Gee Roos would be a great coup for Carlton.

His players seem to just want to play for him....and That is paramount.

Unlikely unfortunately.

What exactly is the appeal of Richardson? He seems to be next annointed AFL coach, but why?

Coached a couple of flags in the EFL, assistant at the Dogs, development manager at the Pies and assistant at the Dons.

Has been involved in the coaching side of things for a long time I guess. The Essendon stint would seem to tarnish his reputation potentially. May have had a win with developing players at the Pies I guess.

Is he tactically brilliant or are we buying into media spin?

I think Swann and Icke are smart enough operators to not fall into any media trap.

Richardson would be a pretty good coach, its just been a case of being at the right place at the wrong time.

Regardless of how true the rumour is, there is no doubt Swan and Icke are putting in the ground work for the 2012 coaching position. If we stagnate in 2011 he'll be gone. 2010 was an improvement year because we lost 2 very experienced, quality footballers, and the young talent on our list filled the void nicely. The real disappointment was we were in a position to secure a top-4 spot and stuffed it up with a monumental self-destructive form slump. The expectations at our great club are always high. We're not interested in achieving "acceptable" finishes. It's all about winning flags, everything else is failure basically. If Ratten can improve enough to take the next step, then great... sign him up again, otherwise plan B gets executed. We have a history of being very brutal re. coaches. We don't stuff around.

if malthouse wants it the carlton job is his in 2012. as they say, you can take that to the bank

it is simply a matter of a) whether mick still has the passion to take on another challenging senior role when he finishes at coll and b) his actual contractual status at coll. there is good mail around that he has never signed a contract to become director of coaching at the pies
This is true from what i have heard, however on the flip side, contract's today are just a piece of paper with ink on it.

So our players don't want to play for Ratten?

Our effort after the Collingwood game and in the final against Sydney suggests they're not only looking out for themselves, but want to win for Ratten.

If it's true that they wanted to bring in Laidley as a mentor, then Ratten was within his rights to go ballistic and say no. The head coach should be given the confidence to make his own decisions as to who we wants to work with. If not, then they should just bite the bullet and sack Ratten if they don't believe in him. Having a mentor there would be overkill and an insult to any coach in his fourth season. I prefer the setup with Richardson as our senior assistant coach and Brown as backline coach after they gained experience at other clubs.

Laidley isn't even mentoring Primus, but working as their midfield coach.

Don't think there's much to this rumour.

TG Our effort in the final against sydney was a worry. The first half was soft and lazy footy. The second half was completly differnt with the players having a real dip. We played two completly different games of football that day.

The players and their soft approach for several weeks, cost Fish any chance of a romantic ending. We had a string of must win games just to get into the finals, and then we needed to try and win another one to get a home final. After a 7-4 start, they left us no breathing room by being insipid for about 7 weeks.
What ODN said. There was no room for charity by round 18. The players had effectively snookered Fish out of the side.

Interesting that after the big Essendon win, Ratts said that we'd just come off increased training loads, which probably explained the lethargic performances preceding.

My question is: if increased training loads make you play like shit for two months, what value are they?

It's professional football. It's cut throat. Fisher was bloody lucky to play 50 games let alone 99. We all would have liked him to get to 100 but it's not a fairy tail, it's AFL.

Ask Neil Craig, AD. Got me stuffed.

Yeah, would've been great to see Fish get 100, but at day's end the MC HAS to pick the best team it can

Apart from struggling to secure a spot in the finals in 2010, sponsor dollars are on the line.

If a sympathy selection was done for Fish and we failed to make the finals, then what would people have said?

Love Ratts, I recall saying several years ago I would take MM in a heartbeat. His public and press persona need work but the bloke gets the best out of his players.

Agree 100% Would be a bloody good get.

So very true Parrot. Particularly the bolded bit. Ask Jezza !!!

Its as simple as this:

We make the Preliminary final Ratts gets contract extension.

We dont, Malthouse (1st option) or Richardson (2nd option) become senior coach.

Roos has no intention of coaching within the next 2-3 years if ever again & Matthews has suggested to Carlton he is not up to the rigours of being a coach again (Health issues).

Not sure if we need to make a prelim final, but we'd have to at least win a final for Ratts to legitimately make claims that we have progressed as a club.

If what the OP is suggesting is true, I can't imagine the club will be in any hurry to re-appoint him, given how many good assistants there are out there at the moment.

A bit going on at the club
Laidley was all set up to be a mentor to Ratts.
This had been organised by Swann and Icke as part of their review of last years performance.
They felt he needed tactical assistance
Club thought it would help with match day tactics.
Laidley was signed sealed and delivered.
The story was put around that Laidley was in Melbourne looking at business opportunities*
Ratts went ballistic when he found out they had approached Laidley and told them he didn’t need a mentor
Big fight between Ratten Swann and Icke.
Ratten thought they were white anting him and they thought he needed the assistance
Now not talking
Club will review coaching position during the season so if we start off bad watch out
First 6-8 weeks are crucial
Laidley who had hung around in Melbourne was told it was a no go and then had to return to Port Adelaide
Club has gone out of its way to surround Ratten with good assistant coaches
However all of them have said they wouldn’t mind working with another coach if things changed during the season
Whether or not they would consider giving Richardson or Brown the senior job until the end of the season I am not sure.
Discussions continuing with Malthouse Matthews Roos as club would prefer senior experienced premiership coach. So although they say they won’t coach again feelers are still out
Disappointed with the trading period as hoped to either pick up a key position player or trade into a better position in the draft however the deals fell over.
The recruiting department has been told they must get a key position player.
Hughes was arguing best available which would be another mid more than likely at 18
The requirements are an inside mid a key position defender and another key position forward
If there are two players of similar ability must go the key position in early picks at this draft.
I am not sure if I told you about Fish
Several senior players went to ratts last season and said they would take a week off to give Fisher his 100 games.
This was about 5 weeks or so out from finals. The Coach said no
Some players still upset about this as they said it showed a lack of respect and appreciation for a bloke who never did the wrong thing by the club
I felt they could have got rid of Thornton and kept Fisher but need a backman in case of injury plus Thornton had a contract
Don’t know if they would pick up Fisher with a rookie selection as Ratts is not keen
Going to try Betts on ball and Garlett on the wing during the season and Yarran has been told to build up his stamina
Cacchia is looking good at training
O’Keeffe looks like he is recovering well from his injuries and may get a rookie spot

This post started out as a major scoop inside info but ended with last 3 lines telling us info we already know

Sure he has the legitimacy to make claims should he win a final, but you and i both know that 1 final at this stage of our development is not mere enough. The voices for his head will be far too loud and i know for a fact that Swann and Icke are not the most patient of operators.

If OP is true, Swann and Icke should not have approached Laidley behind Ratten's back. I can understand why Ratts wouldn't be happy with that. Hopefully they are all big enough to move past this and get on with the job of winning no 17 !!

I would be very surprised in the OP is true.

Laidley was overlooked by other Melbourne based clubs & ultimately ended up staying with Port because he couldn't get a gig. There is no way that Swann & Icke would have had him in the frame & then backed down because of Ratts' thoughts. They don't operate like that.

As for the Fisher rumour, I find it very hard to believe that any player, just weeks out from a possible finals appearance, would put their hand up & say "drop me". It would not happen. Fisher was not in our best 22 at the time, based on his performance against Collingwood. He had no more to offer & our forward line looked a lot better with Waite & Hendo as the talls & Betts, Garlett, Robinson & even Walker as the smalls & mediums.

Fisher was very fortunate to make it to 99 games & was not going to be gifted a 100th game at the expense of the team's best interests heading towards the finals.
