Interesting article on Hurley/Sidebottom

Ryder knocks down a big spoil over Fevs head. Houli is at his feat, reads the ball off hands -- Quick handball to Hurley who bangs it onto the left 60m to a running Myers who marks it running back with the flight of the ball but does not break stride --Neagle is storming out of the square and has it delivered lace out onto his chest.

Mmmm. I like it

Can I request that happens at least a dozen times a game :thumbsu:

I assume he meant that they rated Rich the highest of the midfielders and Sidebottom second but during the week leading up to the draft Sidebottom took the lead as "Rich had limited improvement"

Does anyone know if Ziebell was on our radar at all? He seemed to tick all the boxes. I thought he would have been a very good fit, if we'd gone that way at 5?

Not sure if he was highly conisdered, I'm sure he would've been but like yourself, I was a big fan of Jack's as well. Still very happy with Hurley, fills a few gaps in our defensive half.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining about our drafting. I am happy with Hurley too and our drafting this year sits more and more comfortably with me each day. It was just that i thought it strange that Ziebell wasn't discussed (here on Ess BF) as an option... like hardly mentioned by anyone at all! I realise his testing was Avg and wondered whether this had a major influence?

I agree that Rich is probably not Knights' "kind of player", but a tall, big-bodied tough-nut, skilled, versatile mid who's a quality individual with leadership qualities? Good get by the Roos, I reckon.

Anyway, it's a moot point, given the way we went, but I'd still be interested to hear from anyone with any inside knowledge of EFC's thinking leading up to the draft.

Sidebottom shouldve been a 20-25 pick and he did well in championships which probably put hiom 30 after that than the GF performance shouldve pushed him to late teens or early 20's. Hurley was always a high up their draft pick. Very glad we got Zaharakis at 23 by hearings hes a gun and works very hard at his game.

I wanted Sidebottom at 5 because i thought 1 of Mckernan, Schoenmakers, Lisle, Trengove would sneak through. But i think we did very well and am very happy with our first 2 picks. Although not ahppy with last 2. Hartlett and Trengove is just that tad better and port drafed as well as any.

WCE and Port were the winners with the crows 3rd for me although T.Lee is a terrible footballer and everyone should get drafted if he can.

Getting Prismall at the basement price of Pick 39 makes this a favourable draft for me. If we can count on the first 2 being top notch and Prismall becoming a core part of our team over the next decade I think we have done very well. The last few picks are always spectulative but getting Prismall so cheap should turn out to be an absolute steal after we get the expected quality service from him.

I think Sidebottom will turn out to be a lot better than many of you think. I think you are being overly harsh. However, I am not disappointed that we got Hurley.

I agree. The kid clearly has a ot going for him and I hope he does well at the Pies. Very happy with Hurley in all honesty.

Im going to make a big call but our drafting over the years has been poor, especially since our last flag. I think we need a big improvment to how hard we look and who is on our panel of recruiting. We seem to have been lucky to have very high picks in the last 5 years due to our disappointing seasons and we have not got anything special from any yet.

Can someone post our draftees as i can not find them from 2002 - 2008 for me and lets have a look at what we have got??

Actually I think our recruiting since 2005 has been marvellous.

2005 Recruits:
Ryder
Dempsey
Neagle
Lonergan
Lucy:o

2006:
Gumbleton
Jetta
Hislop:o
Davey
Houli
Reimers

2007:
Myers
Pears
Daniher
Hooker

2008:
Hurley
Zaharakis
Prismall
Still
Slattery

2006 is looking like we pretty much hit the jackpot though there are still question marks over many of them. Most have looked settled when they have played and we have seen there talent.

2005 is looking like it will be even more important then the 2006 draft. We have Ryder who can move along our spine and Neagle who we have pencilled in as a FF. Then there is dashing Dempsey's run off the half back though I am concerned at his lack of game time. Lonergan was probably the most surprising player of 2008 emerging from nearly being delisted to a starting 18 player. Tough in and under player which is exactly what we need.

2007 and 2008 draft are too soon to rate.

Agree, although I was blowing his bags pretty early, not many others did but don't forget, not many people on here have actually seen the U/18's live so information on here you virtually take as a grain of salt, other than you know Ant, foj1, etc. I thought he was the player that we needed just to top off the other midfielders but getting that tough, skilful, tall defender was exactly what we needed our recruiter's were saying.
