would we have lost the game if

we ran out interchange with 5 mins to go and we copped an injury (serious) eg concussion?

what is the penalty for an extra interchange?

risky business

Yeah thanks Speedy, we could be talking about banjos and all, yet all you want to do is count the stupid "exchange" interchange garage nonsense...

Play me a banjo son 'cause I don't care....

Yeah but no but yeah

To have Barlow and Neale sitting on the bench for three minutes cos the interchanges weren't timed right could be expensive in a final
Capped interchanges after a 6 day break in humid or hot conditions is just plain dangerous! But then, despite all the rhetoric the AwFuL aren't prioritising players health & safety!

Probably a massive fine, but isn't that what the interchange umpires are for?

Speaking of that, I am certain I saw Suban run onto the ground before the player coming off was through the interchange; I mean by a long way.
The only other explanation is we were one man short on the ground but when the player coming off went through the change, no other player went on.
Subes was early by about 15 metres.

What would happen if a player was bloodied and we were out of interchanges? Would they have to wait till the wounded player was patched up?

Could be an interesting use of fake blood capsules to get round the interchange cap otherwise !;)

Don't know. It was third qtr but the play was still going. With blood rule it is usually stopped until the relief player has got to the same spot the bloodied player was, on the ground.
Saw the same Fred. I didn't realise Spurr was bleeding.

I reckon our fitness has got us over the line a few times this season. It will be tried even further if the cap is reduced even further. Why not just scrap the interchange and make it a real war of attrition?

If I see Spurr running to the bench now I just assume he's bleeding & get pleasantly surprised if he's not.

This interchange cap is ridiculous though. Who does it benefit by having one? And any lower than the current cap is going to start killing players & unfit teams.

the idea is that the best players stay on the ground for longer. Bad idea.
They want - Fyfe to be tired, so go sit in the goal square.
Mundy tired - CHF
Hill Tired - Pocket

The game will therefore be more spread out and players playing in more traditional positions than crowding the ball, as teams will not be able to keep this press for the game.

I think they missed the point: Say we're slightly fitter than the other team, we can press for longer ... 4-5 goals in 10 minutes perhaps finishing the game.
Its a terrible idea.

I actually noticed at quarter time that we had already made 40 interchanges. Huge number for the first quarter

They should allow for more subs - making it more tactical like in soccer. It would make the subs more interesting if a team subs out 3 defenders for more attacking players for example. Or if there is a solid lead, the reverse.

That is my thinking. Clubs have big squads - WHY can't they use more players on game day? I'm not advocating for the full on defensive/offensive/special plays teams like American Football (although at least they get to use anyone in their squad on match day) But surely for injury prevention and extra dimension to the game more players could be included.

Would extended benches and more subs ruin the game??

eg. 4-5 bench players
1-2 subs

Exactly. I can see fitter teams like Freo running out the game ok. Hill & tired aren't two words I can see ever being next to each other. And putting Fyfe up forward isn't a rest for the other team because he's so dangerous up there.
So while we could cope with it, younger teams like GWS, or terribly unfit teams like Melbourne are going to either run their younger players completely ragged trying to keep up, and potentially cause more injuries from not being able to rest. Or they're just going to get even more towelled up by quality opposition than they currently are.

Perhaps we were using it as a tactic to try and out run Port early ? We did get out to a pretty big lead.

I think we had heaps of interchanges early because of the 6 day rest. Kept the players fresher for the first three quarters, at least.
Alternatively it could have been a match ups issue. We seemed a little flat in the first quarter, so maybe the bench changes were more necessary than usual.
