Thanks for the welcome guys. This my my favourite saints photo as my dad and uncle are the boys down the front. Pretty sure it's taken in 1965

Brilliant photos.

But this one is earlier than 1965 I think.

Neil Roberts is the photo next to the Coach so I'm guessing he is still captain.

Even though the Doc is in the first row.

And I can't see Stewie.

I reckon it's taken at the Junction in the Doc's first or second year: 1963 or 1964.

Snake,

A great post there.....magical pics.......thanks for posting.

Hey guys, long time reader first time poster... ect. Love my Saints!
My grandfather was a photographer who loved the saints and was close with the teams through the 50s and 60s. We still have thousands of saints photos, so much so I haven't been through them all. Anyway... thought I would post one of my favourites
Carl Ditterich and Darrel Baldock circa 1964/5
Photo by Mal Thomson
Great photo. I would love to see the photos you've got. Wow. Never seen the photo of Carl and Doc. You must have a treasure trove there! Gee, I hope you and the club get together. And then share with us fans.

Another great photo WhiskySaint and what a great connection to your family. I would say 1962. Neil Roberts didn't play any senior games after 1962 and Jeans started coaching in '61 so that fits as Captain and Coach. Doc came to the club in '62 and played 15 games that year. Looks like Ian Synman (back row 3rd from right) and Alan Morrow (back row 2nd from left). Morrow played 17 games in 1962 and Synman played 18.

I think that may have been the day the Hawks came back from 10 goals down and beat us. Daniel Harford jagged a few for them I seem to remember.
I was at the game with a Hawthorn supporting friend of mine and he was in tears at half time, wanted to go home but stayed so I could enjoy it.

Boy did he make a good decision...

From the look of things it looks to be a St.Kilda home game, and the home games we played in 1962 were;

vs South Melbourne at Junction Oval
vs Essendon at Junction Oval
vs Richmond at Junction Oval
vs Carlton at Junction Oval
vs North Melbourne at Junction Oval
vs Collingwood at Junction Oval (Howell DID NOT play)
vs Fitzroy at Junction Oval
vs Footscray at Junction Oval
vs Hawthorn at Junction Oval

If you look closely at the picture you'll see striped socks for the away side. Teams with striped socks in 1962 from the list above were;

South Melbourne
Essendon
Richmond
North Melbourne
Footscray
Hawthorn

Guernsey is a dark colour, and teams with the same from that list above are;

Essendon
Richmond

I'd go with one of those. I think it's Richmond.

This is the 1962 team;

5b666fdd5da0ffc4af064ed6ce58df13.jpg

Looks similar to the Howell pic.

Many thanks GJD.

You're right about being at the Junction.

I should have picked that up from Howell wearing black (and therefore home) shorts.

It's just that I don't recognise the grandstand, and that's only from driving past the Junction over the last any number of years.

Do you know if they knocked one down?

I was intrigued by the crowd: that grandstand is packed.

From your analysis it's definitely either Essendon or Richmond.

So the opposition needed to be both well supported and successful.

Would that be Richmond too?

Yeah the team I posted was the '62 Richmond team. If you compare that shade of black/grey with the Howell pic I think it looks pretty similar.

If it is infact Richmond, then the game would be Round 6, 1962 St.Kilda v Richmond at the Junction Oval. St.Kilda 13.10.88 def Richmond 12.8.80.

Actually, I might disagree.

I think it might be Essendon.

Round 4 rather than Richmond Round 6.

ONLY based on the attendance:

37,300 for Round 4.

23,600 for Round 6.

Essendon were both minor premiers and premiers that year which would explain the crowd.

And that grandstand sure looks packed.

("Packed to the rafters" to paraphrase a certain wrestling commentator from that era).

FWIW Essendon won that game by 4 points.

But many thanks for the research.

(I know Dad took me to a game at the Junction but I only have a very vague memory of it. Too young to appreciate it I fear. So I don't recognise the venue at all: unlike Moorabbin for example.)

Gonna post some pics of Trevor Barker.
Some will be pictures that weve all seen before and hopefully a few you havnt seen.
An amazing player. Known for his high leaping marks but his courage and tackling were just as impressive.
Back in the old 'Duffle Coat' days this bloke had Number 1 on a legion of supporters backs.
One of the Saints best ever and sadly missed.

A young Barks getting ready. Love the old desert boots under the bench as the ADIDAS boots go on:D
