I just read a comment on joffas facebook page but couldn't respond due to his settings and wondered if anyone here knows the answer.
Joffa was talking about Melbourne getting the gate from queens birthday every year, and somebody said that Eddie told a legends meeting that we somehow benefit from this but he couldn't/wouldn't say how and we had to trust him.
For the life of me i can't imagine how we benefit, particularly as the one request we have in the fixture- no etihad games- is ignored every year.
Does anyone know what the pies alledgedly get out of this, or has it been stated on here before?

It would be part of the MCG "main tenant" contract that we have.

We give the MCG/MCC more big games per year then anyone else, and by greasing the wheel for the MCC's favourite club, the Dees, we get the prime deal at the MCG for an extended period.

If I recall correctly, Eddie apparently told last year's 'fan forum' (the one where Davoren did his best Black Knight act... :drunk: ) that Collingwood allows/doesn't oppose Melbourne getting a monopoly on home team rights for Queen's Birthday as a way of banking some IOUs with the AFL.

Personally, I'd like Eddie to call one of those IOUs in to get Sam Weideman under the Father/Son rule, or get us out of the deal that forces us to play home games at Etihad, but that's another debate for another time...

when you give someone something with no strings attached, they are always indebited to you. Of course, we wouldnt withdraw on the arrangement unless the AFL and MCC and the other parties start treating us without due respect. Not that we would threaten to withdraw, but we might have to protect our own interests and seek other arrangements...... in business, there are no friendships, just mutually beneficial arrangements...ed has a good grasp of capitalism

I thought it was just he benefit of guaranteeing more games at MCG. If the game is always a Melbourne Home match that means it gives us at least an extra game at the MCG every season.

Thanks for those answers.
Yeah i guessed it had to be the 14 mcg games, though we would end up playing that many for crowd pulling ability anyway.

From recollection, it is an agreement that has been in place for years to help out the struggling Demons financially by gifting them a home game on a high profile public holiday so that they all the gate receipts. In return, the AFL schedules only 5 interstate games a year for the Pies - that is why the fixture is the way it is and why the peanuts constantly whinging year in year out about Collingwood not travelling as much should STFU as they want to have their cake and eat it too. This is what Eddie would be referring to when he says the Pies benefit from the arrangement.

Chris Dawes.. what on earth did our recruitment staff see in him. Yes he was big hearted but pffff hopeless.

How can he be Hopeless as part of a Premiership Side?

Dinosaur- thats possible, but teams like essendon get the same number of away games anyway.
Davo- don't worry, it was a lady that responded to him that got my attention, not old joff.

I'm sure Collingwood gets more than goodwill out of the arrangement. My opinion is that by having Melbourne as a guaranteed away game every year it adds a space for another big home game. The QB revenue is a lot more important to Melbourne than it is to us. Brownie points probably come in handy as well.

It doesn't stop Melbourne poaching all our staff and players though. A few years back they were threatening to become Melbourne 3.0 (2.0 being Carlton) with all the staff they had lured over. From memory Eddie threatened a war over it :P
