At the end of the year we are going to have to delist at least four players, three for the ND and one to upgrade Laird ( I think thats how it will work ) and i was looking at our list to see who we would delist.
There is one certain in Tambling and im not sure who else, considering that those traded dont count as picks in the ND.
Others in the gun would be Johncock, Joyce, Grigg, Martin, Johnston and Callanan.
Now as we used a pick in last years draft for Joyce and not Garlett I would be amazed that our club could be incompetant enough to do that. And as he was redrafted did he get a two year deal?
I would not delist Johncock next year as he still has worth on our list for depth.
Grigg is still worth persisting with.
Johnston is a talent and we need him for our forward stocks and with our draft picks been smashed next year we wont find a forward with his ability at pick 60. Also with Walkers knee we need him on the books.
Martin is a good depth player, but he may one to go.
I didnt agree with upgrading Callanan due to his age and inability to fire against a good defensive side. Again like Joyce, our club gave him a place on our main list over Garlett and other youngsters worth a punt so if he is delisted at the end of the year it would be another strike against our recruiters and list managers. And i would have thought he got a two year deal when he was upgraded.
So in reality i see the only option this year for delisting is Tambling, Martin, and Johncock.
What options do you think?

Well Kyle Hartigan and Rory Laird will get upgraded.

I think Johncock, Calliahan, Tambling and maybe Porplizia are the 4 senior players under the pump.

I would look at trading Henderson, Wright, Jeancsh and Martin.

I cant see Porps getting the chop. It would really be embarrising to the fools who upgraded Callanan last year so to keep face they will keep him for another year. Same goes for Joyce.

Why do you think that Hartigan is an automatic upgrade? Going from stats alone (I know, not the be all and end all) he hasn't been any better than solid. I'd be happy to keep him on the rookie list but I don't see him being upgraded yet.

Because we don't have that many tall key defenders and to help our depth, him getting upgraded will help. Plus, next year there is no certainty to have someone on the long term injury list and if we have a raft of short term injuries to our key defenders, we will need him.

Sando said we will be looking to trade for another key defender and upgrading him will help the balance of our list.

I also think he will have a much better seeing half if the year now he is settled in Adelaide and will show his real worth.

Can see Martin asking for a trade at the end of the year if he doesn't get more game-time. Otherwise we'll probably keep as he still has a year to go on his contract.
Tambling, Stiffy and Callinan will most likely be gone. Laird a definite rookie upgrade.

Going on my posting earlier, I'd come up with the following list of possible candidates:
  • Tambling
  • Johncock
  • Callinan
  • Martin
  • Jaensch
  • Riley
  • Joyce
  • Johnston
  • Thompson
  • Graham
Some of those are more likely to depart than others - Tambling, Johncock & Callinan would be near certainties. Martin & Jaensch both have contracts for 2014, due to a massive brain explosion by our list manager last year, so their positions are probably relatively safe. Graham & Thompson probably aren't up to scratch, but are backups in areas where we have player shortages, so they too are probably relatively safe. Cutting an injured Johnston would be incredibly harsh, but it could well be on the cards.

I would suggest that the fates of Riley, Joyce & Johnston would depend upon the outcome of trade week - and the final decision as to how many players the club wishes to draft.

As for rookie list promotions.. Laird is an absolute certainty to be upgraded. My guess is that Hartigan will be retained for a second year on the rookie list, without being promoted. Rookie promotions count towards our quota of new draftees, so we still only need to create a minimum of 3 vacancies.

This is my "at risk" list. Not all of them will depart - that much is certain. We do need a certain level of depth, as a pool of replacements should our senior players get injured. However, I would be very surprised if any player not on that list were delisted at the end of the season.

** This discussion does not take into account the many possible permutations and possibilities of trade week.

I would think Joyce is going to need a miracle to play AFL football. Stiffy, Callinan and Tambling are just about certainties.

Won't be surprised if Porps retires.

This is why I was astounded when the club made a massive list management gaffe by giving Brodie Martin and Matthew Jaensch multi-year deals last year, both IMO should be in the gun for being delisted.

Martin is 25 at the end of the year, he's a list clogger who shown nothing at AFL level. Jaensch has slightly more to offer than Martin, but considering that he has been overtaken by guys like Kerridge, Lyons and with Crouch he's become dead wood. Honestly I am sure how or why the club felt last year that both (especially Martin) had a long term future with the club.

We were happy in giving a spot to an older player who at best had a couple of years left, but not willingto take the punt on a guy who at best is a 12 year player and AA. I know which one I would have taken, especially with our ability to pick up talent in the draft pool for the next two years due to draft sanctions.

Predictable though - we're too nice.

Martin and Jaensch, if they go, will end up on another list.
And will still amount to nothing as AFL players.

They don't have that one outstanding attribute. They are good honest players but they just don't have one attribute better than the rest.

Yep, I think we may see Ben Dowdell upgraded and replace Angus Graham on the senior list next year.

He seems to be coming along nicely.

We may have 3 rookie player upgrades next year.

There are plenty 100+ game 'good honest players' in the game mate. You're right, they won't ever be stars, but they can still be average players and have a decent career.
