Some interesting stats from the Anzac Day Game in terms of age and experience of the playing group. I ran an Excel spreadsheet with the ages, draft dates and games played of all the players who were selected yesterday and makes for good reading.

Of the 22 selected:
Average games played= 87
Average years played = 6.4
Average age = 24.1

Age groups 18-20 = 6 (27% of playing group)
Age groups 21-25 = 9 (41% of playing group)
Age groups 26-30 = 5 (23% of playing group)
Age group 30+ = 2 (9% of playing group)

Senior Players still to return:
BUCKLEY, HOLLAND, LICURIA, LONIE, MEDHURST & WAKELIN.
Average games played = 173
Average years played = 10.8
Average age = 28.6

So, what all this tells me is we have a very good, strong, healthy group of young players with plenty of years left to play and the senior players who still have several years left to pass on their experience. All in all, I'd say the future looks extremely promising. And keep in mind, the stats I have provided only covers the 22 from yesterday and 6 others who are returning, it doesn't cover the remaining 12 plus 4 rookies, so there is still a number of guys who have played senior footy and the new kids who are coming through.

I concluded early this year when assessing the list, that our depth is fantastic, and I stay true to this word after seeing Toovey, Cox and Dick do well at the top level and the second tier players stepping up.

I have to say and yes I'm gushing on this one. Toovey in his games so far has just been a revelation which is stunning in that hsi NAB Cup game was just SHITE.
Yet in proper AFL season he's been really good. Hardly ever looks flustered. I know the penny will drop sooner or later and he'll go shocking for a while but thus far really really strong debut.

Its encouraging. Whats evident is the massive hole in the over 25's left by years of poor recruiting, that has caused the club to underperform in recent years. But the good news is that hole is quickly being filled by the over 21's like H Shaw, R Shaw, T Cloke and Didak. Topping this off is the sensational form of the under 21's who have debuted in the past two years, and the potential of those yet to debut.

The Pies are definitely in a transition phase. But the way the young kids are developing, its looking like a seamless transition.

All we need is a ruck, and a couple more mids, and continued development from the kids, and we are on the way.

Can we make the grand final in time for Bucks and Rocca? If Buckley plays in 2008 and we draft a ready-made ruckman I think its very realistic. By September 2008 Cox, Dick, Toovey, Thomas, O'brien, Pendelbury, Maxwell, Shaw and Cloke will all have gained much more valuable experience. There is also a chance that Reid, Dawes and Brown may come on in before Sept. 2008.

Yes, but the bloke who is really beginning to impress me is Cox - good size, fair pace, skills seem pretty good and rarely looks flustered. Seems to be improving with each outing too.

I agree, and its all true but look at teams like Hawthorn, Carlton, Port ect. They're all the same, everyone is in a similiar position to a certain extent so we arent anything special. We just need to make sure there are 4-5 19-20year olds who decide to become superstars, THEN we will have a side ready to win Premierships.

Yeah there are other teams with exciting lists as well as ours. We aren't going to just walk to a premiership. It'll be a mix of quality footballers, attitude, coaching...

Pretty much agree. IMO we’d have lost if Bryan didn’t come in for Richards. Still love a top notch ruckman and to draft an 18 year old ruck prospect early. The only thing I’d add to what you said is that we need more pace and class to squeeze out the poor kicks.

Scott Meyer turns 21 this year. He is an exciting prospect. Malthouse would have expressed his interests post-game as he was at Casey Fields last week.
