The easiest way to work that out rather than going 1+2+3, etc... Is to do this equation (it works for any sequence of continuous whole numbers).

(Min + Max) X (Max/2)

I.E. (1+36) X (36/2) = 666

On a standard die, (1+6) X (6/2) = 21

I find it quite handy when calculating how much a trifecta will cost me if I want to include more than three runners.

Other great former Olympic events included Power Boat racing, Two-handed throws (add up how far you throw with each hand), Swimming Obstacle race, Plunging (Dive in - see how far you go without stroking or kicking), Greek discus (don't ask), and the famous Sailors-Only 100M Feestyle.

The slowest-ever time in the Olympic marathon was recorded by a japanese competitor in the 1912 Marathon. He passed out during the race and was cared for by a local family. He returned to japan without notifying any officials, and so was never registered as withdrawing. He eventually finished the race in 54 years. He also competed in the 1920 Games and again failed to finish the marathon - no updates on his progress at the moment.

The Olympics also had Art Competitions - Gold medals were awarded for Sculpture, literature, Architecture, Painting and music. They ran from about 1912 to 1948, and attracted crowds just as big as the sporting events. They are notable for the winners being basically competely undistinguished in their various fields - the Olympic medal is their one and only career highlight. Two people have won both sporting and artictic gold medals - and technically the oldest olympic medallist is Brit who won a Medal for his etchings.

It was a raised sloping platform( tsk, tsk) , and you had to bend in the right way, hold your hand out straight etc. Not sure if there were 'style' points or not. It was based upon classical greek depictions of discus throwing. Needless to say, there was controversy about the final result, and it wasn't held much after that.
