What happens if a team uses their full quota of interchanges but then a player is ordered off for a blood rule? Can they replace that player without being penalised? Or would that team be expected to play 1 less?

I dont get why they dont just say too bad. If you use them all and then someone gets injured you just play short

agree with this.

KB said this morning it's not fair for the team who has completed their ints (interchanges), and have a player get patched up and be one short for a time.

bad luck.
although i wonder in nrl what they do.

kb wanted fixed ints, leave it as is

I think the Dogs had used 89 when Murphy went off injured. If they had used 90 they wouldn't have been able to replace him right?

yes the resolution here is to keep one or two up the sleeve

if Petrie breaks his leg rather than the blood rule then it's stiff shit

Exactly - I can't understand why this is even an issue. If Petrie gets injured and Scott was too stupid to keep one or two up his sleeve then they play one short. There should be no difference with the blood rule, you manage your interchange cap to allow for these kind of contingencies. Melbourne still had a couple up our sleeve inc ase something like that happened. From memory North had 5 or 6 more interchanges left than us midway through the last (10-6 or something) by the end of the game I think North had used all there's while Melbourne still had a couple left.

What would happen if North (or any team) had used all their interchanges with 2 minutes to go. Suddenly two North players collide going for a mark knocking each other out. They are taken off the field but can't be replaced. Do North play two short for the last two minutes? Do they send players on anyway and cop the fine and free kick/50?

Exactly x 2!!

this obsession to make it "fair" in an unfair and compromised competition is a waste of time. if the AFL cant devise a draw containing fixtures against each side home and away then nothing will ever be fair.

coaches havent thought through all of the possibilities in a game where they maybe under stress due to limited or NO ints left.
idiots will say "oh, but how about if he breaks his leg or does his knee accidentally like murphy? shouldnt we be allowed to have one free of charge?". the more we leave it to interpretation and conditions, the more we lump more conditions to deal with conditions which confuses players more and umpires alike.

bloody hell we live in a world of entitlement.

remember in the 90s hawthorn hawks were playing someone at waverley. one of their players broke his leg or ankle and hit the bench. in the last Q i think. but the bench was full of injured players. he had to stay on, and even kicked a goal!

wait, i think i got it. the afl and its minions create problems and issues in order to maintain coverage in the media. keep people like us talking about it. with competition from other codes the afl needs to stay out front and relevant. unlike other sports/codes like NBA, MLB, NFL, various soccer leagues in europe, we dont have multiple games during the week....only weekend games as such.

Brad Scott realises that the AFL allocates him 90 interchanges for this very purpose, right?
