also like to give major props to Teenage Fanclub's "Is This Music?" off the Bandwagonesque album. It's still to this day, one of my favourite instrumental tracks off all time.

Nice call on Six Organs Of Admittance. They're another band that use vocals as well, but they've done some fine instrumentals. Ditto, Yo La Tengo, who's another one I shouldn't have left out. (On a similar note - ie. sometimes vocals, sometimes not - you could probably also add Ring Cicada, The American Analog Set, Low, and The Radar Brothers, all quality bands.)

Actually Six Organs Of Admittance has reminded me of another decent instrumental act, The Lonesome Organist.

In fact, now I think of it, there's a few more I missed.....

1 Mile North
Euphone
Drums & Tuba
5ive Style

And a few more locals......

The Night Terrors
Because Of Ghosts

Because Of Ghosts - "You Fool"

No instrumental thread would be complete without a track from Chicago's kings of instrumental music, Tortoise.

Tortoise - "Salt The Skies"

Oops, remembered another one......

Found this not long ago (for $2 at Missing Link !!), cos' I heard some really good things about the band.

Very impressed I was.

Double neck guitar alert !!

El Ten Eleven - "My Only Swerving"

Calexico's first two albums have some mexican/mariachi type instrumentals, since then have become mega popular with some lame vocal hits. Still a great band.

Calexico-Minas De Cobre

Excellent call. Like Calexico a lot. And they were formed out of Giant Sand, a fantastic band in a similar vein, but with less of a Morricone-style thing going on. Have written many fine instrumentals themselves. And, of course, both of the aforementioned bands again share some of the same members with Friends Of Dean Martinez, who were on my earlier list, and are yet another fine instrumental-based band with definite Morricone-overtones. Phew.

Okay, remembered a last few (mostly) instrumental bands that deserve a mention......

Shark Quest
Rachel's
Sonora Pine
Delicate AWOL
Rumah Sakit
Sweep The Leg Johnny
Bedhead
Sonna

And this very fine track by (sometime) RHCP guitarist, John Frusciante.....

John Frusciante - "Murderers"

Barry Adamson did many fine instrumental tracks on his various albums. As he put it, he was making film scores for movies that didn't exist.

Yet another good call. And picking up on that tangent, should probably chuck in Crime & The City Solution, too, as they share the Nick Cave connection, and they have likewise given rise to many fine soundtrack-y instrumentals over the years.

:) yes, correct on all counts :thumbsu:

Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Scuttle Buttin" rocks hard.

Like his cover of Hendrix Ballad "Little Wing"

Stevie Ray Vaughn-"Riviera Paradice"(short version)

Fantastic version...

Monte Montgomery: "Little Wing" acoustic instrumental

Room 335 - A Larry Carlton song off the album of the same name. A favourite amongst serious gee tar players with Steve Lukather (Toto, x amount of sessions etc) and of course Larry himself (Crusaders, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and probably just about everyone else) One of the last true virtuoso's. Unfortunately Luc is looking a bit fat and dopesick. :thumbsu:

NB - Could be Anthony Jackson on Bass by the look of it.
