New stuff from Caro re the COLA...

The Sydney Swans are mounting a case to preserve the contentious cost-of-living allowance that has become a festering sore point among most of their rivals, who predict the extra player payments could be removed or reduced by the AFL before the 2015 season….

''The highest-paid player in Sydney should have the same buying capabilities as the highest-paid player in Melbourne,'' he said. ''The buying capabilities should be equal for every player on relative contracts around Australia.'' (Andrew Ireland)

I'm not here to argue the case either way, but by this logic shouldn't players in cheaper markets (Adelaide/Brisbane for example) get less than those in Melbourne? They earn the same but can buy more due to lower property prices etc…and where does Perth fit in?? Hmmmmmmmmm….

Let's all rank the cities, shall we?

Just remove it in 2 or 3 % increments each year until it's gone. Removing it all at once would be ridiculous. Then just keep the salary cap the same regardless of city. Seems like the only way to stop the hysteria.

This simply cannot work if they want to have teams in small markets with cheaper costs of living.

Also, the COLA is not a bad thing, it just needs to be regulated and spread evenly across all signed players instead of lumped into a massive contract or two for top stars. Make Sydney negotiate contracts with the same cap money as all other clubs, and make the COLA an end-of-year reward dictated by the league office.

Thats the issue that the COLA is not regulated, does anyone know what there rookies/first year players are on? If they earn 10% extra then the COLA logic is sound. If they dont then it has nothing to do with cost of leaving and is a competitive fund.
I accept the swans need to be strong for a strong AFL, so a 3% advantage is ok, but an extra million in the cap is rubbish. Especially if they can use the my cities more expansive than yours excuse.

Agree, I actually believe 1% each year over the next 10 years. Reducing it to quickly would have to big an impact on the swans and would unravel all the hard work they have put in over the years to make this a good club.

Don't see much hysteria, dude…looks like some fairly reasoned discussion actually...

Seems the 'hysteria' card works to prolong your status-quo. Interesting indeed...

Erm, no. It would bring you back to the level playing field.

Perth is the most expensive city to live in.

There's actually a lot of outrage about cola on bf, you just need to look beyond this thread, it's not hard to find.

The logic should be that in expanding, the afl needed inducements to get players to sydney.

Buddy openly said he went because he wanted to be in sydney, so that time is clearly over

The cola should apply to just adeleide
Agreed. Even I don't want to live here.

The COLA only applies in Sydney because it is legalised cheating.

The NRL did the same with the Melbourne Storm to keep them competitive. 13 million dollars was pumped into that club each year by the competition co-owners. I don't know if they got any salary cap allowances, but it's another example of the competition propping up an expansion club.

My understanding is this is how it works currently and then the CoLA is added onto the top of that contract.

Ireland said the Swans would struggle to attract players without compensating for Sydney's higher living costs.

''I can honestly say COLA [the cost-of-living allowance] has in no way assisted us in the recruiting of a player,'' Ireland said.

Umm, what???

It is, kind of.

The Swans get the $900,000, and it gets cut up by salary, not on a per person basis. Buddy gets his million, then he gets an extra 100k on top (1/9 of the cola). A rook making 100k per year gets 10k extra. By distributing it on a contract basis instead of a per-person basis, their essentially able to use it as a bargaining chip - a nobody getting 100k won't be arsed about the extra 10k, but when you're targeting big free agents, it allows Sydney to come in under other offers in terms of the contract, but the player knows they will get an extra cut.

Let's say Hawthorn offered 1.05 mil a year. Sydney could offer 1 mil, but then Buddy knows he's getting another 100k on top, for 1.1 a year. Sydney has less of a cap hit, Buddy gets more money, and Sydney has more left to let them better stock their talent pool.

Also, nowhere does it say that a Swan has to live in Sydney and actually deal with the cost of living year-round.

This argument basically assumes that the salary cap should be manipulated so that players from all clubs can all get their preferred beach front house. I'm sorry but I have to disagree.
The arguments not so much that they get it, its that apart from GWS, no one else gets it. I bet the perth players would love it too.

I still think its funny that Brisbane lost it after 2003, and now they cant keep players.
Yep, this. Could be a fair argument made for some sort of retention allowance for the Lions.

The AFL should get a prominent figure to campaign for that. I think Eddie's the man for that job. ;)
